Any advice for my first meet? I’m competing in a “%100 RAW” federation meet. Any of you have experience with this particular fed?
its the only fed i’ve competed in. they are strict. open light - smoke the opener. then try and hit your goal.
Open light, make sure you hit depth on the squat, and wait for commands on the bench. Bring plenty of food and drink with you, it can be a long day. Read their equipment rules as well. Good luck and have fun.
Also, if you are competing in a “regional” do you have to be from that area? The reason I say this is that I wanted a meet that had day before weigh ins, and a higher saction. I would like to attempt to break the world record that is listed on powerliftingwatch.
Depending on the organization, world records have to be broken at certain venues. Why do you have to have a day before weigh-in? Are you planning a drastic water cut? What record are you going for?
100% RAW is state (sanction 1), national (sanction 2) and world records (sanction 3). If you break a world record in a state or national meet, it will not count as a world record w/o judges qualified to judge world record attempts. When you break a state record, it only counts for the state you’re from if you compete in a different state than where you live. 100% RAW has 24hr weigh ins.
They do not allow knee sleeves or knee wraps. Feet must be flat on the floor when benching and head on the bench. There is no start command for the bench, only press and rack commands. Squat is squat and rack commands. Deadlift is a down command after a successful pull. No drugs at all. They will test 10% of lifters minimum and if you break a record, bet on being tested.
Don’t know how far out you are from your meet, but start working on commands.
Not sure on that specific fed’s rules, but you should get a squat command once you have unracked, set, and demonstrated control of the weight and then a rack command once you have completed the squat. In my experience the spotters will help you into the rack once you get this command and you don’t really have to do anything but wait on them.
The bench may have a start command, some feds don’t. Have someone in the gym call your presses and racks for your bench work.
The deadlift is a simple a down command once you have locked out. Don’t drop the weight.
Nothing worse than completing a lift successfully and having it redlighted on a technicality.
And as others have said, open light. Safe bet is a weight that you can triple.
Attempting to break the squat record listed on Powerliftingwatch, drug tested, unwrapped at 165 lbs. Record is 550 (165 550 Tony Conyers USA 1997 AAU). If my cycle goes as well, which it is, I will crush that.
So you can’t even wear Eleiko knee sleeves? Like olympic style? I’m fine with no wearing them, but I just want to clarify.
No sleeves
I’ve competed a lot with them, I generally second what osu said with the only exception being that you usually don’t have a full 24 hour weigh-in but often you can weigh-in in the afternoon the day before lifting (they usually let weigh-ins start at 4 pm on Friday for a Sat meet). Wrist wraps are okay, belt is okay, but no sleeves or knee wraps or anything. Expect the squat to break parallel. Don’t take any strong pre-workout drinks or you might fail a drug test just FYI. What meet were you going to do?
That is a monster record to break, good luck with it. If you want to post a video of your squat now (doesn’t have to be a max) we’ll be happy to give you feedback on it.
I’m not aware of the exact rules in this federation, but be careful of things such as movement of the hands, bar and feet during a lift. In the federation I competed in they were all grounds for a red light.
If you’re going to be hitting ammonia before the lifts, which, in my opinion, is a good idea, make sure you’re used to it enough that it won’t put you on your ass when you need to be lifting.
Most importantly, have a good time. It’s your first meet after all.
