Friends Getting Older Sucks

My point about all that, though, is that we buy into the idea of ‘phases.’ You are x years old? Why aren’t you: married, paying a mortgage, etc?

It’s what time of year? You should be doing xyz.

Life is not a goddamn assembly line. I am the one responsible for putting a smile on my face, not you.
Truth!

…respect.

And the song “James” by Billy Joel comes to mind..
“do what’s good for you.. or you’re not good for anybody..”

JAMES

James
We were always friends from our childhood days.
And we made our plans,
And we had to go our separate ways.
I went on the road,
You pursued an education.

James
Do you like your life?
Can you find release?
And will you ever change?
Will you ever write your masterpiece?

Are you still in school
Living up to expectations?
James
You were so relied upon,
Everybody knows how hard you tried.

Hey
Oh, look at what a job you’ve done,
Carrying the weight of family pride.

James
You’ve been well behaved, you’ve been working hard
But will you always stay
Someone else’s dream of who you are?
Do what’s good for you
Or you’re not good for anybody.
James

I went on the road,
You pursued an education.
James
How you gonna know for sure?
Everything was so well organized.

Hey
Oh, now everything is so secure,
and everybody else is satisfied.
James
Do you like your life?
Can you find release?
And will you ever change?
When will you write your masterpiece?
Do what’s good for you
Or you’re not good for anybody.
James

This thread kind of surprises me - in terms of the number of people that have removed themselves from their friends. It seems a little alien to me - I mean, you DID choose your friends. Even if their goals physically and career ambitions are different than mine, I’m still going to try and at least communicate with them, whatever I can.

Maybe I have a different view because I’m relatively young, but I just can’t imagine ever abandoning my friends because of a few obstacles in each other’s lives.
It’s very different when you’re young. when you have more responsibilities, you have less time to “chill”, hang out" or whatever. It’s normal. usually people in their 40s that are always running around with friends don’t have much of a life.

you have a serious job, family and such and your priorities won’t allow it.
