Which would be better to go into (in your opinion) Marines - task force recon or army ranger?
In my opinion you should actually finish basic training before you try and become some kind of ninja marine one man death squad.
Both units are excellent. You can’t enlist to go into Recon units in the Marine Corps. You must enlist as an 03(Infantry Occupation Field) Marine, and then you will be given an opportunity to take the Recon test at the School of Infantry.
I believe you can enlist to be a Ranger, provided you pass the tests. I can’t speak for the Army though.
The Army and the Marine Corps are different, with different values and cultures.
Pick the one that best fits your goals. If you have the heart and discipline, than you will be able to get into the elite units if you want.
Good luck.

If he’s realistically thinking about Spec Ops then basic should be a walk in the park.

LOL. Actually, the guys in Basic and AIT who talked most loudly about how they wanted to be Rangers were some of the biggest tub of lards out there and barely passed PT tests.

Basic was a joke.

Can you do 20 pull-ups from a hanging position? 100 each of sit-ups and push-ups in two minutes for each exercise? Run 2-miles in under 11 minutes; and 5 miles in under 35 minutes?

You’re working on it, but you’re not there yet. Get yourself through basic training (you made that thread about what basic training is like only 3 weeks ago or whatever, so I’m assuming you haven’t gone through it yet) and get a feel for what it’s actually like before you try and join Delta Force or some shit.

If it is still structured the same as it was 15 years ago, becoming an Army Ranger goes like this:
You tell your recruiter that you are interested in going Ranger, at which point you will have to pick an Airborne MOS (remember the song, “I wanna be an Airborne Ranger…”).
Once you’ve completed basic and your MOS schooling, you go to Fort Bening for 3 weeks of jump school.
Once you’ve gotten your jump wings, you can apply for Ranger school. How they pick/choose candidates I do not know, but I understand there is a waiting list.
Try www.socnetcentral.com and other sites using google.
I always read guys on the Special Ops boards talking about how comparing two different units is apples and oranges. Different missions, so no comparison. Choosing one or the other should be based on your interests and not because you heard one is more badass.
Also, Special Ops pipelines are very difficult and most don’t make it through. If you do go that route you better be ready. Good luck.

For Recon you will have to swim too. At least our Battalion Recon platoon did, my rommate at the time went Recon.
Good luck!

Haha, classic! It’s a great point though. Based on numbers, you probably aren’t going to make it to Spec Ops. You’re constantly tested on these pipelines, and chances are some injury, illness or brain fart will catch up with you at some point. I’d go in expecting the best but planning for the worst. Do you want to be a grunt in the Marines or in Army?
That being said, you can get a Ranger tryout written into your Army contract, which is great for a number of reasons. And since troops are spread so thin, you can even get a SF tryout written into your contract. I think it’s a stupid idea, but more power to the soldiers that make it through. The Marines, Navy and Air Force might be doing something similar now. Anyway, go read a bunch of Spec Ops forums.
Always remember that if you sign up to be an Airborne Ranger and you don’t make it the Army can put you where they need bodies. You could end up a cook or whatever. I’m not sure what the Marines do.
