I agree that there have been some very good points raised here on both sides.
It’s certainly true that - generally speaking - there’s no really good reason to be egregiously rude to someone. But let’s look at what happens here on the forums. Not what could happen, or what, in an ideal, kinder, gentler world would happen, but what really happens.
Let’s say that Newbie A posts a stupid/lazy question. S/he gets flamed. S/he goes away.
So: now there are two issues. One, the forum loses either a potential contributor OR a total tool. While there is some possibility of the former, chances are astronomically higher that it will be the latter.
Two,said newbie probably will not become a T-person. While this is certainly regrettable, let’s face it: if getting a few harsh comments over the internet is enough to drive you away, you probably don’t have the stick-to-it-ivessness to make any real change in your physique. I mean really. Can anyone honestly argue differently?
But wait, there’s more!
Now let’s look at the other side of the coin. Let’s say that we treat all newbies with the utmost respect. No harsh language allowed. We can instruct, we can tell them (politely) to use the search engine or whatever, but it is forbidden to flame anyone. The worst that we can do is ignore a given post and simply not answer it.
In this case, first, someone will probably answer it and give the newbie the info s/he wants. So Newbie A gets an answer. Second, there is no real negative feedback, and thus no real reason for the newbie to do his or her own searches. Sure, some might, but the majority of people being lazy, the majority won’t. They’ll just keep on posting and getting answers without any criticism.
Since there is a relatively finite number of people who (a) have a decent level of knowledge and (b) will take the time to share it, it stands to reason that the newbies will, by sheer numbers, come to dominate the forums. Not only that, but the vets, getting sick and tired of trying to deal with the flood of newbieness, will leave.
People, this is the real point. And again - this actually happens, has happened here, and undoubtedly will happen again.
How many of you remember Bodz? Got tired of people telling him that he didn’t know what he was talking about (when he did) and left. Great poster, fantastic amount of knowledge (he was the first real forum stud), now gone.
How many remember Whopper? I know Timbo does. Whopper was pretty much single-handedly responsible for Timbo’s fantastic transformation from stick-man to T-stud. But again, a bunch of non-contributors gave him a bunch of shit about stuff and he finally split. Too bad.
Mufasa? Gone. Booga-brain? Gone. Hell, even Bill Roberts, a god among us mere mortals and blessed with the patience of a saint when it comes to answering the same questions again and again, finally got fed up. (Don’t believe me? Do a search on finasteride and see for yourself. You’ll get an hour’s worth of reading, 2/3 of which will be BR explaining the relationship between finasteride and steroids over and over and over…)
I could go on, but I think that the point is made.
So while there’s usually no excuse for rudeness, I’ll reiterate my initial point that it serves as a prophlactic measure here on this forum. And, yes, honestly speaking, a lot of the time it just plain makes me feel better to flame the crap out of some guy who won’t take the time to do a little reading. If that makes me immature or a bad person… well, I guess I’m immature or a bad person. On the other hand, I’m still here, plugging away. As is TEK. As is goldberg, and several other vets.
I think that counts for something too.
