Gear Guide Discussion

If you compete in Iron Boy, you are going to be walking your squats out, in which case, unless you want to set WIDE after walking out, youre not going to want the ace briefs. I didnt have a chance in hell of getting down with my normal (raw) stance in those briefs.

Also be aware that Iron Boy is ridiculously strict with their judging and even my training partner who competes USAPL said they make a lot of overly harsh calls. Detazathoth got red lighted at the meet we did for “not staying upright enough” and any amount of shaking on deadlift would get you red lighted for hitching.

Yeesh. I’m learning so much. I respect deep squatting but one of the most unappealing things about the USAPL is it looks like you gotta go ATG, Captain Kirk deep in order for your squats to count.

And walking the weights out is something to consider as well. I don’t have access to a monolift during training and I tend to do better when I walk out with a moderate stance than when I try to walk out to a wide stance.

If you dont have a mono to train with, I would go with something other than the ace briefs. Just my opinion though, Im sure there is someone out there with more experience that will disagree with me, haha.

So what would be a good choice for me if I just wanted a suit? Metal Pro Squatter? A Frantz Canvas? A Sweaty Old Z-Suit and some tight long johns?
I’d recommend the Metal Pro Squatter as a first suit. It doesn’t have a radical cut, gives really good support, and has some nice carryover.

Alright then. I’ll probably get that regardless of how you answer the following questions, but I just gotta know:

(1) Will I be able to do my Dynamic Effort training in the Pro Squatter with the Straps down? Do I even want to? I don’t really have a problem with doing my Dynamic Effort work raw for a while, but will I have a chance of getting to a Parallel Box with 275 and some Average Bands?
(2) Is it possible to get into by myself?

Yes, absolutely wear the suit for DE and ME lifts…straps down for DE, and straps up for ME as you break the suit in and get more comfortable with it.

I can get into all my own gear by myself, but getting it off is sometimes a different story, but even that, I can normally wiggle out myself. It just comes off easier with the help of a few others.

Haha yeah… doing those deep squats is way too hard when you can just lift in a fed where you don’t have to go as deep right??

And to answer your earlier question, a suit would be a better choice than briefs in my opinion.

Fuckin right.

Not a strength athlete but this looks to be the place for the question…

My wrists have been hurting for the few days after I bench, and (correct me if I’m wrong), wrist wraps should help with this.

I was wondering what brand would be recommended?

Tumbles, any brand will do. Titan or Inzer you can’t really go wrong with, and if you don’t want to do them tight get 20 or 24" wraps.

Anyone try the super Katana yet?

How do you guys feel about the viking 2ply and their briefs as well, im thinking about buying…

I have been looking into knee sleeves and knee wraps as I am about to start a brutal Smolov Squat program and I am interested in keeping my knees healthy.

It seemed that although there was some crossover between them, sleeves leaned more toward simple knee health while wraps were more for performance. Thus, for the ease of slipping them on and because I don’t plan on making a career out of powerlifting, I was considering buying sleeves. Plus, I only plan on doing raw meets every now and then and wraps aren’t allowed.

After doing some research, it seemed that there was considerable consensus that Rehband were a great brand. Size wise, I was going to get the next size down from my actual measurements. I figured that I would get the benefit of the warmth and also get more support if it was slightly more snug.

Any thoughts?

Nice thread guys. I’m starting to consider gear for the first time here, probably a few months away, but I’m looking at options now.

I deadlift conventional, and currently I’m squatting narrow stance too (olympic style) and plan to for a while. So far after reading through the suit review thread I see:

Metal ACE, Metal King Conv. DL, the Fusion, Centurion NGX+

Any additional advice for a shopper? I realize some experimenting and trial/error is expected of course.

Also, it should be noted that when I say narrow squatting, I mean olympic ATG/capt. kirk deep. My goal for this year is a 600 lb raw/belted ATG squat. However, I do plan to start using equipment at some point in the future, as a narrow squatter. My primary concern is being able to get deep ATG narrow. Looking for good carryover, but I don’t need to be top of the line, just something that I will be able to grow with for some time before looking for more advanced stuff.

I have ace briefs and an ace suit. The last time I had both on, I weighed roughly 230. These were both sized for a TIGHT 242. They basically slid right on.

That said, I had 600 on the bar and could barely get down to a high box. The ace/ace combo is so much support, probably too much for most people.

I have read several times now that boss briefs/ace suit are a great combo. If I get deeper into PL, I would invest in the boss.

Right now, when I have been able to squat, I like the ace briefs. Even loose they give some support and confidence.

I have a titan fury right now and am just starting to play with it. It is loose as well and with how much I’ve used it, I’d guess it’s good for 100lbs? Before I go much further, I will probably just buy the new katana because it appears to be the shit!

Monopoly

Hey guys,

Not sure if I should be posting here but here goes.

Any advice on where to buy “beginner” weightlifting\powerlifting shoes, as well as which ones you’d recommend?

I’m currently residing in the UK (will be back in Ireland by July) so any websites\advice specific to buying wl\pl shoes in the UK would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

WL/PL shoes are completely different.

What do you want them for?

Sorry. I meant to say weightlifting shoes only. I’ll be doing cleans, snatches, jerks and oly squats. (I’ll switch shoes for DL)

Looking for some advice on a single ply USAPL or IPF cert’d suit that is good for slightly wider than shoulder width squat stance? Any does that suit have carry over for Coan Style Sumo; Semi Sumo I like to call it

Unless you go crazy tight, baby powder isn’t really necessary. Plastic bags for bench shirts and suit slippers for briefs/suits seems to do the trick.

If you have a loose enough shirt, you can get it on yourself too. I was under the impression open-back multi-ply shirts were easier to get into since you don’t need to pull it on over your head.

I agree, no baby powder. It may help you to get it on, but once you do get it on, it’s still there. So it’s hard to set your shirt/suit properly and stop it from moving about.

I woulda said the same about multiply shirts and putting them on too… the open back’s a big help. I cut half way down the back of my old shirts to use in training and it made it so much easier to put on.

If open back shirts are easier to put on, what are your thoughts about the Metal Bash Single Ply Bencher? Or maybe there’s another good beginner’s shirt made by someone besides metal with an open back. I’ve looked through the reviews but I really don’t know what to look for.

Man just buy an F6 and slice the back of that fucker up. Much easier!! An open back shirt is the exact same as a closed back, except the back is open!!

The F6 comes with a stretchy back anyway so even cutting it half way is loads. I actually cut the back of mine half way and then stapled the end of the cut wth a couple of staples to stop the end of it running any further.
Any reason why you recommend the F6 over the fury? …I mean most people don’t have that much of an arch. Some people have major arches and they get way better carryover from the f6…but after speaking directly with titan and ken anderson they both told me that if I have a moderate arch I’m better off with a fury or katana.

No one squats that way?
