“My thyroid…”
All jokes aside, that sounds like a miserable condition.
I know balls about C# lol. I read that it’s similar to Java, which is something that almost every programmer should know but I could be wrong.
I just wanna say everyone should pick up Docker lol.
You go read the fucking code for setting up a fucking basic HDFS cluster and your eyes will bleed. And you can only use Java IIRC.
With Docker, I can just go pull one from a legit repository into a container. Then there’s Kubernetes…\
Ok, I know like I sound like I’m joking about Docker but I’m NOT. Where I live, knowing containerization one of the key requirements. Most of my non-web development clients have started been using it since 2020. And so is linux. I don’t know about the West, though. Maybe it’s already the norm and you’ve covered it from the start of your course,
But seriously, if this is not the case, just look up Docker and anyone who can count to 10 will understand why.
And here’s why I’ve been preaching about the Zettelkastern method. I managed to get through uni studying a pretty rigorous course using something similar since I had to work several hours a day, The biggest similarity is that I never studied by subject, I studied by:
- Developing a basic conceptual understanding of a subject. This is a top-down approach which I use at work but it is not optimal for learning something. This a basic understanding of subjects that is enough for you to organize and plan stuff. For example, I had to manage remote IT workers. The key word here is "manage", which means I don’t need to have an in-depth understanding of their scripts and work flows. I just need to understand how to coordinate them.
- When I understood the concepts, I’d break everything down into multiple components and find connections between each subject. I never studied by subjects. I studied by finding common components and, for example, asking why 1 is chosen out of 2 things with almost identical components. The process of doing this is how I LEARNED because I was constantly challenging myself by making myself question things the example I used.
When I read the Zettelkastern stuff, it made perfect sense and I found a way to organize stuff with an actual system while in the past, the way I did my shit worked but organizing them was a problem since I lacked a real system. It was like playing everything by ear like how you can jam to any blues song when you know and have screwed around with lots of pentatonic scale “snippets”. This shit gives you super powers lol.
For the course I just passed, it added in the aspect of exploratory research now that we have the internet. Fucking increased my productivity 2x. BUT you must have enough self-control to not stray too far from the relevant subjects.
Also, for students, check out something called “Retrospective Revision” and “Active Recall”. You’ll get how everything I’ve written above is connected. While I only used it to drill certain things into my head in the short term for the exam, I’ve not really explored these for other use cases since I’ve got to catch up on my own work and don’t have the time.
P.S: FUCK C++.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, and I’ll say it again.
The most important “subject” to learn is MANAGEMENT. Not a management course lol. I mean figuring out how to manage people. What drives them to work harder? How do you keep a bunch of highly qualified IT nerds’ egos at bay during a project? What makes them tick? What kind of “leadership” do they respond to? Participatory? Autocratic? What kind of positive reinforcement and shit apply to a group you’re working with etc etc etc.
Make it a HABIT to observe how different people respond to different triggers, motivators etc.
Nerds with Egos!
The present day is weird.
Oh man… you have no fucking idea. If you deal with fellows from a developing country in S.E Asia, those who are actually qualified in IT have fucking big egos simply based on the fact that education in general is lacking. And if they get consistent work, they’re earning several times the salaries of the average workers in their countries because the prices they charge are around 70% of those in developed nations on freelance platforms.
Let’s say they get hired less and only get enough work that adds up to 3 hours a day. Mother fuckers charge $30USD an hour. That’s still MORE then the average income of the average lawyer in such countries.
You go to weird platforms like Fivver and you find fucking certified vets(DVMs) from India offering to do “research” for you for $50 bucks, which really means they will do your uni stuff for you lol.
The pay for IT staff where I live is pretty high while the standard of their skills is average.
Which is why:
- I don’t see anyone from here any global freelance platform nor any local freelancer ones.
- I can’t fucking afford to hire a full-time IT team.
Which is also why I hire teams from developing nations since they are more qualified skill-wise since they managed to specialize in IT. I don’t care about their certifications. I look at their portfolios. And here’s something interesting.
One dude I hired to do some research (real research lol) about certain blockchain related stuff fucking gave me amazingly detailed shit wrt to the technical stuff. I DELIBERATELY didn’t engage anyone in IT because I know the technical shit. I hired the dude, whom is fucking great at DESIGN and VIDEO EDITING, because my clients were mostly designers and I needed material from a non-technical perspective to present to them.
Fuck, this dude didn’t just do the stuff from a designer’s perspective. He even threw in fucking pricing, speed, programming languages and shit for creating and minting tokens on different blockchains like, for example, the Solana blockchain and gave me a fucking list of APIs for writing code in different programming languages “just in case” I don’t know Rust (I don’t). Reason being that, at the time, gas prices for ETH for minting and transfers were absurd while Solana cost like a couple of cents lol but I have no idea what it’s like now since the main platforms are doing some interoperability stuff with ETH with some other stuff which have brough prices down considerably.
And he charged me $20USD. I fucking felt so bad I gave him a tip of $50 out of pocket.
However, there are also lots of fucking scammers and dishonest companies on these platforms so if anyone wants to hire people from there, make sure you check out their portfolios AND arrange a meeting first.
Ok, but back to the point in my previous post. The fucker who earns the most is not the most qualified one skill-wise. He is from Europe, has a PHD which gives him more credibility for clients. He does not do any programming. The only programming (DevOps stuff for the IT ppl here) he does is during his free time as a HOBBY. He MANAGES the teams I hire when projects are out of my depth. That’s it.
Amongst several reasons, one big one is anyone who has the skills to do the grunt work for the projects I hire them for can easily tell I’m a noob, which would make them really hard to manage. So this dude manages the team, plans and delegates workflows, does up some stuff for stress testing that I don’t know BALLS about and monitors the work being done.
And here’s a little more for students.
- You need a PORTFOLIO.
- If you also need to know how to MARKET YOURSELF.
If you’re a programmer, your github needs to be filled with lots of stuff. And if you wanna be like the European dude, you need to publish academic shit in places that IT nerds publish such shit which I know balls about.
The main idea is you need to MARKET YOURSELF and HAVE SHIT TO SHOW FOR IT. This fucker gets invited to give speeches in IT conventions or whatever they’re called in Indonesia ffs LMAO. That’s all the way across the globe but the organizers were willing to pay for his plane ticket and pretty good lodging.
PS: If you wanna do DevOps related stuff, MAKE LEARNING DEBUGGING one of your top priorities along with Docker/Kubernetes and Linux. Java is open source, which means anyone can use it. Despite this, Oracle constantly releases updated versions and adds stuff. I’m not sure if there’s a paid version of their IDE since I use VSCode for everything but I do know there’s a free community version that’s more than enough for even start-ups. Actually, I can’t even remember if they have an IDE lol.
The only IDE I’ve been interested in is the Theia one that’s still in beta mode but that’s from Eclipse, which isn’t part of Oracle. That’s because enterprises pay Oracle for the TECHNICAL SUPPORT, not for using Java lol. That’s how they profit.
It has been really cool to see your growth into the IT/Computer stuff! Especially managing all these guys, without having to use cat analogies. Hopefully you’re even more loaded than before.
But do you still watch movies? Dustin Hoffman has been blowing my mind lately.
I confesss I don’t know if I want to antagonize the warm up thread or the workout pace thread with this video
I’ve that C# was intended to be like the Java Killer, but was as effective in that venture as Reebok was in killing Nike.
Did some reading into this and can agree to this statement while knowing only cursory information. It’s certainly something I’d like to get into, but I’ve got a pretty full plate already lol. I’ll put a pin in it for later.
So I tend to gravitate more towards management style stuff anyways, but i’m not sure if I want to deal with that kind of stress to be honest. Will consider it once I get a better feel for how the developer lifestyle is, but I’ve seen the people that climb the management chain - they tend to be the type of person I don’t want to be most of the time.
I’ve also heard it’s a much lower bar for programming and CS knowledge if the management route is chosen, so depending how bad of a programmer I become - I’ll keep it in mind lol.
Thank you for the detailed write-up, your insight is always appreciated.
After the first 5 reps of watching this I am tired….
Tough work as always.
Thanks man…but is it optimal? What about all the gains I am leaving on the table?!
Why did I leave the gains upon the table?
I wanted to!
…I don’t think your trust in my self-righteous suicide…grip
When it comes to training (and I am definitely guilty of this one at times), most people think too much and work too little.
I wasn’t aware this was an either/or situation?
I confess this exhange really happened
Kiddo: “Wow dad, you almost bought every pumpkin pie yogurt they had!”
Me: “I left some behind?!”
Fall is here people!
I confess I am jealous of this because I cannot find any pumpkin yogurt by me at all.
I get a little thrill when I see a video of someone cool wearing the same gym stuff as me.
Honestly, I’ve been into the IT stuff since early 2019 both out of interested and insisting that we include IT in our services since I was watching the trend towards the gig economy. Remember WeWork? The idea was there but they fucked it up. If ppl were gravitating more towards stuff like this, the only way to coordinate workflows would be online. So I’ve gradually picked up this stuff for almost 4 years although the course I just completed nearly killed me. I have amassed fucking 500+ self-written notes in my notebook over 4+ months lol and 30% of them are article length lol.
I have not watched a sincle movie for several months. The last post I made in the movie thread was the last time I watched a movie or TV show.
You wanna hear about my cats?
2 fuckers have been fighting. These idiots had ear infections, which started one fucker spraying and the other fucker to start fighting him. After treatment and spraying stopped, these idiots are still fighting.
So the vet recommended me something called “Relaxivet”, which contains pheromones like Feliway but with some aromatherapy type of smell that supposedly calms cats down.
Now, since I live in a tropical part of the world, my living room is built for maximum ventilation. Which means I have to put 4 instead of 1 for any of those diffusers to work and, if they’re like the Feliway ones, they will last 3 weeks at most because of airflow, science and shit. Which would cost me a fuck load of money if they don’t work.
I know this because I’ve tried them when the fucking government decided that it was a great idea to start doing ROADWORK on the roads in front of my house last year when everyone was working from home and the constant noise everyday was driving everyone crazy. Only one responds. So the vet sold me this shit, which I can also smell cos it has a faint aroma therapy scent but it’s not really noticeable.
3 days later, which was yesterday, I called the vet and said, “WOW! This stuff is really powerful! FUCK YOU!”. (Relax, I’m buddies with this one).
I’m sure anyone who has seen cats get into altercations knows there will be a pretty long wailing contest before shit goes down and half the time nothing really happens.
After using this shit, the 2 fuckers stopped the wailing matches, which would only end up in a fight 1/3 of the time if I’m not there to stop them and since I’m working from home, it’s mostly just the wailing before I break them up. The only fights that occur happen when I’m asleep.
But when on this shit, they just rush at each other right away. At the same fucking frequency of the prior wailing matches.
So I had 2 idiots literally trying to kill each other 3x a day for the last 3 days without even any warning that shit was about to happen. And there is NO WAY you can break up a REAL cat fight without getting injured yourself.
I confess I pondered setting up a cat fighting business where people can bet since this stuff has such an effect on them.
I confess that I completely misread my male cat Derpy’s intentions with the neighbor cat.
He’s a big lovable goofball. My neighbors cat is an adorable little neighborhood cat who likes to sleep on my porch chairs and roll around in the cat nip patch.
So Derpy keeps standing up and meowing while pawing at the window on the door when she’s outside. She sits by the door looking optimistic and friendly. So I let him out to meet her and play like he does with my other cat.
Nope. He went Conan the Destroyer on her. He has never shown even an iota of aggression, but went from Derpy to destroy instantly. Ran her down and was about to sink teeth into her neck when I grabbed him.
Once I grabbed him he stopped though, which I’m glad for. Otherwise I’d have gotten shredded too.
This Relaxivet diffuser is amazing.
Another fucker got into the affray and now 3 idiots are taking turns fighting.
Since cats aren’t pack animals, it never ends. 3 separate individuals taking turns.
Good shit.
