Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

My ex-gf took these types of classes and thought she could take on anyone. She convinced me to take BJJ with her and the first time we rolled my strength beat her technique hands down. These classes give the false impression that a few weeks/months of training is enough to prevent attackers. Nothing against learning martial arts, but don’t think a white belt with a single stripe makes you the baddest person on the street. These martial arts teach you how to fight within the rules of that system, NOT how to survive in a real life-death situation.

Confession: I said I was cutting out my intra workout gummy worms. Instead, I replaced them with fruit snacks. They have vit C so they’re healthy.

I love that this thread is in the off topic section. I feel like I can finally contribute.

I’ve trained Judo on and off for five years. Suffered some pain and learned bits and pieces that I still remember. I’ve sprained my ankles numerous times. Once had a toe-nail ripped clean off cause I was an idiot and didn’t do proper maintenance. Once got some muscle in my ribs ripped and popped when someone vastly more experienced than me at grappling on the ground showed me what real speed and power looks like.

I don’t ever dream of attempting to use whatever I learned in Judo in a real life confrontation if it it ever happened.

Mostly because I’m a small person compared to most of the male population in the U.S.

I would argue that the majority of places that claim to teach self defense are fraudulent businesses. Even many BJJ schools. For sure nearly anyone selling “women’s self defense” is probably full of shit.

Rare is the person who has both the technique mastery and the real-world experience to be what I consider a credible source on defending yourself bare-handed. There’s a lot you can talk about there, but let’s start with a simple test…

Thank you!!! I have never, ever, understood why people run and let themselves get picked off from a safe distance (for the attacker). Finally, someone with the experience to tell me I will be doing the right thing…even if I don’t live to talk about it LOL.

No I agree, I imagine my response would be the same as yours. Just saying that if someone does charge the people running are the likely survivors. I appreciate the original comment was talking about a one on one example.

@thefourthruffian is 100% right about handling an active shooter situation, but understanding why people do what they do is simple - fight or flight reflex. Even knowing that charging a shooter is the right thing to do doesn’t mean that people will do it. The majority of people freeze up or run in a life-or-death situation.

And that includes the people who “know” that they’d hurl themselves in front of gunfire. The only way to know is to have it happen to you. The fact that it’s your instinct to do the right move is a good sign, but you can’t be sure it’s what you’ll do until the shit hits the fan and you can still move in the right direction.

I totally understand where you’re coming from. Long story short -visualization works, and I actually do it for this scenario. (…I know, I know…insert tough internet dude emoji, wink, wink etc)

So do I…especially at church. I try to think about ways to get my family out of harm’s way and then be useful. It’s going to be chaos and there’s really no good solution. I also think about how to go about not getting shot by the good guys when they arrive. More than likely the 911 call is going to say “a man with a gun” and that’s about it. People suck at details on a regular basis; I imagine the details will be zero in that situation.

And visualization works. It’s how we handle a lot of calls. People who freeze are supposedly trying to find a solution in their brain. The whole “life flashing before your eyes” thing has been referred to as the brain looking for a solution to the current problem.

By imagining stupid things like an active shooter at church, I hope to give it a solution. It might be a bad one, but hopefully it’s useful to someone.

No, it is a valuable use of your time, IMO. Just because you can’t be sure of the outcome doesn’t mean preparing for it isn’t smart, haha. It’d be really dumb to just be like “don’t learn anything, just roll the dice!”
