Really? We have some major senior lifters here then, 'cause I’ll be 52 next month …

The neck/back issue is doing better and I’ve been able to do a fairly “normal” workout routine the last week or so. I’m pretty used to coping with chronic pain, but I’m surprised how much this issue messed with my head. I guess there’s a limit to how much pain I can handle at one time, and I hit the wall.
I’ve been going to BJJ, but not Muay Thai. For now I’m undecided what I’ll do about that. I want to get a bit more time under my belt feeling better before I make any final decisions. Muay Thai has actually been my first choice, so I’m feeling kind of conflicted about the possibility of having to drop it. It’s probably a matter of deciding how much punishment my body can take and still stay healthy. None of this stuff is going to do me any good if it screws me up.
Cardo is the same as always.

That is a good perspective to keep.
Wish you well.

Thanks El!
Now on to the “minor” issues. I feel a little like a hypochondriac when in truth, the problem is that I’ve let a few things slide and now they’ve become bigger problems.
The right knee got jacked a month or so ago in BJJ. I thought it was fine, but apparently it’s not. It only hurts when I put pressure on it a certain way … which only made it easier to ignore. I’m not exactly sure what the damage is, but I saw my massage therapist last night and she worked the heck out of my right hammie. Hurt like hell, whereas the left one didn’t. That might help.
Second problem is MUCH more annoying because it’s almost impossible to ignore. OK, I think I see a trend here. If I can tune the pain out … which is something I’m good at … I’ll continue to operate as though the problem doesn’t exist. Hmm. That’s probably not a good thing, huh?
Anyhow, back to the list. Right forearm/elbow/bicep. Again, not exactly sure what the problem is or where it originates from, but the crux of it is that it hurts like hell when I roll my wrist over. (Think: pronate to supinate and vice verse.) The pain is right in the forearm/elbow/bicep junction and is excruciating … enough so that I haven’t been able to train arms in about two weeks, little own do a buttload of other things that involve that kind of motion. (Barn chores are a killer) I have to wonder if the tendons were irritated by doing a lot of punching? Damnit!
Again, the massage therapist worked the crap out of it (OUCH!!) and thinks it’s probably tendonitis. Great. Now what? I have a TENS unit that I think I’ll try using today. Can’t hurt, right?
So the good news is that the neck/upper back is still holding it’s own. Three steps forward, no steps back. Yay! The bad news is that I’ve got a few more issues to straighten out before I can say I’m out of the woods. The knee isn’t preventing my doing cardio or training … thank God … but it may cause problems for BJJ. Meanwhile, the arm is cramping my style in everything big-time.
I’m not bitching … really. I mean, I’ve been lifting close to 30 years and I’ve never had any niggling injuries. I guess I’m just a little thrown by the way this all came up at the same time. I feel like I’ve been putting out fires since early November.
Oh well. This too shall pass!
Cappy
3 steps forward…no steps back. Not a damn thing wrong with that in a big picture view!
Good synopsis Cappy
Update:
Still struggling with the tendinitis in the right forearm/bicep. I can hardly support any weight in that hand and flex the arm, which means I’m pretty screwed for doing … well, just about anything.
Everyone who has worked on it and everyone with experience with this sort of problem says it should get better, but slowly. OK, but HOW slowly? Patience is not my strong suit. That said, I’ve been good about resting it … well, as good as you can be while still having to care for several large animals … and wearing the support strap, which is pretty annoying.
Believe it or not, throwing multiple Frisbees for the dogs (several times a day) has been one of the worst offenders of this problem. It took some doing, but I’ve switched everyone over to a ball for now, which doesn’t require forearm rotation to throw. I tried using a kick ball, but that bothered my knee injury! It’s been a bit tricky to navigate around a wounded flipper and rudder on the same side!
There have been days when this has really gotten me down. I’ve been doing my regular legs/abs routine, but that’s about it. I’ve tinkered around with various machines and DBs and BBs to see if I can do anything else, but I haven’t had very much success.
While the knee is a whole 'nuther issue, it hasn’t been bothered by cardio, so I kicked that up a notch to compensate for the drop in other activities. I’m doing cardio intervals three-four days a week, some steady state running/elliptical just to expend some pent-up energy, and power walking (on an incline) up to 6 miles per day. I split my cardio up into a morning session and an afternoon session. I’m still a bit antsy, but at least I’m tired at the end of the day. (OK, who am I kidding … I’m usually shot by 8 PM!)
I stopped by one of the dojos on Wed. That picked me up a bit. It’s nice to hear you’re missed!
I’ve been reading the logs here, just not posting much. Funny how that happens when your own training takes a step back, huh?
OK, off to do some cardio! Carry on!
Cappy
I’ve got some of the same thing in my left arm right now.
Sometimes what helps me is light and slow neg curls. Enough to get blood moving but not enough to strain anything more. Sounds like yours is right painful though.
I hope you’ll keep posting. You observations and comments are always worth reading.

Ditto Skid’s observations Cappy. Hope the arm and stuff works out ok.
Carrying on here, Ma’am! Good to hear from you again. Bad to hear about all the aches and pains. No sage advise to give except give it time. We do miss you.

Cappy,
I have it it sucks .
It started 2 maybe 3 years ago in my right armand is migrating to the left.
I have a physical job with lots of repetitive
work, coiling BIG cables , tools ladders
how we work in television lighting
all take a toll on the forearm. Add typing
yes typing and training, it got bad.
I took off a year, from training, but mostly do to being overworked, over trained, and other injuries…
Now its getting better, here is some of what I have done.
Ultrasound, based on a suggestion from someone here ,a few visits to a rolfer.
I wear a brace on it from time to time
I also had to give up several things
direct arm work, pullups some o-lifts
and most overhead work.
and no judo BJJ grappling etc
complete suck and plenty of deprssion
In the beginning I had extreme pain, crippling pain, ice rest both helped so did time- the pain now is almost gone from the right arm but has now moved to the left.
Ultrasound ice and extreme massage helped,
fish oil too.
Its hard to heal when your active
we can talk more over pm if you like or need

OK, in case anyone is wondering, the right arm is still crap. Mostly useless most the time. So I did legs, then tried to get a little blood into the biceps. Hurt like a bastard, but by the third set of curls (EZ bar) it didn’t hurt quite as much. (Ended with a humiliating set of 30 lbs.) Funny, how we’ll grasp at straws. Any straw …
Four hours later feels just like is has for the last 3 months, which is to say it’s mostly useless and hurts like hell.
Crawling back under my rock now …
Carry on!
Cappy
Hey there you are…

What’s your diet like? Particularly the level of carbohydrates?
[quote]skidmark wrote:

Hm …
A typical day would be:
Breakfast: 1-egg/ 5-white omelette with diced green pepper, mushrooms, onion, Quinoa or cottage cheese or a slice of Alpine Lace cheese. Or oatmeal with blueberries, chopped walnuts & cinnamon. 1/2 grapefruit. Fish oil caps.
Snack: Celery with natural peanut butter, homemade hummus or guacamole or a serving of cottage cheese (if I didn’t have it for breakfast.)
Lunch: grilled diced chicken tenders or 1 can tuna (or any leftover meat/protein source) over a spinach salad with diced veggies. Sometimes a piece of fruit. Fish oil caps.
Snack: Nonfat plain yogurt with cinnamon & chopped apple or blueberries, or lentil soup or tabouli
Dinner: Grilled Fish, foul, beef, lamb or pork, a steamed veggie, 2 Tbsp. brown rice, quinoa or sweet potato, small tossed salad w/ balsamic vinaigrette. Fish oil caps…
Cappy
Thanks for indulging my nosiness. I and many of my friends have noted that cutting back the carbohydrates relieves symptoms of tendinitis and generally makes us feel better.
But I don’t see a whole lot of simple carbs in that menu. What I do see is that you eat a whole lot better than me…

Yeah … it’s a curse. Honest. When it comes to food I’m a real buzz-kill. ![]()
I can’t cut any more carbs, simple or otherwise. I do too much cardio. Thanks for trying to find a suggestion I could try though!
Cappy
Sucked it up and tried a light upper body workout yesterday. It was pitiful. Lots of dropping DB’s due to intolerable shooting pain. Screw it … did it anyway. OK, so it took two hands to get my right hand into position … so what?
Crap. Not good.
Today it hurts … well, just as much as it’s hurt the last 3 months, which is to say a whole bunch. Hurts even when I run.
I am not a happy camper!
Cappy
hang tough Cappy.
try a big fat ice bath
