Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

Meh - deadlift is fine. You just drop the bar. It’s the 20kg misloaded squat where you fall over in the rack. That’s a great look.

I confess I don’t think I’m going to manage to keep training during UK Lockdown 2.0.

I did really well in the first lockdown, mainly due to it being in summer. I have a power tower and some dumbbells and training outside was great! But walking to the gym in 1 degree weather this morning convinced me that I’m not going to be training outside again much before March.

I’ve “invested” in a cheap-ass stationary bike so I’ll try to get in a bit of cardio, but this is a depressing and demotivating moment…

I do this all the time for squat and bench (when I did use those :joy:). Front squat is the worst though, that’s the only time I almost lost the bar.

Time to bust out the P90X

What’s P90X??

It’s a bodyweight only training DVD from the 90s(?).

All the hallmarks of late night TV infomercials.

There is no doubt that P90X works and is an incredibly challenging program! Was my first program ever getting into resistance training and provided a fantastic foundation of strength prior to getting into the gym. We whipped out the old P90X DVD’s and equipment for a few months earlier in the year when shelter in place orders were issued, and holy crap I forgot how hard those workouts were. Strength went up and I lost a few pounds just from doing the workouts without changing anything else. It is majority bodyweight, but there are exercises where dumbbells are utilized (or resistance bands but bands definitely won’t provide the same results), I did purchase the adjustable dumbbells and utilized them throughout the program. Lots of people poke fun, but anyone who goes through the program properly and can actually do all of the workouts for 90 days will have some fantastic results.

I confess that, as a Canadian with zero vested interesting in the election south of me, seeing all the anxiety and fear surrounding it makes me very sad.

If any of my brothers and sisters in iron from the States need and impartial ear, I’m here for you :+1:t2:

I got bored during Econ class so I decided to scroll through the new sub-forum
… On the one hand, it gives me hope about being able to get a doctorate, on the other, it seriously makes me question academia as an institution :joy:

I’ve been told that the backstabbing in academia trumps (pun intended, of course) even politics.

I hereby officially give you permission to use a stereotypical Chinese accent when doing your HON-AH, DIS-HON-AH schtick.

Stereotypes exist for a reason

Which one? The HK one that Russell Peters uses when telling jokes about Chinese people or the South Park one? Both are extremely accurate lol.

I gotta say those South Park dudes are really good at this shit. The dodgeball episode even had a banner with Chinese “calligraphy” that actually said “FUCK(他妈的)” lol and in the Russell Crowe episode, Trey spoke some broken Mandarin BUT with the correct pronunciation and inflections. And the dude’s Japanese is actually pretty good.

my favourite Chinese insult is the phrase for Bastard 王八蛋 .
IDK where it comes from, but it’s a homophone for turtle egg, which are ironically a prized (and I believe illegal) delicacy

This one for me. “Be a man!”

I confess I’ve only seen tiny parts of South Park from when other people have it on TV.

I like that one word only people in China use that’s supposed to an insult but it sounds so cute instead (傻逼 shabi). I don’t even know what it really means since literally it translates to something like “dumbass” but it’s used like some kind of grave insult.

I normally curse in the Fujian dialect and it’s always either “fuck one’s mother” or something about one’s mother’s genitalia being rancid.

The thing is… he’s actually right. That’s what an older guy selling stuff at a night market would say in Chinese if you were being wishy washy about your purchase but it’d be a longer and more complex phrase which would go something like, “Man up! Let’s speak man to man. You tell me if you want that shit or not and I’ll give you a discount while making a loss!” lol.

There’s a curse in spanish “Me caga en el leche de su mama”, which roughly tranlates to “I shit on your mother’s milk”
Very popular phrase in “The Sun Also Rises”

The non-vulgar Chinese ones with passive aggressive implications crack me up too. When my friends lose money at mahjong, they yell, “Here, go see a doctor!”, implying that you need the money more than him cos you’re are going to die from disease soon, while handing you money.

I think it was the Cantonese dudes like @punnyguy 's ancestors who started this.
