Some background informations :
we (the French) are long time specialists of street riots. Because of this, our politic system made a pretty strong distinction between public and private space, public freedom and private freedom.
Here, Public space is definitely gouvernment business.
This law was initially writen to answer two distinct suggestions
the first one came from the gvt, who wanted to ban full mask in protests, in order- to identify violent agitators more easily.
the second one came from teachers, especially those who teach very young kids. They wanted to be sure the burqa wearing women at the door of the school were actually the children’s mother.
judges and banks had similar “identity check” problems too.
this law will apply to all kind of full masks in public space and public events (but it probably won’t be systematically enforced in the streets).
but it won’t apply to all kind of islamic veils.
last (but not least) we made it clear from the start that our views about immigration wasn’t the “melting pot” version americans tend to favor.
our obective has always be full cultural integration of immigrants, even if it imply some kind of westernization.
or, in the present case, a minimal “dress code” (no islamic full covering, no amazonian style nudity)[/quote]
Thanks for your comments. It is definitely a touchy subject but after reading what you have to say, it seems like a good decision. They better be ramping up their counter-terrorism efforts though.
more seriously, true riots are pretty rare. but “hot” protests are quite frequent. it’s a bad habit we took after the Revolution. (we have changed our political system 13 times since 1789, 7 times during 19th century).

That is not a bad habit, that is a civic virtue.
You really do throw the bums out regularly.

I’m inclined to agree. It’s the people telling the government what they expect of it…activism.
what we have is :
-farmers throwing tons of shit on official building : usually, the gvt listen
-truckers / routers blocking the roads and slow the trafic : usually, the gvt listen
-“ghetto” youth destroying cars in the street : usually the gvt let the police invade the suburbs
-legions of civil servants stopping their work : usually the gvt doesn’t care
-all kind of leftists shouting slogans in the street : usually the gvt laugh
-etc
these protests are rarely the expression of the General Will
but they provide a important if indirect benefit : since we have so many vocal minorities, we have very few properly organized lobbies.
Muslim woman arent running around committing crimes. The laws are in place to try and keep muslims from wanting to go to france, to show they arent welcome there. Because the muslim men are running around commiting crimes. And thats the big thing they want to keep out, besides french woman have a reputation to uphold, and having a bunch of over-covered up muslim woman isnt going to help.
