Getting Fatter, What am I Doing Wrong?

ok im reading a little more about that simple powerbuilding routine. i think thats good because its clearing up some points and more importantly its getting me more “siked” for it if that makes sense which i think is important so i’m not just half-assing it and thinking it wont work.
apparently the warm up sets are like ramping sets and then i have 2-3 work sets with the last one being 1 rep short of failure. it seems like that thread goes back and forth on the opinion but it looks like that means i can just barely get the last completed rep. probably not a big thing to worry about anyway

1.Scott (or someone else who knows) if you dont mind i’ll ask here since it’ll take too long there. lets say im doing squats (doing them today) for 2x5. an example if working with 185 would be warm up as 45x5, 95x5, 135x5, then 2x185x5 correct? i know warm ups are not exactly defined for everyone but thats the general idea right, ramping them up?

  1. do i increase warm up weight in future workouts? i did on bill starrs 5x5 but dont know if im supposed to here

                                        Thanks
I know it may be hard to grasp this but you need to stop asking questions like this. You need to learn to think this kind of stuff through for yourself. Through experience and time and consistency you will learn how much volume you can handle and what is ideal for you.

Follow the program EXACTLY as it is written for now. Don’t change anything. In several months, gauge your progress, and if you feel like you need it, add some volume to the squats. Then gauge your progress again.

This whole iron game is an experiment. There are few hard rules here (other than eat BIG, lift BIG), so stop asking questions as if there is a perfect way of warming up or a perfect amount of volume. These are highly individual.

Like your question on warming up. When you go to the gym, warm up with weights that YOU feel are going to prepare you best for your work sets. I can’t believe this stuff is getting so complicated. FORGET about this being some intricate equation with precise variables. This is just WEIGHTLIFTING. You are just lifting iron to work your muscles. It is simple.

As has been said before, just TRAIN. Do this consistently and just DO IT. It will ultimately help you far more than asking someone else for what you should do.

David your warmups sound fine. Get off the boards!

I’m calling you out every time I see you on here asking another question till I see some proof you are progressing. Learn by doing, you’ll figure way more out under the bar than in the computer chair.

The bigger the weight more warmup you need.
135LBS ???
Erm thats like what 60kgs ?
My girfriend does 87.5 for 6

You REALLY need to start working out more !

Also 2 sets of 5 ???
That seems a waste of time … 2 sets of 5 wont really do much in the way of growth …

What program are you doing… and if you say muscle and fitness…

But to answer if its 135:

Whatever amount of reps you do for your main do for your warmup:

So say 15 of 70lbs
1
5 of 100lbs
1*5 of 120lbs

And off you go, but seriously 2 sets of 5 ???
did you finish reading the post? im not working with 135 im working with 185 and its not like thats my max. look at the routine on google. type in “ironaddict simple powerbuilding routine” and its the 2nd one down i think. the 2x5 is just the first exercise followed after ramping sets.
Corkonian wrote:
Also how long did you stay on the 5*5 ???
A week ?
You SURELY would have gained more strength off that for your squats than 135lbs ???

And yes as i answered the higher the weight, more warmups;

Like say mine for 190kg back squat used to be:

Is: 100kg for 6
140kg for 6
150kg for 3
170kg for 6

And off i go. Some use more, some use less
that was bill starrs 5x5 i did for 10 weeks and like i said my squat is much higher than 135…read the whole post

lol alright just making sure its good.

btw just did the workout, it felt good and the weights i chose were exactly where i think they should have been. last set of each exercise was just before failure so next workout i’ll add 2.5lb. to most lifts

I think americans should convert to kgs
Your lifts sound HUGE in lbs till i convert them to kgs !

How about 5 lbs(a side) to the bigger lifts, 2.5(a side) to the assistance. Don’t be afraid to be a little more aggressive with your jumps.

oh, i was just going off what IA said (1-3lb. on bigger lifts, 1lb. or a rep on assistance lifts).

the thing is when i start light 5lb. increases seem easy but today for example my 5th rep of squat on the 2nd set was 1 rep from failure (thats how all of my lifts went since he said it should be 1 rep short of failure). i cant see me getting the 2x5 with 190 next time. i guess if i only got 2x5,3-4x190 that would be ok and then i’d try to get the 2x5x190 next time?

edit: just noticed you said 5lb. each side? 195 i’d probably get 3 reps maybe. i assume you mean assistance exercises being all but that first one?

Progress how you can, just make it happen long term.

Atta boy, tell em Scott. He may get his head screwed on straight after all. Would be an inspiration to many and I could not be more serious.
