It’s why I’ve been saying these are just very dumb people. They don’t know how anything works. They don’t know history or economics. They never ask, what came first: crime or police? It would end up looking like Beirut or some kind of Lord of The Flies experiment.
If there were no cops, businesses would leave. Insurance for everyone would go up (auto, home, business). Those residents with the means to leave, would leave. Firemen and EMTs would probably leave as well since they couldn’t be sure they would be able to do their jobs safely.
It won’t happen because they wouldn’t have any money to pay for anything.

No major metropolitan City in the U.S. will dismantle it’s Police Force.
Even when an extremely small town does it (most often for economic reasons); enforcing is taken over by other Departments (often County Sheriffs Departments, etc).

Look at what has already happened. Many Targets and Walmarts are deciding to close in the high risk areas permanently. So now everything just got worse for everyone there, and that will measurably increase the unemployment and cost of living, along with all the good stuff that follows along with increased unemployment and cost of living.
Stellar job, all round.

It’s all about money. It’s not like taxes will go down because there are no cops to pay. That money will get transferred somewhere else and these politicians and community organizers will be pocketing their “fair” share. Imagine all of the money that goes to police going to people who can spend it without any oversight. Which is another reason why it won’t happen.
Oh 100%. I’m merely noting the damage the disorder has already caused. No one in their right mind would invest in an area without a police force whose order is contingent on the good nature of Antifa.

The problem in this country is that a lack of intelligence, character, integrity and courage are not barriers to success. People talk about white privilege; I think we have stupidity privilege. How else can you explain lawyers getting arrested for throwing Molotov Cocktails at police cars? At the very least, they will be disbarred. Supposedly educated people talking about defunding the police? Supposedly educated people talking about fighting fascism?

Like Johnny Rotten writing “I hate” on his Pink Floyd shirt. But then I thought as much as I like sarcasm, I didn’t want to spend any money in that murderer’s name.

Don’t have much time so just spitballing off the top of my head.
I’d start with a comprehensive examination of why we have more prisoners than everyone else. What do other countries with less prisoners than us do and what can we emulate? What laws make no sense? What supports can we provide people when they are released which will lower the chance of them coming back in? Poverty, mental illness, substance abuse. What are we doing to fight that? What are we doing why these people are in jail? What are we doing upon release?
I’d probably have more later but I have to get. I don’t think I have all the answers by any means but I do know our criminal justice system is profitable for many people. And we have long been the lockup kings of the world.

I think for the second and third of those, prison should not be used as anything like a first choice option. Prison makes the mentally ill worse, and there are plenty of drugs in the prison system.
I remember reading about this and thinking it was a step in the right direction.
You could fill an entire library with this question. I’m pretty sure that no one has even close to a full grasp of all the laws on the books.
