I genuinely didn’t think Last of Us would live up to the hype, but it has truly surpassed my expectations.
Unreal how times change, I remember getting the first Crash Bandicoot for my birthday when I was little and now I got given Last of Us for this year. Naughty Dog have given me some of my fondest gaming memories and it’s nice that the titles have seemed to mature naturally as I have gotten older.
Contender for favourite game of this generation for sure, I have to complete it first to decide if it can do the unthinkable and dethrone Guns of the Patriots.
Isn’t it wonderful? I’ve heard not one bad thing about The Last Of Us yet. Not one since release. I didn’t think it would quite hit potential either, but it’s easily one of the most accomplished games in recent memory, I’m thoroughly glad that Naughty Dog decided to split their dev team and get to work on it.
I’ve adored Kojima’s Metal Gear games since the old Microsoft X ones, I think the competition between Guns Of The Patriots and The Last Of Us is incredibly close, if people prefer it over Metal Gear Solid 4, then I would not even be mad about that. It deserves all the appreciation it gets and it was easily one of the best of the entire generation, a brilliant work of art.
What part are you up to now?
I have just met back up with Tommy at the Hydro.
The thing that is swaying me more towards MGS4 right now is that it started off slow and really amped it up with each act and the final scenes were just heartbreaking.
Whilst The Last of Us started out with stuff I genuinely wasn’t expecting, stuff that was so poignant I was taken aback. But that’s where the magic lies in the game. I genuinely feel as weary and worn as Joel, always looking for supplies whilst Ellie is off on her own world trying to whistle and actually finding her chat charming. The pacing of the story is perfect whilst MGS4 felt sometimes a bit choppy between acts. MGS4 also has the problem of a potentially un relatable protagonist (since hes a clone and hence why I’m so excited for MGS5) whilst you do feel fully immersed into Joel’s story.
BLaaaaaah, it’s a tough one. Will just have to see how Last of Us finishes up. It will be hard to top the microwave corridor, epic fight on top of Outer Haven, the acceptance of a son and Otacons words “Snake…had a hard life”.
Ooh you’re getting close to the end, there’s a real great kind of winter chapter that’s only a couple away from the one you’re on now, I think it’s probably my favourite one, besides the ending, possibly.
Yeah, The Last Of Us isn’t scared of all that dark shit that nobody wants to think about post-apocalypse, and I love how strong and powerful it is behind the storyline. The flavour talk is brilliant, I was amazed by the script and voice acting, there are some references that make me cream too. Did you find the Uncharted and Bandicoot boxes in the toy shop in Pittsburgh? Where the kid wants to take the transformer figure, but his brother won’t let him? I was a sucker for that one, and the Twilight mock posters that show up.
The Last Of Us’ ending isn’t particularly a fireworks display, but it’s very humble and sombre and I think it took itself into some very untrodden paths, which I admire, evening if it’s a little stupid. I genuinely had another ending in mind (you’ll know what the alternate would be once you’ve finished) that would have been equally kind of anti-climactic (in the best way possible), but I have a hard time deciding which I really like more.
I love Joel’s character, and Ellie’s, it’s one of the best video game character dynamics I’ve seen in a while. I kind of just wish he’d have taken a couple hours out of his schedule to teach her how to swim though…at the very least it would have made for stupidly cheesy cutscene humour.
Oh yeah, the death of Zero and Big Boss killed me, and the Liquid fight after the microwave tunnel (the score on which was incredible). I think I might still jump towards MGS4 for nostalgia’s sake and a full investment in the franchise, but The Last Of Us was very adeptly executed.
