Where to begin. This is another example of the misinformation and bad science used in this ridiculous conspiracy theory. To quote TenMan, ?By the way, on June 14, 1970, Knight (B4 Knight-Ridder) newspapers published a story that based on interviews with 1,721 people in six (6) cities, a full 30% of them did not believe that U.S. astronauts had been to the earth and back.? This constitutes a logical fallacy, argumentum ad populum, or appeal to popularity. If so many people believe in the fake, it must be true. Well, this poll was taken in 1970. 1970. A 1999 (1999) Gallup poll asked this question, and came up with 6%, not 30% (see http://www.gallup.com/poll/releases /pr990720.asp ? remove the space after releases), and, to quote the Gallup web page ?Although, if taken literally, 6% translates into millions of individuals, it is not unusual to find about that many people in the typical poll agreeing with almost any question that is asked of them – so the best interpretation is that this particular conspiracy theory is not widespread.? Keep in mind that over 50% of Americans believe in astrology. To continue, again quoting TenMan, ?Wally Shirra is quoted from February 1966 as saying, ?I doubt if I could have flown my (Mercury and Gemini) missions if I had encountered as many foul-ups as the Apollo crafts.?? This is also a logical fallacy, argumentum ad verecundiam, or argument from authority, where Wally Schirra is cited as an authority. In 1966, no manned Apollo missions had been flown. The first manned moon landing was still 3 years away. The first manned Apollo flight was Apollo 7, in October 1968. The commander of that mission was Wally Schirra. Hardly a skeptic, I?d say. As far as the foot pads assertion, I don?t know what you?re talking about there, so I?ll just have to let that one go. Everyone, repeat after me, NO LEGITIMATE SCIENTIST BELIEVES THE MOON LANDINGS WERE FAKED.
