First Bodybuilding Show. April 2012

You and all your carbs…

Awesome work Tim. Great work on gaining the weight clean and not getting too far out of your stage conditioning. Thats a fine line to walk. I doubt you will ever need to do a 16 week contest prep again should you decide to compete again.

Did you cut with just food intake manipulations, or did you increase activity with the sled/cardio at all?

i really enjoy oats 1st thing in the morning with 20 g of natty Pb, Cinnamon, and stevia. Also i eat them post workout with Raw honey, blue berries, cinnamon and Whey which is enjoyable…but then comes the bloat! haha, oh well cant complain i was freaking dying when i dieting for my show.

Good point, I’d rather be bloated then go through the low-carb/empty stomach/hard to fall asleep crap.

Man grind and tim you guys are right about the oats and rice.I do the same with my rice, oats etc.To me it’s like dessert haha. With these 2 who needs other carb source’s.[/quote]

I cut most of the raisins out for now, but yeah, when I had cinnamon and raisins mixed with the rice and milk, it was as good as dessert for me.

Years of Berardi G-Flux turned me into a carb eating monster!

Thanks Lonnie. And that’s an interesting point you make. I dieted 6 weeks and probably would have been stage ready in 11 (I thought I was 5 pounds away at 1 pound per week). However, I also wanted to get bigger. So it would be possible that the next time I cut it would have to be for longer. But I think you are right, probably 14 weeks max, definitely not 16.

Good question, I completely forgot to document that.

It was just food manipulations. I pulled the ol’ tire sled one time in the 6 weeks when I had a sunny day and some free time. But otherwise, just my normal training - no cardio, no thermogenics.

Kind of off topic,

but when it comes to carbs and metabolism i just recently spoke with a friend of mine who competed two weeks ago and he told me the lowest he went in carbs was 350 grams, and his max intake during his off season was 700 grams a day!!!

That’s awesome, gives me a goal to shoot for!

I was up to 684g at one point during my 2011 bulk and still took in 287g on regular days leading up to the contest.

So I am close!

If you have a super high off season carb intake like 500 plus carbs for instance…when you get lower during pre contest do you start feeling crappy like the guys who are on 50 or fewer carbs to get lean?

I do get hungry because relative to what I was used to its low (500g versus 250g for example). But, I never felt crappy the way I’ve read about and heard about from other lifters who had to go darn near zero carbs to drop off those last few pounds.

I did go down to around 50g to deplete for a few days and I can say that I was dragging by the late afternoon. I can’t imagine staying at 50g for more than a few days!

cool stuff,

i know when i got down to 60 grams of carbs id be seriously dragging, going down to zero was hell, but eventually got used to it, going down to zero carbs and 0 fat was life ruining.

hoping going down to no lower than 50 grams a day will do it for me next time around.

I hope so too.

Darn, zero fat?!? I can’t imagine, I thought fat was pretty necessary for proper hormone functioning.

haha yeah man, my hormones werent functioning correctly at all. i dont think its reccomended anyone do that ever. Its just when you are behind and have 3 weeks till the show…fortunately after getting those nutrients back in things normalized fairly quickly!

Glad it was only for a short time period otherwise I speculate it would have taken longer to normalize.

Hey Man thanks for the update! BTW: I was telling my friend about your “tire dragging” exploits the other day, and we had a good laugh about the “I Love You Tire Draggin’ Man!” situation ~~~~

Your deadlift number is especially impressive to me ~ as I hate that lift with a passion ~ and have all but refused to do it. When you Deadlift: Are you dropping the weight when you lock out, or coming back down with it?

Best,
J

No problem, glad you had a laugh about that. I haven’t dragged my tire much this summer, I bet that guy misses me on some level.

Regarding the deadlift, I lower it under control but definitely not emphasized, no need for that. The last few inches (where you are at the most risk) turn into almost a drop but my hands are stil on the bar.

New Deadlift PR

436x5

Quick Posing Update:

Sorry the posing sucks, I rushed it, lol.

Plus I didn’t even pose back, not sure why…it is one of my favorite/best bodyparts.

Thanks for the updates Tim, impressive lifts and you’re looking thick! Looks like you’re having a great offseason, I wouldn’t be surprised if your stage weight is 5 lbs heavier with the same conditioning as the last go around

Thanks for your kind words!

Call me optimistic, but I hope to be even heavier than 5 lbs over previous stage weight.

Glad you checked in.
