Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

My wife bought our 4 and 8 year old weighted blankets (5 & 7lbs respectively). I admit I enjoy asking them to put them away because they struggle to pick them up and drag them to their bedroom.

We agree on the important points.

Like I said- hating on Pierce is controversial. Especially because he’s a good actor and was in good bond movies. He was just written as a weak Bond.

I have to admit (edit:confess lol) I haven’t really watched all the Pierce bond movies, because I thought he was poorly cast. The parts of his bond movies I’ve seen while randomly watching TV has seemed pretty decent.

But every time I’ve come across an old Roger Moore one on TV, I always cringe after a few minutes, shake my head, mutter wtf, and change channels.

I watched all the Moore ones when they first came out because I loved Moore as The Saint on the old TV series.

Confession: I have watched one Bond movie in my life.

I grew up on Roger Moore as Bond and really enjoyed Brosnan as Remington Steele so I was happy when he was cast as Bond. But both of them were a bit too pretty and if I’m being honest, Craig’s bond may be superior to Connery’s. They both have a grit to them that Brosnan and Moore never had.

Timothy Dalton was good in both Living Daylights and License to Kill. ā€œOn Her Majesty’s Secret Serviceā€ is my favorite Bond movie even if Lazenby is given short-shrift. Bond finds himself falling in love with (and married to!) Diana Rigg and the ending is truly a shock. Telly Savalas and his evil lair served as the model of the evil kingpin for decades to come.

I confess that, for the past several weeks, I have been craving a Bacon King from Burger King.

The confession is multiple parts there, because along with the craving being a thing, BK is…is just not good. It’s such a terrible thing to crave.

I grew up in San Diego, so I get to be a snob about fast food cheeseburgers and talk up In n Out and then deal with people who say it’s not great, but among the main burger chains I still put BK pretty low tier. It always seemed like McDonald’s annoying kid brother going ā€œme too!ā€ with every menu item.

Another San Diego delight is Jack n The Box, which doesn’t really make great burgers, but has a lot of outstanding stuff on the menu in general. The 2 tacos are a classic, and they do a spicy chicken sandwich that I will say beats out Chik Fil A, JUST to upset the latter’s fans.

This night shift is forcing me to think about weird things just to stay awake…

I confess I find daydreaming about food to be the most normal thing I’ve ever seen you do.

I think the effects of quarantine are showing. Typically, by now, I’ve made the pilgrimage back to the holy land of San Diego and filled up on local food enough to be held over. The Mrs is in a similar way hurting in her lack off Hawaiian BBQ. We’re finding methadone like fixes, but it’s never the same.

I have a 15 pound blanket, I think, and never use it because it’s such a misery to deal with afterward. I feel like I can do baton tricks with 15 lb dumbbells, but this blanket just oozes around trying to escape being folded. I haven’t even tried it on my bed because I picture deciding I hate it in the middle of the night, then having to first escape it, then replace the regular bedding.

We’re getting a new couch, though, with a storage ottoman, so I’ll be able to just pour it into there after watching tv with it.

I will say, he was well-written in Goldeneye before they toned it down and made him prettyboy Bond. I liked the Dalton movies and Goldeneye was written for him, but Brosnan took over and they didn’t de-grit it. Had they stuck with that formula I think Brosnan would have been a much better Bond.

Anyway, I’ve always struggled with Daniel Craig as Bond. I liked the cheesy-ass movies that made me feel like I’d time-traveled, so the level of real that Craig’s movies are takes away from that experience for me. Connery was just awesome, Lazenby was awkward but good, and I’ll break from consensus and say I liked Moore’s Bond outside of Octopussy. Tim Dalton is largely forgotten and I think it’s unwarranted because he spun the portrayal of the character a little darker.

He was brilliant in Layer Cake. I loved those gritty British crime movies from around that time, like Snatch - actually most Jason Statham films. Good escapism!

George Lazenby embodied ā€œjust a guyā€ imo, but Diana Rigg…!!!

Was so great to see her still kicking it when she appeared in Game of Thrones.

Totally forgot about Dalton. Dalton has the dark aspect, but not the flair. Yes, Brosnan with a gritty script would’ve nailed it; plus a few ā€œquickā€ pounds of muscle a la Daniel Craig -wink, wink. I think Brosnan gets underrated/overlooked all the time because of his looks. Oh, to have his problems…LOL.

I think this post just enlightened me a bit about why my brother loved living in San Diego, but would never actually say why.

I’m going to have to grill him on this a little next time we talk.

Ask about Carne asada fries, a San Diego style burrito and Rubios while you are at it, haha.
