George Floyd Riots

Are you saying that because someone somewhere has grabbed a gun out of his glovebox with bad intentions before, that a cops should be able to shoot anyone dead as soon as he sees them reach for the glovebox? That would be absurd.

Oh wow
 looks like this is him

I disagree. I think they are too quick to resort to shooting. But, i think they are too quick with everyone, not just black folks.

Believing the driver was armed, police conducted a high risk traffic stop, the complaint reads, and ordered Blake to put his hands out the window of the vehicle. Instead, Blake exited the SUV and started walking toward officers and ignored commands to get down on the ground. Officers forced Blake to the ground and ordered him to put his hands behind his back. When Blake refused to comply, K9 Dozer was deployed to force the defendant into compliance.

A history of defiance, and being a shithead. That doesn’t mean he should have been shot but it doesn’t help keep you from getting shot. A non criminal would not put his life in someone else’s hands but do what he could to stay alive. Life is hard. It’s even harder when you’re dumb.

If they tell you to not reach for it.

Getting shot by police for not following orders
Not for being a danger, but for possibly being a danger in the future. That’s a very scary thought, and for how abysmally low standards are for PD recruits that is far too much power and responsibility IMO.

If someone says they are going to kill you tomorrow, are they a danger or a future danger? Do you wait until tomorrow to deal with it?

This guy was a dirtbag criminal. I believe it’s been reported he had an open warrant (a good reason, for an idiot, to disobey the cops).

“I shot him before he had a chance to try and grab the gun”, is a bad shooting.

“I shot him because I didn’t want to find out what he was pulling out of his car” is a bad shooting.

Lethal force should not be used to keep an officer out of harm’s way, it should only be used to save an officer (or civilian) whose life is already directly threatened IMO.

Some basic stuff like was there a gun in the car? Was a knife in his hand at some point? Was he under arrest? Etc would be good to know.

If standards for police recruits are “abysmally low” it’s probably because they can’t fill positions. They can’t fill positions because the pay is low, morale is lower, the training sucks, and doing your job can get you killed on the one hand or your life ruined by the politicians you work for on the other.

And on top of that we are now talking about defunding them.

I think it mostly comes down to the low pay. But, YMMV.

Well defunding will fix that for sure!

Would, “I shot him after I saw him try and grab the gun, then grabbed the gun, then pointed the gun at me and then shot me,” be better?

It doesn’t work that way for you, so why does it have to be like that for cops? If Mike Tyson says he is going to punch you in the head and the only thing you can do to stop him is shoot him, what do you do?

Basic stuff like listening to the cops (as if your life depended upon it, cause it might). Isn’t the narrative that black people are scared of cops? In pretty much every shooting, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Makes zero difference to the situation. Even if they were there to arrest him on that warrant it wouldn’t make a difference.

It was a fucked up situation before they shot him anyway, and it could have potentially gotten worse if they didn’t. What happened before the scene in the video is relevant too because if he had already been in a physical altercation with the cops or had been tased then it would at least partially justify them shooting him like that.

Also keep in mind that a car can be used as a weapon, and on top of that it would become a worse situation if you have a possibly armed suspect locked in a car with three kids.

Buy fewer tanks.

If the cops have their guns pointed at you and tell you “hands up” or “get on the ground” or whatever and you reach in the glovebox or your pocket or elsewhere then most likely you are going to get shot right then and there. They can’t wait and see what you pull out in a situation like that.

If they had waited to see what he grabs and he started shooting in every direction and hit several bystanders then you would you feel about the situation?

On the Brooks shooting we disagree a bit but we’ve been over that. I fully agree with you about criminals and stupid decisions though. The 3 cases mentioned are 3 different circumstances and I’d like to look at them each individually instead of as a pattern as so many people seem to be doing.

Stop right there and it’s justified in my mind. See the big difference between that and "I shot him before he had a chance to try and grab the gun”?

Because I am not a cop. I am a private citizen minding my own business.

A cop is supposed to put themselves in harms way and be a hero, the same way a firefighter is supposed to try and put out fires at great peril to themselves when they could just as easily say, no i might get burned, better to just let this one burn itself out and be sure we all go home safe, its the homeowners fault for leaving the oven on. the cop version of that is “i shot him because he might have been reaching for something dangerous and i didnt want to find out what it was”.

Firefighters exit buildings (or don’t enter in the first place) when the risk is too high.

Right. When an FD decides its too dangerous to enter its because the risk of serious injury is almost certain. A cop shooting a suspect because “he could have been grabbing something dangerous and i didnt want to find out what it was” (or similar) is akin to a FD staying so far away from the fire they need to wear their jackets for warmth.
