Mmm… me think Ridley’s not telling us everything. I still hope he is lying. I really really want Promotheus to be a Aliens prequel. There are so many clues in the trailers that give that impression.
I like the fact it’s an altered reboot. The plots of the previous films were heavily influenced by the ‘Corp’ so it will be nice to see a franchise develop around the exploration and perils of a new world, as opposed to the hero of the tale combatting both aliens and the corporate world.

Well, at least I think it has potential to be good. I’ve always been fascinated by the ‘Pilot’ scene, so I don’t really care what Ridley does with the history of the franchise as long as he lets that imagination fly!

Looking at it from another point of view, Loki engineered everything in Thor from the start (reigniting the Frost Giant war, to Thor’s banishment, to the destruction of the Bifrost Bridge) so he could fake his own death and seek the CC unhindered.

He sought the Cube to raise the army. There’ll be plenty of carnage on the way, but I don’t think his endgame is “just” to conquer Earth. He could have been king of Asgard.
Re-igniting the war with the Frost Giants, and getting Thor banished were definitely due to Loki’s scheming. Manipulating Thor to destroy the Bifrost Bridge? That’s a bit of a stretch. He was already ruler of Asgard and killed King Laufey. Seems a bit extraneous to give that up just to fake one’s death. Now he has to constantly hide from Heimdall. Plus everybody knows that Loki can move between the realms without the Bifrost bridge, so that has to cast shadows on the whole “fell to his death” thing.

I’m hoping that by the end of the Avengers movie, the Avengers will have vanquished some great evil force, and Loki will have stolen the cosmic cube to set up some dire threat for the sequel.

I didn’t think Prometheus counted as any kind of “reboot”. It’s just another tale from an already existent fictional universe and time line. It’s like saying the tale of Perseus is a reboot for Hercules stories just because they share the same Greek mythological setting. The link between Prometheus and [iAlien seems tenuous at best despite the marketing departments best efforts to make the trailers as nearly identical as possible.

I was hoping for more than just Loki the Marvel Universe has such a rich amount of characters they could bring up(why I hated Venom in Spiderman 3, and War Machine in Iron Man 2)

I’ve covered all this in the Thor movie thread. Loki’s primary objective was to acquire the CC on Earth -something he couldn’t do with Heimdall watching him. He already tried to neutralize Heimdall once; breaking the Bifrost is just another method of “blinding” him. The war, Thor’s banishment, and the bridge were part of a greater plan.

The destruction of the bridge and Loki faking his own death so no one would think to look for him on Earth were necessary steps in the acquisition of the Cube. Loki’s unique ability to move between realms unaided actually supports this.

Promo for Prometheius.

Well, it’s merely guesswork at this stage without actually seeing the film. But if it has Weyland in it, has the pilot in it and has dome-headed murderous aliens with acid for blood in it - I count that as a reboot of the franchise however much Ridley may want to sell it otherwise. He is using characters and scenes already referenced in previous films and changing their origins.

But our definitions of reboot may vary.

Wait…what?

  1. Loki, for a moment, was the ruler of Asgard. With Laufey dead, had Thor not come in and ruined everything, Loki could have invaded Frozenheim, and conquered that realm as well. As ruler of two realms Loki could have sent spies or armies or whatever the fuck he wanted to find and claim the Cosmic Cube. Or even commanded Heimdall to look for it. That’s way easier than the convoluted process you’re proposing.

  2. Heimdall’s abilities aren’t tied to the Rainbow/Bifrost bridge. It’s just a good place to put a sentry. Heimdall could be sitting on the golden crapper of Googleheim after All-You-Can-Eat-Taco-Tuesday and still look out across the universe seeing all, hearing all.

  3. Loki’s plans went to shit once Thor regained Mjolnir. Deciding to free fall off the Rainbow bridge wasn’t an attempt to fake his death. It’s called, “getting the Fuck out of Dodge.” If folks think he’s dead then that’s icing on the cake. Had he stayed in asgard, Loki would be serving out whatever tortuous sentence Odin may have dreamed up. At least on the lam Loki can dream up a new scheme.

  4. There wasn’t a “Greater Plan”, just Loki doing his best to make lemonade from lemons.

“You can thank me later.”

“Could have”. He didn’t. Here’s why: Loki didn’t just go to Earth in the middle of the movie to taunt Thor in the SHIELD encampment. He had business there. The post-end credits sequence ties this up with Selvig looking for the Cube guided by Loki. The rulership of Asgard was not his primary goal: it was the recovery of the Cube (which for all intents and purposes had been “lost”, having been dug out of a viking grave by Hydra in The First Avenger). He was only ruler as long as Odin remained in Odinsleep. You call it “convoluted”; I call it a necessary strategy to avoid an inevitable defeat when Odin wakes up.

His plans appeared to go to shit. Loki knew his reign was temporary as Odin was bound to wake up at some point.

Loki was chasing the CC before Thor regained Mjolinr. It wasn’t his plan B, though it appeared to be. See above. He’s not known as the trickster god for nothing.

Wow. Those are some weak ass arguments.

  1. The Odinsleep.
If things had worked out according to plan then there wouldn’t be a fight between Odin and Loki. Loki would have been the savior of Asgard. Odin would have given the crown to Loki, assuming Odin ever awoke.

  2. Loki didn’t go to Earth to taunt Thor. He went to remove any and all hope Thor may have had for returning to Asgard, thus eliminating the one other claim to the throne. Loki was shoring up his position as the new ruler.

  3. Heimdall’s powers are not tied to the bridge.
Haimdall failed to see the Frost Giants breaking into the armory, Loki’s solo trip to Frozenheim, and Loki’s trip to Earth. All events occurred prior to the destruction of the Rainbow Bridge. If you weren’t sharp enough to pick up on that Heimdall also confronts Loki about it on screen. Loki, also on screen, admits to knowing how to hide from Heimdall’s gaze and move between realms sans Bifrost bridge.

  4. Selvig wasn’t looking for the Cosmic Cube. He was looking for Nick Fury, the guy who summoned Selvig to whatever basement they were in. Selvig didn’t even know there was a Cosmic Cube until it was revealed to him and Loki both.

Loki lost the match to Thor and the prizes too. The Cosmic Cube is the set up for the rematch. There is a reason Loki is known as the trickster god and not “The Conqueror of All Creation” God.
