It is decidedly odd that no one wants all police to be held responsible for the actions of bad apples, but it’s quite OK for all black people to bear the burden of dysfunctional police…because of the actions of bad apples.
A handful of bad police vs thousands of rioters and looters…hmmmm.
All black people don’t need to feel the burden, especially if they aren’t involved in the bad behaviour. Many are actively speaking out against the bad behaviour, rather than trying to deflect or justify the looting.
Its kicked off in Germany too. But I suppose that’s okay because the white people there are all evil descendants of Nazis so they must deserve it?
I bet Angela Merkel is pleased with her compassion and humanity welcoming all those refugees from Africa and the Middle East. What a way to repay a society that tried to help them.
How did that guy make it 75 years without diving head first into a wood chipper or jumping in front of a truck and yelling “Boo!”.
They’re obviously in full riot and street clearing mode. All 100 or so, in riot gear with sticks.
So, wrong time to what ever.
Just for posterity, future readers of interwebz, whomever:
If you ever see something like a skirmish line of cops in riot gear moving toward you- Run!
But not toward them. Go the OTHER WAY.
Then is not the time to close distance on them while gesturing and grabbing toward their belts. Even if it’s a really nice belt. Maybe a really svelt waistline.
Not the time.
Bad that it happened, but what the fuck, man?
Here’s something crazy. I went through 14 weeks of academy training and an additional 12 weeks of FTO before I was put out on my own. In my state it takes nearly a year of schooling to get a license to cut hair. Tell me that ain’t f*$ked up.
We had two protests this week and a third that was shut down because they didn’t have a permit. Damaged some vehicles but no big looting mostly because there were large groups of armed citizens on every street corner downtown to prevent any tomfoolery.
Watched a video going around the local social media and it seemed their main grievance was that cops are bitches and n*&&^%s. One of the eloquent “gentleman” on the video is currently on probation so I hope his PO sees it.
This is a crucial point people overlook. Riot police are a blunt instrument.
As you wouldn’t have a discussion with a dentist’s drill or a doctor’s scalpel, so you shouldn’t discuss anything with the riot police.
Blame the people who decided to use that blunt instrument in a wildly inappropriate situation.
These guys were not selected for their job based on their ability to consider the ramifications of asymmetrical violence in a wider sociological context, but because they can disperse a group of people from X without killing anyone.
And there is no mistaking what they’re there for/doing.
You do have a point, but at the same time he didn’t approach them in any sort of aggressive manner and there was no reason for them to push him, especially considering that he was an old man. He posed no threat to them and even if he was uncooperative and wouldn’t move out of the way they could have dealt with him differently.
Now there are a bunch of people talking about defunding the police, and in Buffalo (where this incident occurred) a lot of cops are supporting the two who injured the old man. Defunding the police is not really a good idea for a number of reasons, but this kind of shit is going to make more people support that:
“Hundreds of law enforcement officers gathered outside two Buffalo courthouses on Saturday in support of two police officers expected to be arraigned on criminal charges for shoving an elderly protestor to the ground at a march against racism.”
Maybe they need to change the training, teach them right from wrong and that kind of thing. What ever happened to “serve and protect”? Is the public now their enemy? Just imagine that was a black man, the riots would be worse than ever.
A lot of these cops need to get their act together.
I can confirm, from my time in FAST training with riot formations and nonlethal rounds, that you do not want to fuck with a riot squad.
That being said, riot formations need lots of training, so I’m laughing at making excuses for shoving a 75 year old man. I’m not expecting police to be infallible, but decision making in the moment is key and not to be thrown to the wayside. The guy was not imposing looking, regardless of his height or where he was moving his arms. That goes back to improper training. People are also not aware that nonlethal rounds are absolutely capable of being lethal, and most projectiles have minimum safe distances, inside of which you can absolutely kill somebody. The people sending out the riot squads are responsible, but the riot squads themselves are responsible for on-the-ground decision making.
Let’s not also forget what year it is and how everything is on camera. Human terrain is as important as physical terrain these days.
Eh, I disagree. He walkid directly to them and started gesturing in some manner. Watch the video in slow-mo and keep an eye on his right hand. No idea what he’s saying, but his body language tell me he’s trying to hold court.
Just my impression.
Once again, disagree.
They weren’t there to bake cakes, and getting right up on them and distracting/occupying the two of them was a big mistake. They’re clearing the area. He’s in the area.
Let us not forget that this was in Buffalo. They might have mistaken him for a folding table.
I am keeping an eye on his right hand. In training, the biggest level of threat assessment in a quick situation comes from what the person is holding in their hands. He is gesturing with a phone. This is not a threat. He could have been moved to the side. There was no reason to shove him. Clearing the area does not mean aggressively dealing with everybody, and showing aggression to the wrong person when they’re not a threat can cause others who would normally do nothing to react angrily and become new threats.
To be clear - they should have taken him and moved him to the side, and detained him if necessary.
They should not have shoved him. You let them dictate where your level of force needs to be. Gesturing with a phone as a 75 year old man with wrinkled skin and gray hair does not merit a shove to the chest.
Dude… The whole “us vs them” bullshit is exactly that, bullshit. Good God the amount of lies, misinformation and propaganda about is alarming.
Our CDT hurt ZERO protesters. Zero. Zerooooooo. Despite bricks, rocks, fireworks, gunfire, incendiary devices, gas, etc… Hurled at them.
This is a joke… Right ? It’s quite the opposite in my experience.
This is what I mean - people capture stuff on camera and assume all cops are acting this way, but the truth is the vast majority of police are showing an unreal amount of restraint. And as you said, that’s with stuff being thrown at them. If people can show restraint in the face of that level of aggression, I’m going to call out stuff when I see it. That was poor decision making. Fortunately, despite several videos floating around, a few incidents when dealing with the thousands and thousands of people nationwide are to be expected and the amount of incidents, given the scale of this situation, are at a reasonable level, IMO.
If you want people to stop using social media views as a sample size for all police, you’ll have to remember that you’re dealing with inner city St Louis as your population sample.
40 million black people in the US. 20+ million aren’t violently rioting. This is assuming what you meant by “this is a joke” was in reference to his comment about the majority of blacks not being violent. I have many black friends in several states. Not a single one is rioting - that’s my anecdotal experience.
I know there are in total number a lot of blacks rioting - but I would stop well short of talking about black people as one group. Just as white people are policing and rioting simultaneously.
Yeah, I agree. I just think that the guy badly misread/understood the situation, and the cops misread/understood the guy.
What it comes down to for me is that I feel bad for the guy, but I sure as shit would not have done that.
Exactly. But people still will believe what they want to despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary… American police are rabidly hunting down “unarmed” black men with no repercussions. It’s like the fucking Twilight Zone.
But he didn’t touch them and there was no reason for them to feel physically threatened by him.
Well, considering that the two cops are facing charges, their own police department disagrees.
You and a few of the other recent posts go to prove exactly what I was saying, that when cops kill or injure a white person for no good reason there are always a bunch of white people running to their defence. I don’t get it. Do you think that something like this could never happen to you? If the cops injured you would you be OK with it and make excuses for them?
