Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

My friend did a physics capstone project on why woks are superior cooking instruments

Something complicated about heat distribution.

Asians understand physics- who would have guessed :joy::joy:

Shit, my wife studied math for her major. Do you have any idea how much shit I have to hear about heat distribution and woks because I sometimes turn the heat too high lol? A little bit of black stuff forms and I have to have a fucking lecture on thermodynamics for half an hour.

The efficiency of those things is mind blowing- understood 0% of the math though :joy:

Same. Goes in one ear, comes out the other for me.

In Yunan, there’s a method of making rice cakes that basically entails beating the shit out of rice with a 200kg log. It usually takes 8 men stepping on the lever for 20 min to do the task. My first thought was ā€œlooks like a strongman implementā€

I wonder if they’ll be offended if I designate them as XX or XY

Just wait until you hurt yourself sleeping.

Speaking of sleeping… I’ve been a stomach sleeper for 15+ years. Can’t go to sleep any other way. I’ve had every symptom of sleep apnea for years. I never sleep good, I’m always tired, sometimes wake up gasping. Thought it was weight, lost weight, no help. Figured it was just luck of the draw. Held out on a sleep study due to needing a CDL for work and it complicating things.
Last year or so it’s been so bad, basically unbearable. I constantly have never ending nightmares where I’m always fighting for my life, very suspenseful and wake up multiple times a night freaking out.

Well, about 3 weeks ago I was laying down going to bed, thinking about everything and got to wondering if the dreams were my body’s way of waking me up because I wasn’t breathing. Played around with truly trying to relax in my normal sleeping position for a bit. Noticed two huge things!

  1. When I’m laying down I’m actually not relaxed, I’m subconsciously tensed up and holding my neck up.
  2. When I finally COMPLETELY relax? I can’t breathe. AT ALL.

Been sleeping wrong for so many years. It’s been a struggle developing a new sleep position. On my back, I can lay there till 3am no matter the sleep drugs/aids i take. On my side I’m able to sleep much better, but as of right now it’s only with the help of sleep aids and extra pillows and usually twice a week I slip onto my stomach and have the dreams and choking happen again.

So far it’s been a life changing event. Just waiting for my body to ā€œadaptā€ to its new normal.

Damn, that sounds miserable.

Would one of those respironics CPAP machines help? My ex had trouble sleeping for a long time, but she got one of these machines and it seems to help a lot

I’m sure it would! But I still couldn’t stomach sleep, and it would complicate my work life due to medical card.

Also, I’m gonna exhaust every option before I turn into darth Vader at 28. I’d even try surgery before the machine.

Where do you live? It’s actually encouraged here for CDL holders to have sleep studies and get treated, my husband finally had one. They can no longer yank your license for noncompliance.

Alabama. They won’t do anything to me, I just have to do a lot of extra port work every year, and do different things. My old boss had it and he always complained about the process. Granted, it’s not that often, but it still like to find a solution that works and doesn’t involve the mask.

Nasal pillows are a good option. It’s hard to decipher with you because your air supply is cut off when you sleep on your stomach. Most people, the airway collapses with the relaxation of neck and jaw muscles while lying on their back. I asphyxiate myself on my stomach too.

I don’t know if this is a confession as I don’t believe I lost any productivity but I had about 6 meetings this week where I had muted myself and turned video off then spent 90%+ of the time kneeding out knots in my forearm.

I was able to do pull ups pretty freely/pain free today so I am happy

I got diagnosed with sleep apnea years ago. Finally went to the doctor after I was so tired I fell asleep driving on a bridge 200 ft above the Missouri River. Thankfully the rumble strip woke me up and I almost had a heart attack.

Makes a huge difference in sleeping with the CPAP. I highly recommend it. Extra paperwork is a small price to pay.

Dude! You should lay on your back, feet up on the wall, knees bent to 90 degrees, and work on breathing into your diaphragm for awhile. It sounds crazy, but maybe it could help you.

What will that help with?

There are some bros who pay a lot of attention to breathing and posture. These guys say that if you are in ā€œAction Modeā€ or in fight or flight state, your body will get into an extended, ā€œchest up,ā€ or arch backed position. (Or bike-riding body alignment) Supposedly this posture makes you take short, shallow breaths.

The posture guys say that this also works ā€œbackwards.ā€ If you are stuck in this extended, arch-backed, chest high posture, your body will stay in ā€œFight or Flightā€ mode. You’ll always take short, shallow breathes, and always be on edge, anxious and unable to rest.

They specifically talked about tight neck muscles, just like you mentioned. And in general they are always talking about shoulder and low back related issues, like you are always mentioning.

The basic move these posture guys use to fix these issues is inhaling/exhaling in the 90/90 hip lift position.

What if you used two king size pillows positioned into a ā€œVā€? I’m a former stomach sleeper, but a shoulder issue got in the way, and now I flip back and forth between the two pillows. So the turning of my neck is reduced, and my upper body rests on whichever pillow I’m facing. I don’t know if that makes sense. But I’m at a tilt rather than flat.
