Well it will differ from state to state and in each country. First I would suggest going down to your local fire station and talk to the guys there on shift.

I know at my department we offer an Explorers program where you get to do some training and learn about the field before you go to an official academy. When you go to the station ask questions and see if maybe they offer an option to ride out for a few hours with them as well.

I hope that helps.

Malinda

I second the recommendation for checking out the Explorer program at your local department. Around here, not only will it help you get experience, but the fire department will pay for some if not all of your fire academy. (Some departments may require you to volunteer for a pre-determined time after that).

Also check to see if your school district offers an Introduction to Fire Science/Emergency Medicine course at a centrally located building in the district.

Hey Samdiesel:

I wanted some info on FDNY. Live down in Miami Fl. In South Fl the depts are combined Fire/Ems, but my passion from training so far is the fire side of things more than the medical. I’m an NREMT and state and nationally certified FF I & II. I’m currently in Paramedic school down here in Miami. I was wondering if you could guide me in the right direction on getting some info to get hired up there with FDNY. Feel free to pm me if you’d like. I would Greatly appreciate any help you could offer.

Thanks,
Gabriel

Also, for canada, well ontario, they now have the pre-service firefighter program, which i believe is now mandatory in many cities and about to become province wide. That is the program i am currently enrolled in.

I thought there would be more people on this thread??? Here goes…

Arvada Colo
State cert Firefighter 1 & Haz-Mat Ops.
EMT-basic (for 10yrs)

I’ve been volunteering for 5 years and love it! If you have any questions let me know!

Well, I guess if you could not score well enough on the civil service exam to be a cop then being a hose dragger is the next best thing :o)

I appreciate all that you guys do.

Rich
Aurora PD

I am a volunteer in Ellerslie Georgia. I am still in training to get certified. I have two classes, live fire training and the test left to go. I should be done by the first of the year. We just had a fellow Firefighter die in the line of duty. He lost control of the truck and hit a tree. He had a wife and two young kids. My wife had second thoughts about me continuing, but it only made me want to serve even more.

maybe this isnt even in the correct forum.

Hero’s are the people that go out of their way to help people in need, not people that get paid to do their jobs. I’ve helped many people in my life. I saved an elderly woman’s life, but I won’t be recognized as a hero? Maybe because I didn’t have a uniform or cool looking fire gear on?
I get round this by ALWAYS wearing my fire kit, even when I’m off duty. That way if I ever happen accross someone who needs help I can be sure to receive the appropriate amount of praise, (which is what we all do the job for anyway). Before I joined the Fire Service though I simply wore a cape and a mask, and stuck my undies on over my trousers. This had the same effect.

I don’t post much on here except when something gets me going and the above comment kind of pisses me off! Most of the firefighters in this country are not paid, they are VOLUNTEER!!! We don’t receive payment we do this for free, the satisfaction we get is a job well done and a thank you. No medals, no big ceremonies hopefully a thank you and maybe just maybe some goodies (cookies or cake) or a thank you card from a very appreciative family. That to me says volumes more than a paycheck or a medal.

Boo hoo! So your going to be a volunteer fireman the rest of your life? I think firefighters are great. However, a true hero is the one that spontaneously acts in a situation to help someone, not someone that is doing their job. Not someone that craves to be looked upon as heroic. I get sick and tired of hearing about how amazing firefighters are. There’s plenty of other people out there that deserve to be recognized as a hero. Paid or no pay, you went into the job knowing what the job entailed. Besides, most of the younger firefighters that I have seen go into the proffesion hoping that they will be lifted up on a glorious pedestal and stupid brainless women will flock to them because they look so sexy in their little fire costume. Need I talk about all of the ridiculous sex scandals that these dipshits got into? You’re right that was so heroic.
Bitter party of 1???

Yes I knew what the job entailed when I went into it, and yes I plan on being a volunteer fire fighter in some capacity for the rest of my life.

And while I do agree that there are other hero’s out there I think it’s a slap in the face to bash something that a very small amount of people in this country can do. I’m assuming your in NoCal since you brought up the sex scandal and I’ll say that just like any profession (like in health care) there are idiots that take advantage of other people or situations.

As for the people looking to be put on a pedastal and have “brainless” women flock to them we usually wash them out in academy once they discover that there is actually work involved in this line of work.

My apologies for the thread hijack hopefully this can go back to something constructive.

lanchefan1 Let it go! Dont bring your self down to the same level as this moron.

We know why we do our jobs and what our jobs entail. I for one do my job because I love it, I do not expect anyone to think of me as a hero or anything else.

I do expect the same respect you would give to any other human being – I believe in the case of tuffloud that would be about zero.

And not all firefighters are men – in case you have not noticed there are women in this field. I do not expect brainless women to fall at my feet, nor do I want them to.

Malinda - firefighter/paramedic and a women

Was an EMT about 8 years ago, great job.

i just wanted some information on helping to get my career started, i could care less about sex scandals which by the way happen in many professions.

Sounds like someone lost their girl to a fireman.

tuffloud

For one…I don’t give a rats ass if they get paid to do it! They CHOOSE to put their life on the line DAILY to help others in my book that makes them heroes…along with RCMP…Soldiers…Peacekeepers… and people like Mother Theresa and yes those people that show a greater caring for other people by stepping up when needed. Other heroes are people who don’t turn their eyes when a woman, child or man are getting beaten on the streets.

That being said…I was posting on a thread geared to firemen and thanking them for what they do.

If you want accolades for what you did put up a thread about it.

As for those that abuse their power, they are everywhere…you don’t judge the whole by the actions of a few!

Okay rant over
