First Meet Preparation

  • Racks weight WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RIC FLAIR!

In regard to the competition, your attitude and drive is awesome, and I hope you make a ton of great progress, but part of winning is knowing your competition. As some guys said, deadlift will be a 400min for 240lb guy. A true bodybuilder should have know problem hitting depth at 350. Depth won’t be the issue. Does he have a big ass (no homo) that will tell you right out if he does a lot of hip and glute activating work.

This guy has a huge rear end (no homo). It looks like he cant find pants to fit. If I look at just his body, I eat lunch with him every day, I think to myself “I might have bitten off a little too much here.” Then when he starts talking I feel much better.

Cons for Me

  • This guy weighs a lot more, has less body fat, seems to have muscles on his muscles, and has been training for 10 years
-I have seen him bench with dumbbells and it was a lot of weight
  • I have never seen him barbell bench, squat or deadlift

Pros for me

  • This guy is not real bright
  • He knows nothing about powerlifting, rules, picking attempts, etc.
  • He does not train for powerlifting. (I am doing 3/5/1 with heavy singles) He is doing “back and bi’s” “chest and tri’s”
  • He has a different back injury every day. Today he told me he was doing reverse fly’s 4 days ago and his shoulder blades hurt a lot still
  • This guy walks around with lifting straps on bench day. How is he going to have the grip strength to deadlift 400 pounds?

Who knows what is going to happen. I dont think he has ever maxed out on strict bench, squat, deadlift in his life. How in the world is he going to pick attempts? If he picks attempts how will he know that he can hit his last attempt and it is his max effort? I think he will either pick way too heavy weights or hit numbers not at his absolute max. I will not be leaving any weight on the table.

If he was smart and started powerlifting training right now . . . I would be toast. Instead he is giving the calf raise machine hell.

here are my sumo deads. I was able to hit my first week numbers. The new form is different but I like the challenge. Even if during these 6 months I do not gain as much on my sumo as conventional, I think this is the best form for my back health and future gains.

Thanks to all the help and advice. I am taking the advice and running with it.

Sumo always feels good at first i just started trying it too. But for me it really messes with my squat. I think i pulled something in my leg from sumos. Just remember to ease into sumo. I went from trying them at 315 one week then to 405 the next week then to 475x3 the next week. I jumed into them too hard and too fast. Just be careful with them. They are alot more technical of a lift than conventional.

Also do a few practice meets with a ref or a friend who has competed in powerlifting. Dont max out on these attempts but hit around 95% on them.

Heres a few things i messed up on in my first meet.

Bench opener- 320 bad lift head came off the bench didnt know it wasnt allowed. 2nd attempt 320 good this time. 3rd attempt 355 got the lift and got so excited and just racked it forgot rack command so failed lift.

Squat 405 opener good
Squat 2nd attemt 455 good
3rd attempt 495 i went down before the command got the lift but considered a failed attempt.

Deadlift
Opener 485 good

2nd attempt 545 lift went good locked it out but sat it down before the judge put his arm down.

3rd attempt 545 again good lift.

So i was nervous and didnt know the rules completely and i missed the rules briefing… (dont do that). So just remember to stay on track and do a few practice meets with a ref or pl friend it will really help you get the feel of things and give you that much more of an edge over your opponent. Good luck! Kick his strap wearing calf raising mirror flexing ass!

I benched yesterday, made all my lifts and hit a couple of heavy singles. I am going to lift weights and increase the volume a little bit during these first four months. I have started stretching my hips and groin daily to get into a better sumo deadlift position.

Really nice mock meet

Today I showed my nemesis a video of Dan Green getting a 2210 total. When he saw the video of the bench press he told me “In our competition in May do I have to touch the bar to my chest like that guy?” He was dead serious. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How else do you bench press? I think all he does is really heavy dumbbells.

training is going really great! My elbow is feeling great and I am training 4 times a week. My conditioning is non existent. My brother is letting me borrow his bands to do some dynamic speed work and overload training. Does anyone here use this that competes raw? I am eating more than I have ever eaten and it is helping more than anything I have ever done. I was under eating before and I will never let that happen again. My nemesis told me today that he is going to take the rest of the year off and starting Jan 1st he is going to get ready for this meet. I am training extra hard every day he is not. I will beat this guy.

That was a mistake. Unless you want to turn it into a really fair contest with both of you coming in at your best.

lloll, this guy is a dumb ass probably will back out of the contest. you are already stronger than him, he’s in weakling diva denial.

I am with you Jlabs. Today he told me he is going to get up to 265 for a bodybuilding show in April or May. I dont think that will help his pound for pound total for our powerlifting meet. He thinks he has already won so he is not to focused on me. On my side of the fence I am lifting, eating, stretching, sleeping like a animal. Today he said he tried to deadlift 100 pounds yesterday and it hurt his back too much to continue.

I think this guy is lying to me and I am not falling for it. I am lifting like he is a 400 bench, 450 squat, 500 deadlift and my life depends on getting close to those numbers (weight adjusted).

When I first proposed the meet he wanted the events to be bench, incline bench, and dumbbell shoulder press. This guy is going down. I have lifted outside (20 - 30 degree weather) for 4 out of the last 5 days. today I am going to stretch, roll, cook, eat, sleep. Tomorrow is squat day. Thanks for all the support.

Well there is not much new news. It turns out if you want to increase your totals you need to get stronger. If you want to get stronger you have to lift heavy weight, sleep, eat, stretch, repeat. When I hit a new PR or something cool happens I will post a video. I have come to realize that getting strong involves grinding out workouts when you don’t feel like it and taking care of business on off days, cooking eggs and chicken, eating when you dont feel like it, going to bed early instead of reading t nation all night. This is a great site but no ones tips are going to make me strong I have to get it done.

well just like some of yall predicted my nemesis is trying to weasel out of the competition. I am still lifting, eating, cooking, sleeping, stretching like my life depends on it. The weasel is saying that he cant deadlift because it hurts his back too much. I got a three day pass to 24 hour fitness because I am freezing in my outdoor gym. 24 hour fitness is about 99% a joke. Most of the people there are not lifting, they are just playing on their phone.

The octagon weights are terrible for deadlifting. I was deadlifting 305 on my last set which is baby weight and everyone around me was like “how can you do that?” this is a weird world. My goal is to be strong at a hardcore gym not a commercial gym. I am gaining weight like never before. When I started this journey 2 years ago I was 5’10’’ 165 pounds. Yesterday I came in at 207 pounds. I like being solid and am not sure I want to cut a lot of weight.

Awesome stuff! Keep your joints and back healthy!

That’s a HUGE step in your favour. Getting down to the low BF required for such a close show will mean he will be at his weakest at the meet. Stupidly confident on his part.

He’s definitely fucking with you about the deadlift. Even the scrawniest newb can deadlift 100lbs. This guy sounds like one of the biggest guys at my gym (though he’s not an asshole): about the same size, doesn’t squat, doesn’t deadlift, only does DB (not BB) benching. He doesn’t train for competition, so doesn’t do much lower body work.

Despite deadlifting something on the scale of once or twice a year, he told me that he tried maxing recently and managed 4 plates. I have no doubt that he could bring that number up quite a bit in a very short time if he actually bothered trying. Since your nemesis a competitive BBer, he probably still does a reasonable amount of lower body training of some form, so will probably be better at it than this guy, back permitting. So this will hopefully give you some idea of what you’re up against.

This thread is gold. Every hero needs a nemesis.

are you both registered for the powerlifting meet?

Final results, the meet happened in May and the guy beat me by 5 pounds overall. I weighed in at 205 he weighed in at 240. I won pound for pound and deadlift. He won the squat and bench. He is not very strong and he told me he would never do this again. He was trying to show off on squat and hurt his back for about 2 months. I have used it as motivation to get really really strong. I have joined a weightlifting group of o lifters and power lifters. Having a strong network of people makes training much better for me. I know I will get to a 1500 total in no time

Very rad. What did you each total?

Ya, you gotta give more info. I just came across this thread and it is an epic competition. Give us all lifts, misses, close calls, bull shit calls, etc.

I’d love to see the face on the meathead when you deadlifted more than he did, or squatted equal, woulda been priceless.

Did he walk around with his straps the next day or be a little bitch and wine about his back to get sympathy?
