Alright, from all the great info you guys have posted I think I’ve come up w/ a solution. Scince I use the westside system, I think that I’ll use the flat bench as a max effort every other or every 3 weeks. For thr dynamic days I’l use mainly over head presses, the push press is a pretty dynamic thing. I’ll use incline and close grip press as an accesory exercise on a rotation. Hows that sound everyone?
I wouldnt ignore the Bench in your training. I tend to think it is impossible to say one type of lift is solely more sport specific than others. You are quite right in assuming the importance of overhead movements but I would also suggest that within the O-Lifts, the Push Jerk and the Drop Snatch offer significant assistance to your training. If you look beyond the O-lifts, movements such as a Bent Press, Saxon Side-Bend and the Turkish Get-Up will assist your core stability tremendously. You may also wish to consider a narrow grip (ie shoulder width) for Incline Presses within your pressing sessions. Good luck. In faith, Coach Davies
You’re better off using an exercise from John Davies known as the Iron Cross. This will allow you to incorporate upper-body and lower-body explosiveness.
Thanks for all the great info guys.
I went off on a tangent. The explosive lifts are not gagdets or circus acts. They have their place in a well periodized training plan for football. I’m just tired of the “gurus” you are trying to re-invent the wheel.
