George Floyd Riots

Off topic, but I did not mind C at all, it is the ++ (object orientated) part that really did me in. It went from being straight forward to being this abstract thing I really had a hard time wrapping my head around.

C is literally short hand for assembly language.

The Object oriented paridigm is a struggle for many people.

Just wait till Quantum programming starts trying to kick off…

I have experienced it. I see it at ā€œworkā€ in our schools. If you read a job ad from a school looking for a teacher, inevitably one of the requirements will be a commitment to social justice. Race theories are being taught as fact and you can’t disagree. When I was told white privilege exists, I disagreed. That was not an option.

Well, you were wrong. It does exist in this country, thats not really up for debate… kind of like the answer to a math problem.

If you interviewed and denied the holocause existing youd also be told thats not an option lol.

What is up for debate is how much white folks benefit from that privilege, and if it is feasible to judge how much white privilege matters in comparison to all the other privileges people enjoy which they themselves did not earn (family, money, education, etc).

Ah, this thread suddenly feels just like my early twenties.

Engineers like myself are everywhere, posters are name dropping programming celebs and there are remarkably few women around.

Yes, it is up for debate. Can you apply the scientific method to prove it exists?

Not the same thing. The Holocaust was an event; white privilege is a state of mind.

No. The concept of what a white person is, is up for debate. I reject the concept of who is or isn’t white since it has always been arbitrary.

Numerous studies showing an implicit bias towards white-looking folks in arenas ranging from workplace, to courtrooms, schools. So actually, yes you can apply the scientific method, and there are numerus studies and experiements out there that did show in a repeatable fashion that white-looking folks were favored.

If a teacher rejects a commonly held theory that is taught in the curriculum, i can totally see why they would have a problem with that teacher.

My thoughts on white privilege are that white / Asian people are treated differently than black people. However, I think privilege is the wrong word to use. Is someone privileged because they did not get harassed by the cops or didn’t get offered a lower than fair wage for their work? I say no. That is how people should be treated. Being treated in the way one should is just that, but it isn’t privileged.

I agree that we need to do our best to eliminate the differences in how people are treated. I just think privilege is the wrong word, that all.

Is it all the time, by everyone? Are there blacks who have bias towards other blacks? Racism exists. Prejudice and bigotry exist. However, not everyone feels that way. White privilege says that every white person has it and every white person is biased.

Yet, when I took one of those bias tests to measure how bigoted you are, I was shown to have no bias.

And white looking is saying that whiteness is arbitrary. If you are white but don’t look white, do you still have white privilege?

Fuck yeah whiteness is subjective, just like all appearance.

White privilege doesnt mean a white person has an advantage in every instance everytime. It simply means that in general, a white person has an advantage in our society over a black person, other things being equal. No real mention of how big that advantage is, or how often it appears.

Thats great you dont seem to have any implicit biases. Thats just one data point though.

Hutus towards Tutsis in Rwanda, Hausa vs. Igbo in Nigeria…

Hell, in Ethiopia Amhara do not consider themselves black and discriminate against Oromo for being ā€œblackā€ (-ish?).

Saw her at the first Linux World Expo San Jose in 1999.

So white privilege is extended and not inherent. Thus, no one has it.

Which they rarely are. It also requires that in those situations, the person who is in a position to choose, is someone who will extend that privilege.

Isn’t this a form of stereotyping? In science, you get the same result every time.

I must be doing something wrong.

If you want to call something a truth or fact or law.

Agree in that context.

I’m sure some of them could be identified.

If the KKK burns crosses in a public demonstration it’s OK because everyone there is sympathetic to the cause.

None that made the news. If you know of some then post a link.

How is covering a mural of a black Marxist organization a hate crime? What if they just hate Marxists? I sure do.
