Like I mentioned allot the comparison always gravitate during prep period phases . Here’s just two examples and I could easily point out more.
All bodybuilders are weak… thats a bad generalized. Pretty unfair to judge guys when they are half starved and underfed that are balls deep into contest prep.
Rep ranges in powerlifting. Oh they all keep their reps under 5. Again using meet peaking as a small snap shot.
I confess I got caught up in this way of thinking myself, kinda bouncing between two extremes “styles” of training and neglecting everything in the middle.
This year I’ve been having more success (and fun) using some Free Hatfield/Lee Haney schemes from the 80’s. More rep ranges with different weights and more variety week to week. Stimulate don’t annihilate!
The extremes of training ideals put me off weights for YEARS.
In my home town there was a famous (locally) gym. It was a body building gym. That was ALL they done. I turned up at 21 years old wanting to get stronger. I was a rugby player and was interested in strength only. They guy told me he couldn’t help me. I look that at that man with genuine venom. His gym was a production line of body builders and he couldn’t even point me in the direction of strength programme. They guy is an arse.
It put me off training in general. I finally found Strong Lifts a few years later and then T Nation.
Confession (unrelated):
The gym I use runs a strong man training club. Some of the guys there are on - or have been on PEDS. I know this and I’m not too fussed. Until one of the guys that is kinda my level in terms of strength starts talking about his anti e meds. And I got a bit of mood on. And I realised that my attitude to PEDs is directly proportional to the effect it has on my placement.
For example - the guy thats been lifting 10 years and has a 350kg dead lift used 2 grams a week. Fine, its his life.
The guy that pips me to the max dead lift by 5kg is mid way through a 300mg/w cycle…? Arse hole!
Yeah its not even like I care too much. The sport I compete in is full of guys who get help. It’s okay. Im more upset at me. Peds are wrong or right. It shouldn’t be “they are okay. Until it affects my finishing place.”
I competed clean in Strongman. I can count on a couple of fingers the other guys that were not using. The beauty of Strongman is the field is fairer than any other sport, because there is no testing. Nobody using PEDS is cheating, and it’s no secret that most are on. It’s one of the things I love about it - anyone can do whatever they want and that’s a personal decision. (Except in the upper pro contests like WSM, where they test for certain stimulants like cocaine). I lost all the time to guys doing large cycles - and had peace because it was my decision to not use and no one is cheating.
Funny thing is the guys I used to powerlift with who talked shot about nattys all have sexual performance/ED issues now. (No I didn’t sleep with them to find out).
