Alright cool, I thought that was the case. Just as happy to hear things that I shouldn’t buy lol
I’ve used rubber patio pavers for years to pad deadlifts. These days, I use a horse stall mat.
Interesting, I’m in a pretty urban environment, so I’m not even sure where i would buy horse mats locally. You have a link to something like you have?
I assume I can just run down to Lowe’s for patio pavers
Yeah, I got mine at a Mendards, but Home Depot carries them.
This is a horse stall mat
Thanks, do you have a couple of them or is one wide enough?
Edit: for deadlifts
I have 2 put together for deadlifts.
Alright, I’m pretty close to set on what I want.
Rack: Titan T-3, weight plate holders (for stability), strap safety
Bar: Rogue Ohio Power
Axle: Titan 84"
Dumbbell handles: None
Bench: HELP! The Titan one I was looking at isn’t in stock til 2021.
This bench is a) more expensive and b) looks less wide at the top. Rogue ones are extra expensive. https://www.titan.fitness/strength/benches/adjustable/single-post-adjustable-fid-bench/400969.html
I’d just see what pops up on facebook market. Adjustable benches don’t seem to be in as high of demands as the basics. If nothing else, just get something cheap to tide you over. I’ve never actually bought a bench from a distributor before: they’re always being garage sale’d.
I don’t know how much more input I could add. I use a women’s barbell, so I don’t think I run into as many issues there. If you want a rack and have the financial and spatial capacity for one, then by all means go for it.
Personally, I am terribly frugal yet also adopt the “buy nice or buy twice” approach. If finances aren’t a variable in this equation, it looks like you are set. But if they are, I would ask whether you need dumbbell handles right now. And maybe by foregoing the handles you could get a slightly nicer barbell.
I’ve used Titan’s products at my previous gym, and from my experience they’re fine. But don’t be opposed to meticulously reading/watching customer reviews and checking out other smaller companies. You want to be confident in your purchase, unless you have a strong feeling you will be selling everything later when/if COVID passes.
Edit: I got my bench from REP. It’s excellent. They’re known to make very high quality benches. i would see if they have any in stock.
I looked at a few of the places you mentioned in my log and couldn’t find much available. Unfortunately they don’t have adjustable benches available at REP, I might just go the route pwn is mentioning or I might buy a decent flat bench from REP or Titan and find a Craigslist incline one when I feel the need. The great news about REP is that they have 45lb plates for sale cheaper than anywhere I’ve seen and they’re actually in stock.
Edit: hadn’t accounted for shipping, sad.
You can find even more companies on the r/homegym subreddit. I think they have an entire thread dedicated to detailing which companies have which items in stock since the pandemic’s surge.
Yeah, sometimes I wish I had an adjustable bench. But I don’t personally think I need one to get better. In many ways having fewer pieces of equipment forces you to be more creative and/or figure out what really matters for you.
If you are getting second hand weights make sure to get some direct rust metal spray paint and spray them in thin coats and you will get very nice looking plates after 4 coatings. Also you can get an angled football/ swiss bar for pretty cheap that you can use for a variety of supplemental exercises and also lay across the top of your rack and get mutiple chin angles to save money.
Fray fitness has some great deals on stuff including a cable system. I’d look into them too for some of your needs!
The weights I grabbed this morning are actually brand new, not sure why the guy was selling them but I’ll almost certainly be getting used ones in the future. Thanks for the advice.
I think I’m going to go into my gym once I pass my covid test and see what benches they have, they are pretty solid. This seems like a decent option though
Alright, so I’ve officially ordered/purchased:
Rogue Ohio Power bar and cleaning kit
Titan 84" Axle bar
Titan T-3 with straps and weight holders
90lbs more weight from Titan (coming 1/1/2021), 255lbs craigslist weight
By the time that all gets here I need to get some flooring, some bands and a bench but that shouldn’t be too hard. Looking towards getting some more accessories for the rack in the medium term but nothing pressing.
Thanks for the help everyone and pray that I get a Christmas bonus because I just got a bunch of useless ass airline miles. Side note, f*** King county’s 10.1% sales tax.
Pics when it’s up!
I wouldn’t rush to buy more - you’ll get a rhythm of what you like doing that will inform your next purchase. That or you’ll just see a great deal on the Internet
Now that you own one, you’ll know to call it an axle, rather than an axle bar. Much like how you wouldn’t say barbell bar.
Congrats on the purchase dude: it’s going to serve you well!
Excellent choices man. I have a Titan X3 (was same price as T3 at time of order on super sale, plus was in stock), Ohio Power Bar (bare steel and haven’t cleaned it once…still looks good), and have both the Titan flat bench and Titan adjustable bench. Their flat bench is great, but their adjustable bench isn’t level. Neither is the Y-bar dip attachment I have. I also have Titan’s 205lb dumbbell set - the 1" size with screw-on collars and I really like them. Collars are secure and the extreme length of the DB handle isn’t too inconvenient.
For flooring I built the platform from Art of Manliness and it’s held up great. Screwed the rack to the platform so that I didn’t have to drill into the floor and it’s stable.
Noted but because I’m a stubborn bastard I’m calling it an Axle Bar until I hold it in my hands!
