Hello T-Nation! Reading up on some different training programs brought me here, and now I’m hooked.
I’m planning to get back to regular training in my home gym and hoping that logging my sessions here will help me to stay consistent.
My history with training is as follows: high school sports (not really any lifting), lots of intramural sports in college (still no lifting, but got more interested in training), started Crossfit in 2013 and did that for about 10 years. At the tail end of that, I started BJJ and was doing a Crossfit class and two BJJ/MMA training sessions most week days while working 50-60 hrs per week. Predictably, I crashed and burned. Hard. I quit all of that (I still hope I can get back to BJJ some day…) and switched to an entirely different career path. Since then, I’ve experimented in my home gym with various training programs (Starting Strength, 5/3/1, 8 Weeks Out, Lean and Strong, etc.), with mixed results due mostly to lack of adherence and consistency.
There have been a couple of challenges in my new situation that I haven’t successfully addressed–yet. First, I’ve struggled to find a good balance of strength, conditioning, mobility, and variation that works for me. I don’t really want to go back to the randomness of traditional Crossfit, but I do miss the community, the variety, and not having to come up with a training program myself. Second, my new job is quite physically demanding with long days and I am totally exhausted after work, often with aches and stiffness. It has been very easy to come up with seemingly valid reasons to skip training. This has led to very few training days over the last 6 months since I started my job. Add that to other health habits that I’ve let slide over the last couple of years and I’m not in a great place (aka overweight, out of shape, and tired most of the time).
I know that getting stronger and in better physical condition is what I need to do to be better for myself, for others, for work, etc. So that’s the journey that I’m embarking upon now. I just got “Easy Strength” by Dan John and Pavel, because the idea of making training as easy as possible is very appealing right now as I’m trying to figure out how to adjust to my new situation and schedule.
Anyway, that’s enough from me. Hopefully it’ll be all about completed training sessions from here on. Looking forward to getting after it again!
