Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

Surely you are joking?

Fell for this too 5 years ago during another fat loss phase. For me, it was a slice of pizza at lunch. Figured everything else was on point and I could budget that in.

I was wrong. Have to be all in, all the time.

Although these days, 600 calories is 2 meals for me, so it will definitely break a diet, haha.

This. I think most people just aren’t going to be this committed to the process.

Came across something that hoisted a red flag for myself. Came across a guy asking lifting advice on here but yet claims he trains with someone who could be consider a lifting legend.

Sub forum?

Doesn’t matter now since the guy … hasn’t been on here in 2 months. Just wanted to throw it out there. I just find it off that he supposedly train with a 8 time world champion and is asking advice on a forum.

Sorta like say your training at Westside under Louie and doing the same in my view point.

@bulldog9899 you’ll appreciate this: I brought a few books with me to read today. One is ā€œPractical Programming for Strength Trainingā€, 2nd edition, written co-written by Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore with aid of Glenn Pendlay (RIP) as well. The other book is ā€œMean Ol Mr Gravityā€, which is literally just re-prints of forum posts on the starting strength site vaguely organized.

The nutrition advice in practical programming?

ā€œTo get stronger and more fit we need to consume somewhere around 200 to 400 calories more energy than we expend. This is a relatively small caloric excess, and much more than this should be avoided, since a huge caloric surplus can and will eb stored as fatā€-pg 51

From ā€œMr Gravityā€

Spur: ā€œRip, How much milk should a boy, 12 years and 7 months old drink? He weighs 68 kilos, 5 feet 6 inches tall, and is on your novice program for the last few monthsā€

Rip ā€œI’d have a 150lb kid drinking the whole gallon (of milk a day), if he wants to get Huge and Powerful.ā€-pg 153

Both books published by Mark’s company (ā€œThe Aasgaard Companyā€) within 2 years of each other.

And MEANWHILE, if you go look for the latest version of the book, look who is the co-author

I have a feeling I know who wrote the good parts of the second edition…

Indeed - they tried. I’m not 100% sure it was ratified. But it was close enough for me to latch onto it as a health food!

Look how complex training is supposed to get by year 3-4.

I bet THAT’s the year you get to do something other than sets of 5.

I once witnessed a wedding reception while ā€œdiningā€ at a Golden Corral in Carbondale, IL (which may as well be Kentucky). I don’t think anyone in the wedding party was under 275

Yeah… I have a copy of one of the editions on kindle havent read it for awhile. Matter of fact I only skimmed read it once.

Yeah … that doesnt actually sound like Rips normal gallon of milk stance. I would say that might have came from Mr Baker.

The Milk thing of a gallon isnt a bad suggest for under weight teen boys going through puberty who may be in athletics. It is after all a old school method…

While the lower is caloric intake I would say is more reasonable for someone who is starting out who might also be more mature. I know Mike Mentzer felt 500 extra cals were sufficient
for the job. Of course thats going to vary on several factors as you know.

Hopefully , that isnt the extent they go into the nutritional aspect in the 3rd edition. Because even a guy like me who embraces simplicity in training. I even find that really fucking lacking and lazy if they didnt go into more details.

I imagine Lon. Baker wasn’t a co-author for the second edition.

They cover much more about nutriton: I just wanted to share a point of blatant discrepancy that Rip saw zero issues attaching his name and brand to.

Sorry my bad…been a long day.

But yeah… you would think if you put your name on something you might want to make sure it represents your own stance. Maybe mark was hitting the whiskey that day.

Andy is knowledgeable, open minded and very reasonable. I’d say this is a safe bet… lol

I had a brain fart as pointed out.

I was too quick on the trigger but still worth noting that Andy isn’t a zealot and worth reading. Also does Strongman, so you know he’s a good guy.

Yeah i like some of his stuff…he definitely not a zelot.

I confess I’ve periodically checked up on the Eddie Hall vs Thor boxing fiasco. I know it’s mostly bullshit, but I was just curious to see if either of them would take it seriously.

Eddie just annoys me in general, so I’m not a fanboy of his, but his progress is phenomenal. Crisp jab, good footwork, good head movement, and a daily routine that mirrors what pro’s would do.
Thor is embarrassingly bad and slow. And not just because he’s a giant - because he’s surrounded by yes men. He just talks and talks about how it doesn’t matter who it is and he can knock anyone out, and it doesn’t look like there’s a single person around him willing to challenge him at the moment.

Thank god this is FF because I’m aware how ridiculous this whole thing is, I’m just a big boxing fan and I’m actually quite impressed with Eddie’s progress.
