George Floyd Riots

Bingo.

ā€œWe must address the root and byproduct of systemic racism in our country. The Black Lives Matter movement is an important civil rights cause that deserves all of our attention,ā€ District Attorney Diana Becton said.

The mural completed last weekend was a peaceful and powerful way to communicate the importance of Black lives in Contra Costa County and the country," Becton said. "We must continue to elevate discussions and actually listen to one another in an effort to heal our community and country.ā€

The two were charged with violation of civil rights, vandalism under $400, and possession of tools to commit vandalism or graffiti, according to the district attorney’s office.

Are any attorneys on this thread?

So, If I get a permit to paint a mural saying ā€œAll Lives Matterā€ or ā€œBlue lives Matterā€ or ā€œAll Military Lives Matterā€ would that be hate crime now? or freedom of speech? Or does freedom of speech even exist now? I now it does if you say the correct phases, but, what if I said something different in a respectful way? Don’t think so anymore.

Yep, if it was because the statues were of white guys - hate crime. If it was because the statues were of white guys with (perceived) racist pasts - no hate crime. Tough to prove. But prosecutors will always charge the maximum that evidence can possibly support and let the jury reduce the charges.

If I view BLM as a political organization, which it is, and not just a slogan, and I vandalize a mural, is that a political message or a racist one? It would still be a crime but would it be a hate crime?

What if I view BLM as a slogan, as racist? Defacing a racist slogan can’t be racist, can it? I would ask, whose 1st amendment rights are really at risk?

If disagreeing with BLM as a slogan or political movement can be used as evidence for a hate crime, we are all screwed.

I would imagine that an All Lives Matter mural would not be permitted on public property for the same reason that an anti-gay mural would not be permitted. Depends on the area and the locals though.

This isnt a new thing. Local jurisdictions have had the power for centuries to decide what they publicly support, or dont publicly support.

Especially when the definitions have changed. If you aren’t actively fighting racism, you are a racist.

The idea that a positive, inclusive message can be seen as a negative one is some Orwellian level reasoning.

How many people actually believe that though? Most folks who have said a version of ā€œsilence is complicityā€ have gone on to temper their stance. And honestly, silence is complicity to an extent. But fundamentalist (from all walks) suck, and most people instinctively know this.

Every sociology professor and major in the nation.

All Lives Matter is a direct rebuttal to the ā€œBlack Lives Matter tooā€. Well meaning people screw that up less and less these days.

Words in context have meaning outside of just their literal meaning in a vacumn. Its pretty easy to tell.

Abolish Liberal Arts!

STEM Only!!!

Id vote for that platform.

From what I have seen it is virtue signaling. They are indicating that they are being active in protesting, and better than those who are not.

If you are someone who is advocating for people being treated equally in person and on platforms like T-nation, I feel you are making a more positive impact than the people shutting down highways in protest, which I think makes the people stuck waiting want to go against their cause just to spite them.

As an engineer, I want as many liberal arts majors and as few STEM majors as possible. Supply and demand would indicate more STEM majors is bad for me if I am concerned for the price of my labor.

But, we have established that BLM does have several possible meanings. There are black people who say All Lives Matter, are they racist? And being a rebuttal does not make it a denial or negation, let alone racist.

Too late. STEM is considered racist as science is a method to express white supremacy. Yes, they believe that.

Engineer here too. I want more STEM folks so that people will pay a premium for actual good quality engineering work haha!

But really, If you have an interest in or personality more suited toward a career in liberal arts stuff youd still benefit more from 3 years of STEM and 1 year of liberal arts education.

That’s my entirely unbiased opinion haha.

Most people drop out of STEM. My school had a 18% graduation rate for entering freshmen in my program. My point is promoting it only does so much. When most start their first year, and have calc, physics, c++ and one lib ed class they quickly decide something else is better for them.

If it is a rebuttal then it is exclusionary - your message is wrong, ours is right. The BLM message that is being rebutted is ā€œBlack Lives Matter tooā€, which is not exclusionary, it is inclusive… and a message that all non-racists agree with even if you disagree with the BLM organization.

All Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, etc (which started out as a more general, nuetral agreement with BLM, or a piggy back onto it) have become a dog whistle for racist folks who have co-opted them, unfortunately, to minimize the ongoing struggle for racial equality.

Black Lives Matter is nearing a tipping point (i think) where it is no longer ā€œBlack Lives Matter tooā€ to the general public and is becoming a superPAC with goals that are concerning to most folks. Its becoming more organization than message, and when that happens they will lose mass support as well i think.

You’re reading too much clickbait. this THEY you seem so terrified of is one helluva boogeyman.

Curse you Bjarne Stroustup for creating that language… lol

I’ve had lunch with him in 1998 in NJ.
