Loved the original, but… This (esp. the screenshots on steam, but also the vid) looks VERY console-y… Not impressed with the graphics at all. Fairly low-poly, low-ish detail (faces, cars etc), so-so animations, simplistic effects… I’ll probably get it anyway for old times’ sake, and hell, it may still be a great game of course…
But I can’t shake the feeling that it’ll be a mediocre console port (like EVERYTHING lately? Even goddamn dragon age 2!) and the engine looks like they took the old UT (unreal) engine version they were using for the first game and simply modified it some. Seriously. This does not look like the latest Unreal engine… Or are they using a different one now?
It’s pretty obvious that they did not develop this with the PC’s current (and near future) capabilities in mind, or even the most recent graphics trends.
I’m half expecting to have the recoil system be the same primitive thing they used in Deus Ex 1 ![]()
Still… If the original team is working on it, at least the game will be fun regardless.
Just please don’t turn it into dragon age 2 - Deus Ex edition…

Completely agree about everything being “consoley”. The shift is happening due to games being so easily pirated on PC’s. BTW CC, have you played Witcher 2 yet? I swear to god, that game is one of the most engrossing I have played since I was a kid…

Not that piracy is at 0 fault, but it has more to do with developing on consoles being far easier and the allowance of DLC marketing, since Mod communities can’t exist for console games.
This is infinitely more true with the multiplayer first style of game, where piracy isn’t even possible(require valid cdkey for online play).
Hopefully Battlefield 3 will change that.

You can find hacked online keys…just fyi.

It won’t be unless then have dude companions doing their damndest to mount you like they did in DA2.
God that was an awful, awful game.
Well, about the piracy thing: Console players can just exchange the games they’re done with at certain stores and get different ones… Currently still legal… (I forgot the word dammit)
Seen reports that suggest that this is doing more damage to the console market than piracy does to the PC game market (remember that while we may be fairly internet and computer savvy and many of us have been around for a while… Lots of casual gamers are still too afraid to pirate anything or flat out don’t know how… Etc…
Plus steam is working really well these days and makes it easy to get games on the cheap without even leaving your doorstep or ordering them via amazon or whatever).
And as for the DLC + mod community thing, the DLC may be true but it’s also the mod community which made games like Half Life impossibly popular way past their regular playing shelf-life, allowed valve etc to rise to fame indirectly… Responsible for CS and so on… Big part of the success of UT and Q3 etc as well (though both stood on their own feet well enough) HL is not a game you play through many times as it’s always the exact same thing (worse with other games of course). Mods can change that, and have.
See, the game-exchanging issue the console market is facing would most likely not be anywhere near as severe if a proper mod community (and modability) existed there… People would need to keep the games in order to use the mods. Or hell, even if the DLC market were better than it is, cheaper (or with more freebies) and more content released over time.
But yeah, developing for consoles is easier and you have the advantage of less technical issues being present once the game is released… Because everyone has basically the same console (except maybe for HD space or whatever, and of course potential other consoles the game may be released on).
Well, I don’t mind consoles at all. I’m disappointed in PC franchises suddenly crossing over and then porting to the PC, instead of the other way around… With outdated graphics (less an issue early on in the current gen console’s lifetime, but def. an issue now), horrible controls (mouse accel because of how console controllers work… WHY DOESN’T ANYBODY MAKE MICE AND KEYBOARDS STANDARD FOR CONSOLES ALREADY? IT WOULD IMPROVE THEIR OVERALL USEFULNESS BY A BILLION PERCENT DAMMIT), terrible glitches, overall console-ish feel that console shooters esp. tend to have with few exceptions…
Anyway. Played witcher 2, but don’t have much time atm (renovating the house). Got through the prologue and chapter 1. Apart from some slight issues with the combat and clipping (plus the crafting materials being in EVERY SINGLE FREAKING CONTAINER EVER) it’s definitely better than the original so far.
You actually tend to need the signs… Esp. in certain situations.
For all those who have yet to play it but want to: DO NOT PLAY ON THE EASIEST DIFFICULTY, it makes enemies NOT defend against your attacks and really messes up the whole combat dynamics.
If it’s hard at first (against groups), don’t let yourself get caught in the middle, do hit and runs (roll in, strike, roll away if you get surrounded, DO NOT LET THEM ATTACK YOU FROM BEHIND), USE THE SHIELD SIGN and maybe the trap sign (insta-kills sometimes if you attack a trapped guy) and make your first priority the swordmaster ability to hit multiple guys.
After that it’s much easier.
Duke Nukem Forever: Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Nice details on some of those enemies, but very low detail on the human skin, faces etc? Console development again? Early version?
Looked like Serious Sam tbh. I hope they can capture the original games’ character instead of making the game too silly/cliche’d… Not so sure about it though.
Not at all sure if the whole thing is even remotely relevant nowadays either. DN3D was fun back in the day when I was a kid…
Oh well. Not really a title I’m waiting for to be honest. Guess I’ll pick it up once the price drops and if the reviews of the gaming sites that aren’t retarded like the big ones are positive.

Ahaha. More amusing because at least one (or both?) show no sign of being gay unless YOU are male. So their character changes completely. Bit lame really, at least keep it consistent…
Plus the developers sort of bullying you with the “love me or I’ll dislike you, and no, this dialogue is not optional!” -thing is what’s really annoying about it.
My wife complains that there are no romance-able male companions who aren’t rather twink-ish.
She wants a proper hero in there to woo. I responded with “Yeah, I didn’t give the developers permission to put me in the game, sorry”.
It had the desired effect.
The thought of her cheating on me with glow-in-the-dark - elf though… Noooo… I bet he uses 2-handed swords to compensate for other areas, pfft.
Oh and about the used-games exchange thing again: I think it’s perfectly fine.
Why?
Because most games offer zero replay-ability and are short as hell. NOT WORTH THE DAMN MONEY.
Same for PC games really… In recent years that’s really gotten worse and worse…
Cool C_C - I was about to request a review from you for the Witcher 2.
Please keep us updated?
I will… But it may be some time before I get around to playing through chapter two and the epilogue…
FWIW, even the non-mainstream gaming press is praising it. Geralt is also a much better character now than he was in the first game imo, easier to identify with… (if that was an issue for you before)
So… Should be pretty safe to get. It doesn’t completely baby and spoonfeed you though like so many games nowadays, beware. You’ll have to figure some stuff out and the morality and consequences of your decisions aren’t so painfully obvious or negligible as in, say, fable or most other RPG’s. coughMASSEFFECTDRAGONAGEFALLOUTcough.
It may also be worth to play through it several times to see the different paths you can take. Nothing’s really black and white…
If money’s tight, I’d say you’ll be spending more time on this than most other games (all?) which have come out recently… Unless you’re a Sims-addict I guess.
Also one thing: Disable the super-sampling. Everything else can be maxed if you have a half-decent machine… Maybe go easy on the shadows if you don’t.
I’m doing my best to hold it off atm - it’s dropping in price every week (already a 30-40% difference) + I’ve got some other titles that are close to finishing.
Your comments about the story/decisions is good to hear - I didn’t really get that much into the originals, although I did enjoy the game.
Thank you for the heads up on the super-sampling - I’m curious to find out if I’ll be able to play on max. (doubtful, the shadows like you mentioned will be a problem)
Looking forward to the rest of the review
The only negative reviews that I’ve read for this were from bitter ‘Bioware’

Hahaha that’s just embarassing.
As I’ve mentioned before there IS a bit of awkwardness in the combat etc, but it becomes less and less of a problem the further you progress in the game.
Dragon Age two is so console-y and awkward that bioware really can’t make a favorable comparison without lying their asses off.
The whole misogynistic thing… Eh. The female characters make up most of the strongest in the game (in both characterisation and fighting strength fwiw). The game doesn’t beat you over the head with the sex part anymore either.
I think all the scenes are entirely optional (and you do not get to sleep with everything you see anymore, not at all. There is actually a herbalist/priestess or whatever whom you can meet and she doesn’t trust Geralt to keep his hands off her at first, and he basically says that he has no desire to do anything. I was like, “Geralt, are you feeling alright?”).
I obviously haven’t played through to the end, but so far, I’ve found it possible to stay entirely faithful to Triss… And she’s the only one you can’t avoid seeing naked (prologue… And why would you not want to, anyway?), though nothing happens.
Witcher 2 > Dragon Age 2 by a mile.
Warning: It has quicktime events, but they’re mostly easy. Example: Fist-fights (to get money etc). I just sort of stare “through” the screen roughly at my character and simply note where the keys appear (i.e. to the right: Press D/Right) and that’s it.
Arm wrestling is a bit more tricky with the mouse, but easy enough to figure out.
Never tried playing Dice, I’m not one for gambling and I’m too stupid to understand the rules anyway.
A little warning: “Hunted: The Demon’s Forge” recently came out on steam… Lots of complains all over the web about the game being outdated as hell and bad or whatever… Have not tried it, but I figured I’d give people a heads-up.
Anyone here got it?
Also: Vid and more pics of 40K Space Marine game available.
That is to say, Space Marine, Comic/Serious Sam edition.
Did they use the DOW Engine for that or something? Goddamnit. Why can’t we have the proper dark and gritty thing FOR ONCE.
Weapon Mechanics didn’t seem too great to me either (at least the guns).
I doubt it’ll be as bad as Fire Warrior, but still… WH40K universe has so much potential… Why do they keep turning it into such kiddy-crap…
Another warning: Fable 3 came out on Steam recently (though it’s been available for the 'box for a long time already it seems) and it looks horrible. I had quite a bit of fun with the old “Fable: The Lost Chapters” for PC. Not great, but it was fun.
We tried out fable 3 at some friends’ place… I’m glad I did not buy it.
Fable 3 looks either the same or wrose than the original, I dunno (never tried the second). Really low poly geometry, shitty-ass textures, lack of antialiasing (though you may be able to turn that on via graphics driver suite), awkward controls… And the typical Molineaux bullshit in terms of morality etc.
And the game totally spoon-feeds you everything. You get to follow a neat little glowing path everywhere so poor you doesn’t get lost in the amazingly simplistic I MEAN COMPLEX AND SATISFYING gameworld.
The endgame is so ridiculous it hurts. Esp. because you apparently have no option to tell people what’s going on, or did I miss that?
Overall the game mechanics are even simpler than they were in the first fable, though the overall gameplay isn’t horrible or anything (the dating part and buying property are, however).
What’s even more amusing is that it really is so painfully obvious that it’s a port. At times, you lose direct access to the menu (esc) and instead have to return to some kind of pocket dimension thing which is the physical embodiment of… The esc menu. Seriously. You have to walk through the right doors to get to the char statistics, and you have to walk up to a part of the wall where the options are displayed, and THEN you can access the proper menu to save, exit etc.
What the hell, they just added unnecessary steps which make saving, loading, changing settings, viewing char statistics, equipping stuff etc TAKE TEN TIMES AS LONG.
Remember Terra Nigma on the SNES? That game DID IT BETTER.
So yeah. I would get the witcher 2 instead if you’re looking for an RPG with lots of stuff to do…

Because Australia is lame - they cut out a particular quest where the reward was sex or something, pretty weird - But that’s down under for you.
Triss haha, is the voice acting for her still crappy - man she was terrible in the first one.
The combat in the first one was pretty awkward as well I thought - until you got used to it, but I’ve read that there’s been a huge improvement though. Which is good.
I don’t know about you but I dread quicktime with a passion - it’s a fun killer and there’s nothing difficult about it, I enjoyed the bar fights in the first one - so that’s abit of a shame.
Bioware are sore losers
Is the dice game - dice poker (like the 1st)?

What specs on your computer do you have? Mine isn’t all that great currently, quad core, geforce 260 gtx, 4 gigs of ram and after playing around for a bit I eventually turned everything on ultra, turned off uber sampling and am now locked at about 50-60 fps and it looks phenomenal and runs smoothly.
Also, that’s the perfect strategy and easy is too easy…until you have to fight another witcher.
