Future Music

X, if you want to check out an interesting band, google Calexico and check out some of the free shit on their myspace page. They’re sort of an instrumental/southwestern band. Not great gym music but good kick back and relax music.

Whatever happened to listening to good ol’ death metal before workout, during workout, and post workout? It doesn’t make you fat like carbs do…

HAMMER SMASHED FACED

I?m not sure if they?ve been mentioned before, but my three favorite bands are Tool, Isis and Dream Theater. P.S.- Dream Theater?s new cd is awesome

I don’t know if its been said already but, bring back 80’s rock.

You might enjoy “The Drift” by Scott Walker. scott walker jesse (2006) - YouTube

Sigur Ros is also pleasant.

Dunno if someone mentioned them already, but:

Deadsy.

REALLY cool industrial/goth/80’s throwback band. Reminiscent of Orgy. Had a minor hit a couple years back with “Gramercy Park”.

Any recommendations for bands that have a musical sound like Killswitch Engage but without the typical metal yelling?
If your not dead set on KE’s style you can try some bands that are still definitely metal but little different sound, Killswitch is generally pretty clear as far as vocals go so I don’t know where you’re going to get a whole lot less “yell.”

In Flames(try the newer stuff, Come Clarity and Soundtrack to Your Escape albums). Soilwork has a good metal sound , the vocals are still kinda yelled but it’s a lot clearer than your typical metal growls. Dark Tranquility is also a good one to check. All 3 of those bands are also almost completely absent on this thread, which is kinda surprising because I almost always see a huge debate sparked about In Flames “selling out” in their latter albums when metal is discussed.

Some of the female lead metal bands listed earlier might be a good listen for you as well since they accentuate their vocalist(give these some serious listening and don’t delete right away, it really does grow on you).

Another good thing to try is mass download some songs from similar artists listed with Killswitch on Last.FM and just delete the ones you don’t like. Almost every metal band will deviate their style a bit from song to song, leaving you with 3-4 songs per band you will enjoy, with a few bands sticking out as staples in your collection.

Finally if I had to endorse one band that I think has a good future and is fairly recent, 10 Years has been getting a little airplay and has a great sound. Paralyzing Kings is one my favorite songs right now.

Meh, the Dream Theater is alright, pretty much a snoozefest in a lot of parts, and they haven’t been “progressive” in years, but still a band I love to see. I think In Flames and pretty much all Gothenburg metal pretty muchs blows and/or rip off of later Entombed and At The Gates, with that being said, Dark Tranquility is still pretty decent even though in my eyes, they will always fight an uphill battle to get rid of that Gothenburg stigma.

Honestly I don’t really listen to anything that came out past 1995. Music nowadays is terrible. Everything is about image, image, image. I really don’t share the optimism that others have shown for music on this thread. It seems that more and more young people listen to todays music simply because they are told that it is good, rather than making a decision for themselves. I remember the first time I heard Pearl Jam’s Ten (Although they suck now), Nirvana’s Nevermind, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Appetite for Destruction, Straight Outta Compton, and License to Ill. I had no idea what those people looked like or what they were all about. The music just sounded good. Same thing with music that came out before I was born: Jimi Hendrix, The Temptations, Led Zeppelin, the Doors. The music was just good. Nowadays there is a face and image to put to every song. I’m willing to bet more than half of the popular groups out today don’t even write their own shit. The music industry isn’t about the art of making music anymore, it is all about making some fat rich bastard an even more fat, rich bastard.

The Killing Tree
Rise Against
The Sleeping

I highly suggest them.

My fiance is taking me to Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin and Puddle of Mudd concert tonite.

I have heard them all from the CD’s she blasts constantly. I actually like some of their music.

We are 45 by the way. I’m am in throwback mood now however. That’s the way my moods run in music. I will listen to most anything, but ultimately it depends on my mood.

I have teenagers to so I get to hear Linkin Park and such, but I also have to take the crap “pop” music with it. My daughter likes country so I can keep up with that also. Heck I still hear old music that I haven’t heard before. For instance I never liked Def Leppard when I was young. Went to see them and Journey in concert. Loved it and have them on my Mp3 now.

So Profx, are you finding any nuggets of gold from this thread you haven’t heard before?

Since people are counting bands like Radiohead as “future music”, this expands my suggestions.

Pretty gnarly “new” stuff:

The Knife ( actually, almost “new” )

Air ( same deal, pretty “new” at least to N Americans )

Guitar Wolf ( not that “new” but why more people don’t know about this band I’ll never know )

I can live with but am not dying over:

The Killers
The Bravery
Maroon 5
John Legend

That’s all from me for now…I feel like shit and I have a lot of obligations.

Cheers to this thread. Though I’ve seen very few artists I listen to mentioned, I LOVE music and the passion people have for it.

There’s a TON of good music out there – of every genre, for everybody who wants it. You just need to look around for it a bit! You may not hear it on the radio, or on MTV/VH1, etc. The internet is a great source, as is checking out and supporting your local music scene.

Some current-day artists who I love:

Tom Waits (still rockin’ it!)
Ray Lamontagne
Hank Williams III
Gillian Welch & David Rawlings
Ryan Adams
M Ward
Robbie Fulks
Wilco
My Morning Jacket
Lucinda Williams
Son Volt
Old Crow Medicine Show

I started listening to various kinds of electronic music and I the quality of music is superb. Main problem with alot of mainstream music is that people have nothing good to say. I dont want to hear what anyone has to rap, sing, or croon about these days.

So with most electronic music it is all about the instrumentals, so it had better be good or it will not do well. There is no rapping about cadillacs and shit that hide the fact that the actual track is shit.

Deffo agree with Shadowzz4. Sasha and Diggers are legends.

The new Kings of Leon cd is pretty good. They’re one of the best newer rock bands out there…
Jack Dempsey, you speak sense.

Kings of Leon are a breath of fresh air and certainly stand out in the stagnant sea of sound-a-like wannabe. I started listening back in '05 and they quickly rose to be one of my top ten bands. I will see them live for the third time in September. I recommend every one of their albums. The guitar solo is alive and well people, as is good music, provided you know where to look.

Band Of Horses are another that bent my ear southward. “The Funeral” is such a stellar song, and their whole album ‘everything all the time’ is reason enough to get in the car and do it all another day.

My Morning Jacket are along the same lines…haunting and unusual. Don’t know what to say, men and beards …a slightly southern twinge, but by no means country, just a bit of southern rock style, and there is a vast difference. Check out ‘okonokos’…double live album.

Those are just three new bands that have permanency of rotation on my song list, but not of any radio station list. It bothers me to hear people say there is no good music left, but with what gets airplay and passes for music toward the masses, its certainly no surprise.

Band of Horses- The Funeral

and lastly, because its one of my favourite videos,

Smog- Rock Bottom Riser

Visually stunning, and Smog (aka Bill Callahan) is a great songwriter.
