I’ve signed up for a marathon in 12 weeks… and not just any marathon, but a coast trail running marathon with all the climbing and short swims that come with it.

This brings up all sorts of confessions

  • I only signed up because my wife is convinced i couldn’t do it, two of her friends husbands / boyfriends (regular long distance runners) are taking part which is how the topic came up
  • Im more than a little nervous about my ability to complete it
  • I am a hypocrite, who has long held the pursuit of marathons in contempt and declared on multiple occasions that you wouldn’t get me to do one.
  • Im more than a little nervous about how catabolic the next 12 weeks of training are going to be to get my fitness to the point I am able to do this.
  • I’m going to continue with the same weights training as I have been recently, simply with more cardio added on top. I know this is probably a bad idea, but I can’t find a palatable compromise.
  • The farthest I have run in the last 12-odd years is 5k. Before that I think i’d done a 10k and a 10 mile (both singular) run in my teens.

  1. I confess that the “walk back” rests btw my sets of sprints this morning turned into Tnation scrolling :joy::joy: and the sprints were still hard at- shit I’m out of shape :sob:

  2. I had 100g of honeycomb and 40g of dried figs as part of my cheat meal last night… because we ran out of cheese :joy:

Having run two marathons myself, I say this from experience: You, sir, are in for a world of hurt.

I love swim-run events. Biking is my kryptonite. Make sure you’re doing trail runs in prep. I did regular runs leading up to a 10 mile trail run and my knees took about a month to recover. Crippling pain.
