Fruit juice

In designing my diet is it OK to use fruit juice as a carb source for some of my meals?

Absolutely not! Enough said.

what type of diet? Bulking, yes. Cutting, no.

yea!

hetyey- Do you purposefully give people the wrong answers or are you just that fucking ignorant when it comes to lifting and nutrition? Do ever actually READ T-mag or do you just come to the board and pass around really bad advice? And it’s spelled “yeah”.

Real answer- Fruit juice is not ideal, especially when trying to lose weight. Eat a little fruit, but skip the sugar water fruit juice. I’m guessing the GI is pretty bad, too.

lol.

If i’m out of Surge, i mix like 12 oz of grape juice with a scoop of protien and some glutimne, but the ONLY time i drink it is post workout, weather i’m bulking or cutting because of the high GI.
PS - i can’t spell

GI-index for fruitjuices isn´t that bad, orangejuice = 76, pinapplejuice = 66 and applejuice = 58.
And because I´m from europe the GI-index is based on whitebreed and not plain suger.

Wouldn’t it depend on the type of juice? The ‘from concentrate’ and the ‘punch’ juices are loaded with sugar, but fresh squeezed and ‘not from concentrate’ are just like fresh…right? I usually just read the ingredients, and if the second and third end in ‘ose’ I don’t buy it. Please share any info!!!

I’d say fruit juice falls somewhere between fruit and Koolaid… It’s not as bad as drinking those watered down juice drinks with sugar added, but it’s not as good as just eating the whole fruit. Eating the whole fruit will fill you up more and provide some fiber.

Spanky, fruit juices may be actually worse than kool-aid when on a diet, depending on how you evaluate it. Fruit juice and Kool-aid both deliver a bunch of sugar in water. the juice has fructose and Kool-aid is mainly sucrose i think. I have read that fructose is metabolized different than other sugars and has a nic ability to shut down “fat burning.” If you want some fruit eat some strawberries or rasberrys, whole.

I talked to Cy Willson about this earlier to get his opinion on a new article I’m writing. Cy is a big fan of fruit (read his “Forbidden Fruit” article for details), but here’s what he had to say about fruit juice:

“Processed fruit juice is worthless in my opinion. Before I would have said
to use it as a post workout source of carbs but with Surge, that isn’t
necessary and is less efficient. Also, with whole fruit, you get so much
more. The fiber, more phytochemicals (way more), more nutrients, period. Not
to mention the compounds that are unique to certain fruits and those that we
aren’t even aware of yet. Plus, it’s more filling. Fruit juice is an easy
way to over-consume calories and increase body fat. Now remember, I’m
talking about fruit juice concentrate. The processing is what reduces the
amount of these special phytochemicals and other compounds that we aren’t
aware of yet. If you’re going to consume juice, then you should make it
yourself.”

dman, depends I guess. I don’t think fructose is as bad as everyone makes it out to be, at least in smaller quantities… I pretty much agree with what Cy Wilson says about fructose. But I’m with you on the whole fruit, I think it’s the way to go.

do any of you realy think it will make any real difference in strength, fat loss, muscle gain, etc… if you use fruit juice as a carb source in some of your meals? lets get real!

personally i do think there could be a big difference between muscle gain and fat gain or muscle loss v. fat loss when fruit juice is or isn’t involved.
