Ubisoft is one of the best game companies ever. They think outside the box and their stuff does NOT look rehashed like most of EA’s games.
What Ubisoft did with the control system of Assassin’s Creed was really incredible. Look at how many buttons and actions they crammed in. At times I needed the manual to remember the controls, but I was impressed with how much functionality they put into the game.
Look at the major of Ubisoft titles in the past few years. They just keep scoring big.
Blizzard is the other badass game company.

Isn’t M$ also offering movies to download on XBLive now, too? Again, I haven’t explored the newest features much. I don’t thin HULU and Netflix is available outside the US.
I have a Bluray player on my laptop, but wasn’t planning on going out of my way to get one because I thought it was a waste. Even though the quality is impressive, as broadband gets faster, downloading and streaming will be the best choice for sure.
I think they will go this way with the next console, judging by their latest dashboard updates. A 500gb or even 1TB hard drive + a paid monthly account for unlimited movies and music, and they will be dominating the market by a large margin. That is of course, if they can make a console that doesn’t fail after a few months because of heat issues.[/quote]
I forget the internet isn’t without borders. You’re probably right about Netflix and Hulu. For streaming movies the techies are getting better and better at streaming higher resolution videos while using less bandwidth. RedvsBlue is a good example. I believe their vids stream at 720p now using less bandwidth than the older lower res vids used to.
XBOX Live market place has all kinds of video to download. TV episodes, music videos, movies, etc… I don’t use that aspect too much, well I download free videos like “The Guild”. I’m using the photo of Felicia Day as a shameless plug for “The Guild”.
I would like to see a 1 TB drive on future consoles but that will depend on how big the games get and how much folks plan on downloading from the MS Marketplace.

Carnivale and guns, always a great combination. Reading the articles in Game Informer, Ubisoft has been working hard to eliminate the repetitive aspects that so many complained about and increase the combat play. If you liked the first game then you should love this one. Or so they claim.

Gotta say much thanks for this recommendation. I picked this up on the strength of your very high praise for the series and I was not disappointed. I am in the middle of the second book in the series and I am thoroughly hooked! The story is very engaging and the characters very likable. It really makes you think about the parallels between the civilized world and what we deem to be uncivilized or savage. Damn good read.

Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Mobo
Intel Core i7 920 “D0 Stepping” 2.66Ghz

I’ll be getting an external 2TB which I’ll use for all my data.

Get a good cooler; like a Prolimatech Megahalem or Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. The i7’s run hot! Good CPU though, I’m running one at 4Ghz on the computer I’m on.
Also, if you’re primarily doing documents and gaming, you should consider the Radeon 5870 as a graphics card. A better choice for gaming IMO, and only an extra $50.
If you do a lot of encoding and other stuff, Nvidia is still better choice. Also you get physX and CUDA, but you’re sacrificing DX11 support. If the new batch of Nvidia cards are out by the time you build it, check them out. They’ll be more powerful and more versatile, but probably carry a price premium.
Heck, if you want to go all out, grab this and boot everything that isn’t a game off it:
Sure, it’ll be the most expensive thing in your computer, and no-one knows if they’ll work after 5 years, and you probably won’t fit all your games on it. But fuck it makes everything run fast.

Holy crap! Those things are huge, they completely replace the fans, huh? Looks interesting, I may look into getting one, although I don’t overclock anymore.
Would there really be a need for one of those? It voids a warranty using them, doesn’t it? (If something goes wrong, that is)

I’m planning to build a powerful graphics machine. So I’m sticking with Nvidia - and although I do a lot of 3D, the rendering speed is more dependant on the RAM/CPU/MOBO than it is on the graphics card. I don’t need the best GFX card out there, but it needs to be decent.
I was going for 12gb RAM, but according to Tom’s reviews, there almost no difference unless running a server type setup.
I considered a SSD, but I’ll buy one when the prices drop because, honestly, I’d rather have the 10tb of HDD space than that increase in speed I’d see from one and the price you pay for it.
It’s something that can always be added at a later stage, I suppose.
You pick up one or two fans to go on the coolers. They are frikking huge, but they do the job well. The main benefit (aside from way lower temperatures and better overclocking) is that the noise from a 120mm fan is way easier on the ear. I spend way too much time on a computer to put up with a continuous high pitched whine; it seriously makes me feel like hulking out.
They don’t void the warranty, unless you physically damage the CPU while mounting the heatsink. This is a small risk with the Thermalright, but basically impossible with the Prolimatech; the only way you’ll damage it while attaching is if you accidentally drop it on the CPU. Generally you’re careful about dropping 1 lb chunks of metal onto $300 silicon though…
I think decent aftermarket cooling is worthwhile. The noise difference is something you can really appreciate(if you can get a comparison in a computer store it’d be worthwhile).
I know that for my money, I’m getting something that will make it more pleasant to be around my computer, and that it will extend the life of my CPU (cooler chips last longer).
I won’t get into overclocking; I do think it’s worthwhile and whatnot, but I’d rabbit on.
Since you aren’t looking to overclock the bejeezus out of it, it’s also worth having a look at the Noctua NHU-12P. Unlike the other two, it comes with a fan. A damn quiet one too. I would be VERY surprised if you can hear it over the case fans, even running it at full bore. The build quality is excellent, and it is still great at keeping things cool (while not being as good as the two mentioned earlier) . The retention system is pretty good too. The Prolimatech retention is better, while the Thermalright is bloody terrible. A pain to install and has the disconcerting habit of allowing the cooler to rotate when you are working on it.

You ig’nant bastard! For you sir I will allow this youtube vid to respond for me:
I’m going to go get Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law Trilogy since it seems to have gotten two thumbs up and an erection from everyone.
It may have came up in previous threads, but have people read much by David Gemmell?
Most of it is quite formulaic, but told well so you don’t really care. I really enjoyed the Druss series, starting at “Legend”, and the first two Rigante books: Sword in the Storm and Midnight Falcon.
I’m awaiting the second season of Dollhouse. Again, like the consensus seems to be, I was surprised by how much I got into it after being lukewarm at the start. Is it wrong to be afraid of liking something too much and then having it get axed?
Is there a name for it?
Can we call it Firefly syndrome?

I take it y’all are building your computers from scratch? I’ve been flipping computers. Taking old Compact Presarios, HP Pavilions, or any other bread n’ butter email machine and turning them mostly into media/video/home entertainment machines. Basically making networked DVR/web browsing computers for the den or living room. Anyways, I’m finding myself with a lot of extra parts that I don’t know what to do with. What does one do with old 300 watt power supplies, 120gig HDDs, used motherboards, and cd/dvd disc readers?

eBay?
You can literally sell anything on there…and the small money you make from each part will add up - maybe even enough to build one decent machine.
Just started to play Uncharted 2…fuck me I need to get a better tv(trinitron 720p) to fully appreciate this games graphics. The gameplay is great so far. What I’m really enjoying is the storyline and the voice overs. It kinda reminds me of the movie serenity, lots of one liners and banter between characters. Feels like a movie. Lots of bonus treasures to find to go with the shootin’ and killin’. This game looks like a winner imho.
Well this will be my 1st post in a few months dew to military goings on. I’ve had time to skim the forums and the web site a few times but not much.
Anyway this is a big time of year for video games and movies. Uncharted 2 last week, Tekken 6 today, Dragon Age next week MWF 2 the week after, then Assassins Creed on the 17th. I have neither the time or money to play all these games as they come out but I cant wait to play all of them.
And Vader the Old Republic is going to be SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!
And if anyone wants a beat down in Tekken 6 hit me up on PSN
Not sure if you guys have seen this or not but there is a new AvP game in the works. The Marine and Alien trailer is up on IGN and I saw the Predator one on PSN.

David Gemmel is the shit…read em’ all, Have you read the Waylander series? Just like the others but still good. It’s cheesy but good…If they made them into movies they would be awfull to watch but as a book it’s great, if that makes any sence. It’s a shame he passed away a few years ago. Also check out Matthew Rielly, military action and he’s also an Aussie.

lol

That does look pretty sweet from the demos, but I’m not sure if I’m going to get it. MMO’s are just too much of a time sink for me these days.
I’ve mainly been playing the following lately:
Arkham Asylum
Ultimate Alliance 2
Fallout 3
Brutal Legend
I preordered Dragon Age, so I’m really looking forward to that as well.
