Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

We’d end up talking semantics even if we didnt… IF this wasnt the flame free thread.

Nevermind, mine was a silly joke about the fact that in the semantics thread, you guys ended up talking about nurse income.

So if we start talking about nurse income, we’ll end up talking about semantics lol

I hate that kinda argument but… If he complained about lack of access to beef (didn’t read the thread), has anyone reminded him of the existence of pro vegetarian and vegan bodybuilders?

It’s not like no meat is a death sentence…

The wife has been going to cardio kickboxing classes for some time. Now she tells me she joined a Women’s Self Defense class in the gym. Then she tells me they taught her how to disable someone attacking you with a knife. I’m trying to get her to stop going.

You don’t fucking disable someone when he attacks you with a knife and is determined to use it. You fucking RUN. That’s it. Real life is not like the movies. I wouldn’t even take on a crazy 110lb woman holding a knife. These instructors are going to get someone killed.

Attack her with a knife just to prove a point.

I get where you’re coming from, but you also have to consider that this isn’t always an option

If running isn’t an option, then you will have a better chance not using any disabling technique taught by these instructors. A normal person’s instinct is to evade the attacker, not engage.

I’m no martial arts practitioner of any sort. I see where you’re coming from, but I also see an argument for learning a few skills. Let’s just agree to disagree, and hope we or our loved ones never be in a situation where you either need to use those said skills or run in any circumstance.

Very sound advice

I can definitely see how false confidence from learning theoretical techniques, practiced in controlled and often slow motion settings, could result in worsening an outcome.

I’m not saying it’s not good to learn new skills. I’m saying you can’t use these skills in real life situations. If someone uses a knife on you and you try using one of these disabling tricks, not only do they not work, after one failed attempt to disable the person, you’ve set yourself up for multiple consecutive stabs at close range before you have time to react. A normal person will at least try to evade the attack from the start even in an enclosed area until they find a way to escape or help arrives.

I’d hope that these instructors are at least prefacing these demonstrations with an insistence that de-escalation should always be the goal, not engagement.

They’re instructors in a commercial gym lol. What do you think?

If I didn’t already feel like a moron. I do now! As I mentioned before I thought my son was tapped by a professor to be nothing more then a tutor for a class. I was wrong I guess after getting conformation from my son. He will be activity participating in instructing the class.

Lol. I was thinking legit Krav Maga people or legit BJJ stuff.

And yes, I sincerely agree with you on that.

Any plans on making it up to him?

Nothing to make up. I feel like a idiot because his formal education makes me look like a drooling buffoon.
