OK, this being the flame free thread, I’m just going to scroll right on past this with no further comment.

Flame Free - the kale was bad to begin with, regardless of freshness

I didn’t know Lidl was in the UK, lol.
Here in Virginia, we have Lidl, Aldi, Food Lion, Kroger, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Wegman’s, Publix, Martin’s, etc. Bit of overkill, haha.

Oooooooh, don’t know if I can let that one go. haha

Flame free: My wife makes massaged kale with this really good vinaigrette dressing and you pretty much barely know you’re eating rabbit food.

I’m enjoying the imagery of “massaged kale”.

It’s every bit as sensual as you’re envisioning, trust me.

I genuinely believe Kale is a made up food and should be left in a hedgerow

I legit want to include canned spinach back in my diet purely because of this

Popeye was one of my earlier influences as far as wanting to get big and strong.

I confess that I was WAYY too excited when Giant Eagle had a discount on canned veggies

Man, when I was a kid I was convinced that a can of spinach would do for me what it did for Popeye, so I harrassed my mother until she finally allowed me to eat a can of spinach all to myself. Needless to say, at least back then, canned spinach is an abomination that should not be allowed to exist. It is like the Dark Matter of canned food products. She basically forced me to sit there for an hour gagging down limp, sour pieces of spinach.

Took me a while to get over that. Fresh spinach is quite okay.

I had the EXACT same experience, haha. Go spinach brothers.

And sisters! My brother beat me up a lot and I thought spinach would help, so I too asked and was granted the privilege of eating (what I could of, which wasn’t much) a can of spinach.

It reminds me of the muck plants turn into if you leave them out in a hard freeze.

I’ll happily suggest the free version of the Down Dog app then. I haven’t found a YouTube-channel of equal quality.

My mom would make instant mashed potatoes with a bit of canned spinach in them. It was a sneaky way to make us eat green vegetables. Worked, too. Also basically free way to serve a giant family.

Recipe:

instant mashed potatoes. Follow instructions, but substitute 1/2 of whatever water called for with milk. (So, if if it called for 2 cups water and 2 cups milk, its 1 cup water and 3 cups milk)

Add extra butter

Add canned potatoes, barely mashed, to fake real potatoes

Add chopped green onion
Add Hatch green chiles (or jalapenos)

Add either about a 1/2 can of spinach or, alternatively, green cabbage.

Salt, pepper, maybe cumin

Bring to a boil, simmer, then fold in the instant potatoes.

Let rest.

Shredded gubmint cheese they pass out at the Reservation on top.

It’s quite good.

No judgment, again.

Not a flame, just a question. Why would you not make mashed potatoes from regular potatoes? I grew up in a huge family and that was a standard cheap filler food for us, potatoes. I never understood the instant or canned potatoes, so I’m asking.

In certain places and stores, the cost-effectiveness isn’t much different between the two, and busy families save quite a bit of time with instant taters. Not sure of health/nutrition implications, but it’s what some people do.

I was raised by parents that averaged 60 hour weeks and they were willing to make the tradeoff to instant taters for time savings and just have “real” mashed potatoes on special occasions.

I don’t eat many potatoes because I find them a pain in the ass to prepare. I’ve never had instant/canned potato but that would be the appeal… Also, are potatoes seasonal?

If you grow them yourself, but they are in grocery store year-round and have a very long shelf life.

This. Honestly, I can’t deal with lengthy food prep, especially after a full day of work. It’s actually a godsend that my son can live on nothing but cheese sticks and gogurts -lol.
