Focus on the Essential

N i do enjoy your rack pull numbers, but must threaten you if you get to 315 before i do.
I’m a closet saddist. I will rush to that 315 with your punishment as extra incentive. Deadlifts are now my focus lift.

I’m not convinced. But I will let it slide. I understood what you were getting at Joe, and you’re right, generalities about anything is never smart.

like bald guys are better lovers. right? ;)
Yeah no kidding, my wife will be glad to debunk that stereotype.

LS & Pch = Thank you for dropping by and flattering my ego  It’s one of those big ones that need to be inflated regularly.

Hi Guys,
Here’s a little something I wrote for the January/February catalogue that I thought might reach out to a few of you…

Flipping Attitude

It is the eve of January 1st; you are standing under the sparklers, a glass of bubbly in one hand, surrounded by the people you love. You tell yourself, â??this is it: this is the year I will loose 20lb, stop smoking, start working out, run a highly successful businessâ?¦â?? Honestly, how many will wake up nursing a headache, resolution out the window after the first few weeks of hard work?

Under the euphoria of a charged moment we feel like kings, we can take on the world and there will be no obstacles strong enough to bar our progress. Eventually this resolution bubble deflates until all we are left with are uncertainties, stress, worries and self criticism. Am I saying that resolutions are useless? That change is impossible, desire for progress a waste of time?

Of course not, the problem with this tradition is the method. We focus on the outcome rather than on the tools that will help us achieve the desired outcome. Itâ??s a little like trying to win a race and focusing on the car so much you forgot to learn the track. Do you honestly think performance will trump knowledge in highly technical events? Letâ??s back up a little: you are still standing under the sparklers, champagne in one hand, loved ones around your other arm and the world is your oyster.

Yes the champagne has a little to do with the euphoria of the moment but it is only one piece of the puzzle. The important aspect in this picture is how you are feeling, the attitude and energy you project, and this is what I want you to cultivate for your 2011 resolution. Learning to draw from a source of positive energy will ensure your chances of success in whatever endeavour you try to accomplish. Not only will you succeed in your specific goals but this will also reflect in all aspects of your life.

Letâ??s take a moment to analyse why in that precise moment of time we know that we are unstoppable.

First and foremost everyone makes an attempt to look their best on New Yearâ??s. We choose outfits that make us feel like a million dollars and spend a few more minutes than usual polishing our looks. In business and everyday life you project on the outside how you feel on the inside. You want to look and feel successful? Take a few moments to put yourself together properly.

Wear something you are comfortable in but also boosts your pride a little. Keep a few key pieces that will make you smile in a heartbeat. I have heels that can make any rainy day turn fabulous. Heels, a colourful scarf, a nice leather document holder, a special tie, a well made jacketâ?¦ If weight loss or hitting the gym more often is your resolution why not invest in clothing that will make you feel good now rather than wait until â??Iâ??ve lost those 10lbs firstâ??.

Feeling comfortable and happy in your workout clothing is a big motivator to head to the gym. Treat your self to a little something that will create an aura of calm and confidence. When your confidence is strong, standing up to temptation is a breeze.

The second important aspect of that New Yearâ??s moment is the people you surround yourself with. In most cases these are your family and friends, your private team of cheerleaders who support you through the best and worst of times. Finding a circle of like minded people is an incredible source of positive energy. Generation gaps are often the cause of conflict at work. Rather than focusing on the traits that are different why not concentrate on common goals? Everyone is aiming for success.

Having difficulty with the senior staff? Use them as a source of knowledge, find those who have achieved what you seek and approach them as mentors. Are you lacking patience with the younger generation? Give them specific targets and reward them for attaining them. The knowledge of one group and the energy of the other can work together rather than against each other to further improve your business. If you are trying to eat better and lose a few pounds why not place a friendly bet amongst pals?

Winner gets a paid spa session, something the whole group can share. Are you trying to be stronger? The best trick is to hangout with guys that are bigger than you and glean a few tips from them. Being the strongest in your gym may be an ego booster but the chances of improvement or slim. Basically hanging out with people driven by the same goals, sharing failures and accomplishment will create camaraderie and remind you daily of the goals you are trying to attain.

The final ingredient to this New Yearâ??s glitter is the celebration. Celebrate every little step you achieve towards your final goal. Every pound lost, every quarter target achieved, every lift getting stronger. Celebrating, and sharing these moments will help you recreate that euphoria from which you will be able to draw when the well is dry.

And trust me, there will be moments when the desire to mow down obstacles dies down. But every goal worth reaching will have its setbacks, the victory of course, all the sweeter once achieved. Keep mementos of these landmarks in order to rekindle the fire. Here are a few ideas that are known to work.

1- Make videos of your best lifts
2- Take progress pictures of your weight loss
3- Indulge in a treat you have been eyeing for some time. If it is a particularly decadent treat, share it with others.

Negativity is part of the human conditioning. Believing that it doesnâ??t exist, or wonâ??t affect us is highly naïve and vowed to failure. Learning coping mechanism to block negativity from overpower your life is incredibly empowering. When Iâ??m feeling under the weather I simply call my mother and vent, pick up a good book to escape or hit the gym to get rid of the anxiety and frustration.

Once I have dealt with the negative energy I am left with a calm, collected state of mind that can critically analyse the issues and find optimal ways to resolve them. We all have habitual patterns, some of which can lead to further negativity. Know yourself, your faults and weaknesses and surround yourself with people and things that keep you strong and confident.

Keep pictures and images of people or animals, real or fictive, which have the traits you seek to develop. In moments of uncertainty ask yourself how would they handle the situation: with fear or confidence, determination or weakness?

Remember you are always able to recreate that shiny New Yearâ??s bubble for yourself throughout the year. Cultivating the right attitude is your number one weapon in achieving your goals. Learn to draw from a source of constant positive energy. May this 2011 bring you confidence, strength and happiness, May you learn that staying positive is a way of life, and the journey is always as important as the destination.

Happy New Years!
Cheers

… a little early, I know

Holy mother! PRs all over the place

Those rack pulls are impressive! And great squat numbers! Go Mainy!

very nice article!

That’s amazing work, N. Inspiring, to say the least. It motivated me and I feel like a normally motivated person when it comes to most things. That article WILL motivate others to do something great, and you should be proud to know that you’ve (or you will have, once it’s in print) changed peoples’ lives with your words.

Go YOU!

Thanks Guys, usually my stuff doesn’t really crossover to TNation but I thought this little peice was rather general.

Tonight’s breakdown:

Dips:
+10lbs 1x10
+25lbs 3x5
bodyweight 1x12

Squats:
95lbs 1x5
135lbs 1x5
185lbs 2x2 - PR + 1 rep - going to vid these on saturday morning when it’s quiet to check depth and form.
155lbs 2x2
135lbs 1x5

barbell Split Squat
75lbs 3x8

Kroc Rows
50lbs 1x15 - I really don’t know how you girlies deal with 70lbs. I had to reset my left hand like 3 times.

Hypers
+25lbs 1x5 - felt to heavy, back was tight from squats and rackpulls

 • 10lbs 1x5, 3x8 - stopped. Shooting pain in my lower back running down my right butt and leg. Luckily the walk home and the warm shower seemed to have fixed a goof part of this. Lower back still feels toasty but not scary bad. ouff. close one.

Watching BladeRunner tonight like a couple of geeks.

Nice PR frenchie!
And do video that squat so we can check out your form… Uhh. I mean technique!

Sounds like all the glute and lower back work caused enough of a pump to compress a nerve. Keep watching it
