George Floyd Riots

@chillain

This is the second time you’ve responded to me and I have no idea what you’re going on about. I am 100% in favor of putting police officers and politicians in jail when they commit crimes.

Not really. My example is how a person that was in a position of power was charged and convicted and the very same people that she stole from are now voting for her, again. They know she is a criminal and they are still voting for her more than the other non-criminal candidates.

I don’t think you understood my point.

I told you to switch arms from time to time or you would have complications. Look the right is my favorite as well but you have to have balance.

That’s ok at least you haven’t gone blind from it yet.

Sat on it too long attempting a stranger. Damn buffering!

Wait, are u being serious?

In this George Floyd thread, you post “What about blacks being murdered, in general?” and “What about corrupt politicians enjoying (ongoing) voter support?”… and I’m the one raising irrelevant pushback??

Yeah, no.

It’s an absolute catastrophe. Many of them might never reopen. What a waste. I’m 100% in favor of peaceful assembly by people of conscience, and 100% for making the arsonists and violent rioters prosecuted and locked up for years on end.

Sadly probably none. As you are a person who is deeply involved with our men and women in both military and civilian uniforms, I would be interested in your thoughts on anything that could be useful reforms going forward (forgetting political feasibility or party).

Should you have the time or desire of course.

I think this is the first post of yours I partially agree with. As I consider “virtue signalling” to be a conscious act rather than inadvertent I can’t label it that, however I do believe things like “raising awareness” via Facebook or whatever essentially accomplish the same thing: empathy and no helpful progress toward solutions.

However, I think we will probably disagree on the likelihood that empathy actively makes the problem worse. I would consider that highly unlikely and no reason to avoid relating to another person.

I agree here, as long as the virtue signaling doesn’t cross over into judgement, which it seems to do much too often. Failure to virtue signal causes harm, you see…

“Why didn’t you kneel here tonight?”

This is a question my local protesters are asking the cops right now. Watching live on a feed.

“They’re kids are going to grow up and see you doing this”

The cops are just standing there being professional.

“Can you do anything besides stand there? Something you can show us?”

This is Maine, everything I’m watching as I post is totally chill and nonviolent, but the line of questioning is ridiculous AND the demands right now are…

Literally…

Asking the cops to virtue signal somehow. Not make this change or that, but literally asking the cops to kneel.

“You’re oppressing us!”

Applause

EDIT: Lots of insults and one-liners over the last few minutes. Cops just standing there being pros. Normal gear plus COVID mask. Here’s a good one.

“We pay you! Get on your knees.”

LOUD APPLAUSE

Yeah, that’s all complete bullshit

I don’t think that subjugation and humiliation is going to work.

Ironically, it’s usually met with violence at some point.

A lot of people think, show empathy, and I’ve done my bit here, you’re on your own now.
Its a good way of making someone think, that people are actually listening to you that you really just want to get rid of and get on to something else. Favourite tactic of the bureaucracy.

However sometimes there is nothing you can really do to concretely help, but lend a person some sympathy and empathy. Its a fine line and each person has to assess it themselves on a case by case basis.

Philosophically, I’d question whether that’s actual empathy or just patronizing for selfish means. My opinion is on the latter but I follow what you mean.

This part I agree with.

I actually think some people think they are being empathetic when deep down though not consciously are not really prepared to make a real sacrifice at their own expense to help. Some people are genuine and have their hearts in the right place and will give you the shirt off their back to help.
Some people have no good intention at all, despite overtly displaying sympathy.

  1. Higher recruitment standards. Unfortunately we’re hurting for bodies so standards are lowered to an embarrassing level.

  2. Much higher pay. Let’s face it… Most departments have lousy pay and benefits for such a vital job. But applicant quality should also reflect that pay. The right people won’t apply given the shit pay.

  3. Educate the public. Nobody seems to understand basic laws regarding Terry stops, use of force, deadly force scenarios, etc… Also, the “paid vacation” shit is annoying as fuck considering its pending an investigation that could lead to termination or exoneration.

  4. A public / police liaison that’s versed in law, policing and also trusted by the public. Too often we have extremes representing both sides of the argument.

  5. Drop the “unarmed” bullshit. Unarmed people kill more people than all rifle types COMBINED each year. Unarmed doesn’t mean deadly force can’t be used. The context of the use of deadly force is paramount.

  6. We need to admit and accept we can do better in our policing. So does the public. Like any relationship, compromise, communication and the willingness to improve is important and will lead to healthy growth.

  7. A bipartisan call on our cocksucker media to report the fucking facts and not their fucking opinions. Fuck celebrities and their void of reality opinions, too.

  8. Zero tolerance for violent protests.

  9. A zero tolerance approach regarding incarcerating violent criminals. Liberals coddle these assholes that are terrorizing vastly more minorities than whites. It’s disgusting and insulting to the great black Americans we have that live in these areas.

  10. Encourage police scenario training days. Come out and see things from our p.o.v. When done properly as to not rub their noses in their inevitable failures it’s a really great thing. Most come away with a different opinion of us. Usually an improved one.

I’ll think of more

Years ago I tutored children in the ghetto, a real bad ghetto (worse than the one I was living in which I thought was impossible) that if it had a larger population would have possibly ranked as the most dangerous city in America. I didn’t see any of these white saviors lining up to help, and to be honest, there weren’t many black tutors either. They couldn’t find enough tutors but if you see these protests there are thousands of white people who claim to care and to have had enough. Where were they the whole time I was finding out regularly someone I knew had been murdered? They hadn’t had enough then? They were OK while I, and other residents, had to be ever vigilant against thieving crackheads who would steal anything and everything they could.

I worked in an inner city school after moving to a suburb in another state and they were always looking for tutors, and there were several colleges a few minutes away, but they could never find many. No one donated school supplies. It might not sound like much but if a few people simply brought in notebooks and pencils it would save teachers from having to pay for supplies out of their own pockets. How much do they spend on a coffee? It’s not glamorous and might not get you virtue points on social media but it’s needed.

If these young people added up how much time they spend on social media creating stupid videos I’m sure they could find a little time to volunteer in these communities. A lot of the volunteers I do see are older. They have jobs and families and still find time to help.

Are things going to change? I have my doubts because if these people were serious about change and helping these communities, they would already have been doing it. The people who are serious are already there.

I logged out for the past while due to too much douchebaggery in this thread, but saw this post.

There is a helluva lot of middle ground in that post which both “sides” can agree upon and implement to improve OUR society. I appreciate your input. Hopefully some of those bullet points can become SOP across the nation.

It is very apparent you care about the community you serve, and the individuals in it.

Bravo, man. Guys like us walk the walk. But there’s never a shortage of do-nothing cretins to show us how “progressive” they are through memes and social media drivel. Changing a FB profile picture is as far as most of these idiots’ help extends.

Lots of great ideas. I really like the liaison idea, I had not thought of that. Would DEFINITELY need to be more than a “talking head”. And I think scenario training days would be really good as well, there is a ton of stuff nobody ever thinks about when doing the Monday morning qb thing. I think it would go a long way towards helping out #3

Great post. Totally agree.

I really really hate this (I say as I post on an internet forum…). It’s like there’s this giant disconnect between what they learned in books and what actually has to happen in REAL LIFE. Trying to remain politics neutral since I think a lot of great servants come from both sides of the aisle.

You have to do something concrete. Anything. Shit, just donate some notebooks as zecarlo pointed out. I have a good friend who I am jealous of because he’s one of the “fix anything” guys. He roofs for a living 6 days a week, which is stupid hard physically anyways considering hours and weather, and almost every weekend he is somewhere near his neighborhood (theres a trailer park nearby) helping someone fix their own roof, or patch a hole, or whatever, for free. He’s a rock star.

I am jealous because I am exactly useless in such a scenario and would likely be more harm than good . I can give supplies and stuff, but that’s about all lol.

Yeah there might be fake funds. This is the legit one below started by a conservative commentator.
As far as i understand the wife doesnt want the money for herself and among other things $100,000 will got to Crimestoppers to apprehend the shooters of those 4 St Louis officers

For anyone interested…
