Hm, no offense but I thought that afro-samurai was kinda… Hmmm.
Stylish, yes, but all he really does is move, fight and win, move, fight and win, repeat, end.

Cowboy Bebop was great though.

You guys remember the cartoon, Ronin Warriors? That was badass.

I need a good sci-fi show, preferably animated and not necessarily anime.

I’m up for suggestions.

If you liked Serenity, then definately pick up the Firefly box set.

Otherwise, checkout these:

Afro Samurai - A blend of cyborgs, androids, and feudal Japan

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - older, but classic Sci-Fi in my opinion.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - Not big on story, but real pretty to watch.

Appleseed (2004) - Its Appleseed. Hot Women, androids, big explosions.

Appleseed Ex Machina - Its more Appleseed. Hot Women, androids, big explosions.

Vexille - Its like Appleseed. Hot Women, androids, big explosions.

Renaissance - This is unique. Its a PURE black & white, CGI, cyberpunk, detective film. Protaganist is named Karas, which brings me to…

Karas - this was originally an OVA, but its currently sold as two DVDs (The Prophecy & The Revelation) or one box set. Some of the sickest animation to date. Modern Japan, regular demons, demon robots, and a city protector.

Highlander: The Search for Vengeance - Its a Highlander anime! Its really like Highlander meets Fist of the North Star. Definately worth watching.
I’d add Bubblegum Crisis and A.D. Police (though that one was short).
Yeah, I’m getting old I guess ;D

Plenty of others though… Man, I haven’t watched a good anime in years.
Went through all the extreme-gore stuff a few years ago, and some recently, but they all didn’t really hold up to my expectations.

#Edit: Should we make some sort of anime list maybe… Now that this was brought up, I’m starting to remember dozens of titles/shows.

It’s supposed to be a prequel to the game. It’s out on dvd now.

The animation is decent. I haven’t finished watching it yet though.

Edit - this is the most graphic shit I’ve seen in animated form. It’s to the point of being gratuitous and unnecessary.

I finished Dead Space(the game) yesterday…this is a must buy. Definitely will get your heart rate going…its what Resident Evil used to be.

Yeah, I just started playing it and it’s terrifying so far.

Aha!
Don’t you dare complain about lagging arm-size again, seeing as how your arm-routine consists of holding a controller.

Guess you don’t watch much Japanimation. Fist of the North Star had like a 300 person body count.

…but I have seen that. It was almost comical though with the sheer amount of blood.

What I am saying is that this is trying to hit that level with a little more realism.

They speak too fast to take them seriously in classic Japanimation.

edit
After watching it, this is not more bloody than Fist of the north star. I took it more seriously than that though.

I hope that is understood.
WTF!, i posted this before.

Fist of the North Star was kind of low budget and hence poor quality. But i did like the apocalyptic future it was set in (reminded me of Mad Max-excellent film BTW)

Does anyone know any good Manga from the 80s and 90s? I used to watch these well made uber violent, tripped out movies on late night television as a kid.

The only manga series i’ve been able to track down is:

A.D. Police
The Guyver

I thought everyone would have seen Bubblegum Crisis by now. That’s the show that put anime on the map for me. Bubblegum Crisis: 2040 is a classic and easily purchased in box set.

Tribulus started an anime thread a while back. Run a search. Its a huge list of great anime titles and basic reviews.

Ummmmm, if he didn’t win then wouldn’t the show have come to an end?

Manga or Anime?
Manga would be Japan’s version of comic books

The only manga I can reccommend is Dark Horse’s reprinting of “Lone Wolf and Cub” and " Samurai Executioner" in their original print formats.

Judging from the animes:
3x3 Eyes
Trigun
Ghost In The Shell
would all be worth reading.

Anime is the animated/cartooon stories.

As stated
3x3 Eyes
Trigun
Ghost In The Shell
are worth watching.

A whole lot of them are uploaded on youtube (in case you don’t yet know), just search for the title + maybe some episode format thing (2 of 2 or whatever)…

Nah, supersets just keep you out of breath… I say finish with the mouse first, then pizza. And always more than last time.
;D

Thanks Bujo and C.Carnage.

When i was a kid they called (what is known now as anime) it manga.

Trigun, X (there’s a full-length movie and a series - both decent), Hellsing, Ninja Scroll, Record of Lodoss War.

All worth seeing.

Edit: Trigun starts off slow and kind of goofy. Just give it time. Around the 11th or 12th episode (iirc), it turns into SERIOUS BUSINESS.

Hmm, berserk (starts crap/low budget and gets better from there in the anime-series) manga isn’t bad either… Just off the top of my head.

All those old things like Cyber City Oedo 808, Wicked City (I think, there are so many -City thingies out there)…
Ninja Scroll (as a stand alone movie, there is ninja resurrection as well, but I haven’t watched it yet and people say it’s crap… hmm)

Ah yes, Armitage in all versions.

Old trashy stuff has been mentioned a bunch of pages ago by someone else, all those movies along the lines of M.D. Geist 1 and 2 (everyone seems to hate those, but imo they’re perfect for trash-evenings ;D)

Black Lagoon was nice imo (though I could kill the main character for being such a pussy… They must have a xenoestrogen problem in japan or something), though the series should have been way longer…

Chronicles of Lodoss War (or so), the original series (not TV series, that one kinda sucked) was pretty nice.

Bastard!, too.

Wolf’s Rain → Watched it through to the end… Fun imo, but maybe not everyone’s thing.

Claymore was so-so… But if you have the time…

Ninja Gaiden OVA was, hmm, some interesting sword fighting animation I thought (meaning: not seen often, but maybe my memory is skewed), but not worth watching unless you’re a fan of the series… Or so I think.

Absolutely stunning visuals (though minimalistic character design): Wondeful Days (korean SF movie, I think it goes by a different name in the U.S.). Must see for the animation/visuals alone.

Some of the more recent stuff (uberviolence):
-Gantz ← stupid actually… Weird weaponry and setting and all… Idiotic characters… Ending sucked balls, but it was definitely fun to watch (hm). Not even as gory as I expected, though probably more than gory enough for the average person.

Makes you want to jump in there and tell the characters to FUCKING DO SOMETHING ALREADY, YOU GODDAMN MORONS.

 • Genocyber → Some disturbing gore stuff (kids ripped apart by a heli-minigun, Nurse on stool scene…) but dunno, they just don’t make great series’ anymore… And Genocyber itself made me laugh when I first saw her. The weird Cyborg headhunter-pair was cool, for the roughly 2 seconds they survived on screen.

Oh yeah, that advent children Final Fantasy movie mentioned before (that was the post FF7 thing, right?): The battle against that huge dragon thing (or was it a dragon, 's been a while since I watched that) made me wonder why on earth that dragon looked like a bloody plastic toy.

Totally power-rangers style lol. And I hated powerrangers as a kid, still do.
They own the teletubbies, though.

Good graphics otherwise, but kinda pointless (hard to explain) fights and Cloud needs to go eat something.
I actually liked the first FF movie better, though everyone else seems to think the opposite.

What else… Plenty of other stuff comes to mind but damn, what a waste of time to write about all that

#Edit: Elfenlied: I liked the beginning and battles ;D
I’m not Otaku enough to like the standard anime-relationship-cutesy-stuff spiel in between, though.

And god was I shaking my head at…

 • Spoiler alert -

The young boy still loving Lucy even though she murdered his family and all that crap. Very logical.

-/spoiler-

Cyber City Oedo 808, I learned how to swear by watching that show. Ninja Resurrection ain’t bad. It’s a 2-part movie, but nobody ever bothered to make the second part. It just leaves you with this crazy cliff-hanger.

------------Ninja Resurrection Spoiler-----------

There was some crazy Jesus/second coming aspects to the movie, and Jesus was coming back with a vengeance. It ends with the idea that Musashi was going to come out of his self-imposed exile, team up with Jubei, and fight evil Jesus.

------------End Spoiler-------------------------

Yeah, I agree there really aren’t that many epic anime sagas out there right now. Cartoon network does a pretty good job of getting the best stuff coming out of Japan (excluding there decision to run Blood+).

Had never heard of this game till I saw the add for it so I thought I would check it out. If you like Diablo and cant wait this looks like a game you might want to pick up. Looks like it will be ok but I would like to see the reviews it gets.

I would say anything higher than a 7 for a game like this that is not Diablo is a win. I will keep an on it.

Oh, and vampire hunter d. No idea how I forgot that.
