you might try putting him in a smith machine that way he can use the bar for balance and keep his back straight because he looks like if he straightened his back he would fall over backward; the smith would not allow this; it also allows someone to stretch into a squat position if flexibility is an issue… must say if he squats like this… it just looks painful…

This is a great video with lots of cues. The first 10 minutes should give you lots of help. Like other people have said it’s a matter of sitting down, and having the guy’s hands in the pictured position is sort of awkward without a bar.
I 2x this. I used this video to get more flexible in the bottom position.
Do lots of Front Squats (preferably with a clean grip, as that places the bar where it should be; the shoulders + clavicles). Also do Front Squats with a 2second pause at the bottom, then come up.
Then, have him do Overhead Squats with a PVC or empty bar for reps. This really forces the body to get into a good position (since any misalignment makes u drop the bar)
-PLUS OH Squat will show YOU where he is tight so u can have him strech those areas (as suggested by another poster).
Remember to have him squat with flat sole shoes (nike frees or Chuck Taylor’s All Stars) if he doesn’t have any tell him to squat with sox only.
GIVE THIS TIME!
-Getting flexible does not happen in a week, he has to stay consistent with it for months.
-Also tell him to do overhead squats at home with a broom stick. And goblet squat with whatever he has.
Note: If ur trying to have him do an Olympic Back Squat (- YouTube) all the above applies. BUT NOT the “low bar”, “knees should not pass the toes” and “wide stance” stuff.
the wall Squat as seen the youtube video is what I use to teach others to squat properly. It prevents you from leaning too far forward by banging your head on the wall if you do.
Jeez everybody! Thanks so much for all of this. I’ll give all of this a try. All of this great stuff in only 24 hours… wow.
The only tips I probably won’t take on will be squatting in a Smith Machine and squatting with plates under the heels. I think that neither of these focus on fixing the problem and will not get them squatting without these crutches. Still, thanks for trying to help and if I’m wrong about this can you explain why? I’m always really keen to learn.
Thanks again everybody. I’ve been reading the T-Nation articles for a while but for some (stupid) reason, never came into the forums.

Only reason for plates would be to have him squatting atg right now while you work on his problems, so he can get the benefit of a full squat rather then partial squat. Also sitting in those positions even with plate will improve flexibility a bit. But yes avoid he smith machine squat
