They could play my ocarina of time.
I’m kind of looking around for a surround sound system/amp for my console and tv - what are you guys using? I’m not bothered about budgets right now, just what can be recommended.
Do you run your sound directly from the console via optical, or from the TV?

Surround sound system, the same make as my tv. Try Circuit City before they go out of business…if anything is left.

I mean model numbers, brands, etc - I don’t know what make of TV you have.
Just doing a little window shopping for now, since I’ll probably be moving early next year.
I’m partial to Klipsch anything. Always dug their sound.
Do not get those BOSE acoustimass systems. They sound way too bright, at least to me.
I am digging this:

I have a Denon receiver (I can’t recall the model number) that I’ve had for probably about 5-6 years now that I’m really happy with. I’ll likely go with another Denon receiver when I upgrade in a year or two.
As far as speakers, I have a Polk Audio 6.1 setup that I bought at the same time. I’m also happy with those as well. The speakers I don’t see a need to upgrade anytime soon as they are still in good shape. Plus, as long as I live in my current condo, there’s no sense in getting anything louder.
My neighbors have complained about the volume as it is and I’ve never even come close to taxing the system.

That’s why I didn’t go all out on one. Mine goes up to “50” for volume but that would wake up the whole complex. I usually keep it at 35 or less unless I have a lot of people over.
I think both my tv and ss system are Pioneer but I’ll check again when I get home about specifics.
I have an old Kenwood system that works fine for my apartment, although I would recommend something with an active subwoofer rather than a passive.
Onkyo systems are pretty good, and they have a decent range to choose from. If Circuit City still carries them I would swing by and check them out.

I missed this question in my first post. I use optical for all my audio directly to the receiver, but this is because my receiver lacks HDMI inputs. That’s mainly the reason I’m looking to upgrade in a year or two is to have all HDMI connections for sound and audio.
I’m currently using an HDMI/Optical switcher by Psyclone that I have my HD-DVD, 360 and PS3 all connected to.
My TV only has two HDMI inputs, I use one for my DVR/Cable and then the other HDMI hookup is used with the HDMI switcher for the other devices.
Denon and Onkyo make the best receivers if you ask me. My relative actually bought an old Nakamichi car amp (4x35W but CLEAN) and made his own 5.1 system with Vifa drivers; he built the cross overs himself and the cabinet measurements he got off the MFR website. Best sounding system I’ve ever heard. Unreal.
Polk Audio is excellent, actually. A friend has a Polk setup.
I want a receiver that’ll do 7.1 decoding, get HD and Sirius and have a built in HDMI switcher. I’ll have to check to see if such a thing exists. Sure it does, though…

Thanks for the info so far guys.
So with the receiver, do you connect all your gidgets-gadgets to it (say, TV & console) and that in turn connects them all up with sound?
I mean, just a quick browse but would this:
…give me all I need, so that I would just need to buy some speakers and a sub?

Well that one looks like it only has 2 HDMI inputs, so that’s going to limit you a bit depending on how many HDMI devices you have.
The next model up had 4 HDMI inputs, which will give you a lot more flexibility.
They are the same price too.
I do connect all of my devices to my receiver for the audio. The audio for my TV, DVR, and all the gadgets hooked up to my HDMI switcher all go through the receiver.

Ditto, and our receiver is about 97 years old. We’re planning to get a Denon in the next few months.

I had a good feeling about that one…looks like I won’t be canceling my pre-order just yet.
