Foods being Cooked

Hey t-foke. I have a question about cooking food. When i cook foods how do i know how many nutrients are being cooked off. For example: the nutrition facts for hamburger patties reads 30f, 0c, 20p, How many of these calories are being cooked off or are these nutrition facts for cooked food.hmmm.

In the case of meat, you’re actually making the proteins more digestable and available by cooking it. In the case of veggies you want to keep cooking to a minimum.

thanks-but what about loosing fat. When i cook a chicken breast i can see the fat on the bottom of the cooking tray. How do i know how much fat is lost. If a hamburger says 30g’s of fat does that mean 30g’s when cooked.

well for fast food atleast, some say pre-cooked while a few say after cooked. For home cooking, i suppose you could save all the grease (like if you have a george foreman grill) and measure it and calculate stuf…

Chris Shugart- i cannot calculate my last days food until i figure this out. please help

Joel- Don’t sweat the details. There’s basically no way you can tell what you “cook off” so why worry? It’s minutia. Think about it: You know when you make a protein shake how some sticks to the side of the blender? How about when you get a scoop and maybe this is one is a little more rounded than the other one? Or what about that bit of egg white that sticks to the bottom of the plate or pan? Or when someone (like my daughter) wants a bite of my food, what am I going to say, “No, I’d have to weigh that bite first and calculate the macros. Now go play with Barbie ya little troll!” You can’t count that stuff and you’d go nuts if you tried.

Also, keep this in mind: If you “cook off” a little fat when grilling a steak, so what? You’ll cook off a little every time, right? So why worry about it? It all equals out. Just write down your numbers (pre-cooked measurements) and don’t sweat it.

I’m a big believer in food logs, but you can take it too far. I’ve heard of BB’s worried about the carbs in toothpaste, a sure sign that it’s time to get a life.

So, in short, just stick to whatever the label says. Sure, it may be a bit of an estimate but as long as you keep the big picture in mind, you’ll still reach your goals. Good luck!

Maybe sweating the carbs in toothpaste isn’t taking things too far. Given the intellectual development of some pro’s, they probably eat the stuff by the tube.
