I’d say you pegged it right. This isn’t necessarily advice that would resonate with everyone, but it’s pretty applicable to a lot of people, and it also lines up with what Jim says in BTM, what Jon says in Deep Water, and what in general, a lot of big strong guys say about being big and strong.
I used to be a coach Rip devotee. Until some of what he said just didn’t make sense. And then his narrow vision got weird.
I mean I’m not gonna attack the guy. Mainly because I still like most of what he says about the fundamentals of training.
Other bits are just odd.
But on the subject of training newbies- starting strength is a great programme. For a while.
Mark is an enjoyable writer, and inside of his wheelhouse he communicates a great message. His issue has always been his willingness to operate WELL outside of that wheelhouse and attempt to apply his hammer of a solution to every nail of a problem he sees.
The takeaway people tend to get confused about is that when someone writes the most popular beginner training book of the forever, that speaks to their ability as an author (and publisher/promoter), rather than as a coach.
If I was a 15 y/o high school football player, I’d take his advice. Lift heavy and eat a lot.
I realized I’d been severely under estimating the calories in my grill nights ![]()
I’d been tracking a half rack of ribs as 600calories… turns out, Costco racks are twice the size of a normal rack(4lbs vs 2lbs), so my “600 calories of ribs” is more like 1200 ![]()
The problem is that I’m not satisfied with anything less than half a rack ![]()

All of your ‘confessions’ surround eating more food than you should be, but I’m curious, how has your weight changed?
Last time I weighed myself, I was 92.5lbs, so looks like those grill nights have made a difference. On the bright side, I still look pretty good. I’m taking a pic tomorrow for a checkin
It’s 6 hours past training and I can’t really bend my arms or my brachialis and biceps cramp up. Curse you John Meadows
Try waking up needing to use the restroom and getting a calf cramp followed by a quad cramp in both legs ![]()
Dear God I never had a quad cramp
let’s just say it’s not pleasant…
Tommy Topper here. Simultaneous cramps in both quads and hamstrings is my winner.
I used to get those every spring, my first day back to climbing/cutting trees.
I’d pretty much just go home and writhe like a sprayed bug for the first week or so.
Now that’s something I never want to go through ![]()
Since I tore mine and it isn’t fully connected, certain positions make it cramp like a mofo… if you know what I mean.
I am King of the Quad Cramps. It’s probably because I spend way too long sitting down after hitting legs and then stand up super fast and end up dropping to the floor because my quads look like there’s an alien swimming underneath the skin.
I, too, like to complain every week about the fact that I get to overindulge on meat.
Flame free, bitches.
It’s nice to know I’m not alone ![]()
And here I am, alone. No ribs.
