Gettin' Big Powders

For a different take on this the new IED of choice among terrorists is made with TANG, hydrogen peroxide and a disposable camera.

I hear Mentos and Diet Coke is the new thing.

In all seriousness, this Tang, H2O2 and cam scam is from 2006. That was the story that pushed a ban on liquids. The details of the investigation just came out this year though, which could explain why you’re confused about the novelty of this setup. I don’t buy the premise that you could build anything that could do serious damage to a regular aircraft with those things. And even if I did, how hard is it to get hydrogen peroxide in bottles of lens solutions. Not once has anyone checked to see if it was soap, piss or nitroglycerin.

Remember, cutters were behind 9/11.

I, for one, refuse to be terrorized by hair bleach and soft drinks. But feel free to buy all the hype. In fact, better stay home just to be safe. A “terrorist” might be busy with his lighter and butane can while you do your shopping.
OK

Was it that they were hassling you or was it a routine check where they just happened to find your supplements? I’ve had that happen where it’s just a routine check and they find something interesting and ask you about it.

In the past, I’ve traveled with all kinds of supplements and never been given a hard time about them. That being said, I check all of them and never bring anything with the word ‘anabolic’ on it. Those are steroids you know.

In all seriousness, keep things in their original containers and put them in checked luggage and I don’t foresee a problem.

Unless one of the baggage handlers takes a fancy to your supps and steals them. It happened to Push not too long ago, if I remember correctly.
That sort of thing makes me hesitant to even bring supps on an airline trip, much less check them – I’d rather just leave them at home so I don’t have to worry about losing them.

I’m glad I don’t need to travel on a regular basis, otherwise it would be a pain in the ass.

Seriously?

I typically have far more valuable things than supplements in my baggage. I think my protein powder is the last thing I’d be worried about a baggage handler stealing.

Maybe that’s a plus-side of me carrying them in unmarked Ziplocs, rather than in identifiable containers. Who’s going to steal some unknown powder?

What the hell? Who steals supps?

Any of my textbooks cost more than the most expensive supp staple around. And I use hydrolyzed whey!

Unfortunately, it’s true. I’ve heard of this before also.

My way around it is, I save all of my old, empty containers and when I fly, I simply measure out how much I’ll need on my stay. That way, if it disappears or is taken, I didn’t lose all of it.

I have a friend that works for a major airline and most of the things that they confiscate are divided up among the employees and taken home. Sad but true.

If baggage handles are so desperate that they need to divy up my 4-days worth of protein powder between them, have at it.

Better that than my clothes and shoes.

However, with this new band of supplement-robbing baggage handlers on the loose, I’ll be sure to keep more expensive pill-based supplements in my carry-on.

Maybe just for kicks, I’ll carry a container of protein powder mixed with powdered bleach in my checked baggage, and let them steal that and give it a whirl.

Make that two of us that use this strategy. Works like a charm. I’ve never been stopped for powders and supps. No, I usually get stopped more for being in uniform (US ARMY). It’s pretty dumb, but it’s happened on my 2 most recent flights.

Thanks. I’ll try divvying things up into ziploc bags, I suppose. But if I end up being pulled aside and am given the full-cavity search I’m blaming you.

This is a subject that’s been on my mind lately, as I have to fly this coming weekend and I’m currently on a supplement regime that includes a whole lot of powders and pills. Traveling with pills is no problem, but powders . . . ?

Anyone got any good suggestions for how to pack them? And would you suggest putting them in your checked baggage or carrying them on?

Thanks.

See my above post.

I’ve carried them both in checked and carry-on, sometimes in Ziplocs, rarely in tubs, and have never once gotten stopped for them. I wouldn’t worry about it. They’re only concerned with liquids these days.
Why do I have a feeling it’s not just supplements that you’ve been traveling with and with which you’ve been concerned that the screeners might find? Weren’t you on CNN recently where they found, and held up for all to see, your . . . Oh, nevermind. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Sometimes I wonder why I tell you things, Damici. You are such a trouble maker!
