Apparently, ingesting protein+carbs following intense excercise does not enhance recovery in women any more than solely ingesting carbs (and in fact P+C ingestion may have actually reduced performance). The opposite is of course true for men. Note, however, that the studies were done on endurance atheletes (cyclists), not strength atheletes. Also, only 12 cyclists were studied and the doctors who conducted the experiement are quick to note that no definitive conclusions should be drawn until additional experiements are enacted and results are replicated.

Not sure how relevant this is to most people here since recovery from cycling exercise is primarily based on glycogen replenishment.

This is not the case for hypertrophy-based weight training.
