Firebug's Road to Recovery & Nationals

This weeks training…

18 Mar 09 Work day…
Bleachers – walking(tried to run, that was not happening)
32:25:38

Elliptical later in the day 30 minutes

stretching 35 minutes

19 Mar 09 Squats

Bar x 5, 4
115 x 8
135 x 6
155 x 5
175 x 3
195 x 1 – six sets
205 x 1 – three sets
215 x 1 – three sets

Leg press 200lbs x 3 sets of 10

Abs weighted, cable 30, 42.5, 57.5 X 10 at each weight

Weight felt really good, form was almost perfect. Sitting back, depth was really good. Trained in my Vibrams…I really like the feeling of these on my feet while training. I will keep with them until I am closer to a meet, I think they will do me well in the end.

Today my legs are a little sore, hip flexors are fried and glutes as well.

20 Mar 09
Military Press

Bar x 8
65 x 5
75 x 3
85 x 6

DB bench 3 x 10 at 40, 45, then 50

Lat pull downs 4 x 10 at 75, 85, 95, 100

This has been a tough week. No real training done, just cardio last Saturday – 30 minutes on the elliptical and some stretching…hopefully this week will go better.

Only three weeks left until the Race for the cure walk…

You need to get the IPF/USAPL to approve those things. So silly, to disallow. I only wear my Chucks because I don’t really know what else to wear that is approved.

What shoes do you wear for comps?

Currently I squat and bench in some Olympic lifting shoes adistars, deadlift in wrestling shoes. But I think I might have to change to my chucks…my training was so much better in the vibrams.

Amazing job-you really are inspiring

Hey, with chemo they’ll be some rough weeks, but you should be good to go to walk for “The Cure”.

Where did you find the difference in your squat with the Vibrams? I currently squat and bench and generally train in custom olympic shoes and love the support they give but I’m hearing more people say they prefer chucks or something similar.

I found my form to be much improved completely. My depth was better, my knees stayed out better and my glutes seemed to fire better. All in all a vast improvement.

I watched my brother battle cancer as a teen… and win. Reading about your continued efforts in the gym and astoundingly making improvements during this time is an awesome inspiration. People like you and my brother show us all what the human spirit is capable of.

With gratitude!

Mark,

thank you so much for the kind words. I do keep trying, some weeks go better than others. I am happy to hear of your brothers success! Gives me more hope that all will be better in the end!

Thanks again,
Malinda

Last couple of weeks have been very tough. Chemo is getting rougher on the body and I caught a sinus/upper respiratory infection of some kind just before my last chemo treatment, bringing me even further down :(. So, with all of that I have been out of the gym since the 20th of March, until Tonight!
Did not get much done, but I did get in and do SOMETHING! Does the body and mind good…

I also did get bleachers in on the 30th. My endurance is way down, I get tired just walking across a room. In 30 minutes or less I normally get in 60 trips up and down the bleachers…well this time I only got in 50 and my rest time has increased(I don’t time my breaks, but think I might have to start).

Tonight was Bench Training

Bar x 8
115 x 6
140 x 5
150 x 5
160 x 5 This set was really difficult to get all 5, but I did. I was hoping to hit 6-8 but realistically am happy with the 5 I got.

Nothing more after this I was to tired to even leave. Had to sit down and rest for a while before getting in the car to drive home. Another round of Chemo tomorrow, so it will be a few days before I feel up to training again…

Just keep up the good attitude and remember your ultimate goal - to out bench me!

No…seriously…I failed on a 170 single attempt today. You are stunning.

You are awesome!

Great job.

You are such an inspiration. I bet you get tired of hearing that, but you truly are. I remember what a toll chemo took on my late husband. He could barely get to and from bed some days, much less be out in the gym! I know that those who admire your gumption say the mantra, “Hey, if FIREBUG can do it, so can I…” Well, at least I do.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I keep trying to hit the gym, but my trips are becoming less and less frequent. Hopefully the next phase of chemo will be easier and I will get back to some sort of normalcy in my life.

A woman that had just started training with the nearby club started chemo at the end of Jan. It beat her up pretty badly, but she’s now back in the gym, slowly but surely. She says the meds still make her feel gross, but she’s determined to get her butt back

Stay strong Malinda! Your numbers will be back up in no time!

So, I only have another month! That would be great. When did she finish chemo? I really can’t wait to get my butt back! I miss it. as well as my legs, my abs and my back…they all seem to be missing in action.
