The first rule of gunfighting is have a gun.
.38 special is good to go. The new Federal Punch ammo in .22 LR actually meets the FBI protocols for penetration in ballistic gel. They are inexpensive, you can practice with the same ammo you carry, and they don’t recoil very much.
Smith & Wesson offers several 8 shot J frame versions, and I believe the Ruger LCR holds 8 also. It wouldn’t be my first, or second choice for self defense, but for someone who otherwise isn’t going to carry a gun it is a very valid choice.
Mine is also really fun to shoot.
Great info. BTW, I’ve only personally known one person who used a gun lethally in a justifiable self-defense situation. It was a .22 revolver with CCI Stingers… loaded by me, but that’s another story.
As a federal firearms instructor, I see this all the time. A large number of agents will not carry their issued weapon off duty, even if the rules require you too. When talking with them and pointing out the stupidity of their actions, I will hear a litany of excuses. Too heavy, too hot, too uncomfortable, etc. " I usually just stick a small pistol in my pocket" . " When was the last time you trained with it? " Blank stare.
The best gun for self defense? The one you have on you at the time of attack.
Wouldn’t a person who bothered to carry a gun at all have chosen a gun that they feel would adequately protect them?
The short answer is : no. You would be surprised how many people will chose a handgun based on comfort instead of adequate defense. It so much easier sticking a small pistol in your pocket than dressing properly to carry a solid defensive pistol.
This video helps clarify some firearm fundamentals. It’s satire, but it contains all the talking-points we hear from those who want from those who want gun control.
Shoot often.
Shooting is a diminishing skill. I would recommend shooting at least once a month.
There is a reason high level operators, shooting competitors, and special forces shoot thousands of rounds a month.
This makes so much sense. I even wonder if the newer you are to it, the more frequency you need… kinda like if you’re a beginner in the gym learning the basic lifts. Dry firing has been helpful too, but I heard someone say that it’s not good for your guns. Is there any truth to that?
Modern firearms should be fine, but Snap Caps are inexpensive insurance. I like the Azoom brand.
Good to know! I’m stocked up on snap caps too. ![]()
I used to use snapcaps, but modern guns won’t have an issue.
I have dry fired modern guns thousands of times with no issue.
Never dryfire a rimfire weapon though - only centerfire. When a rimfire pistol or rifle is dry fired, the striker hits the outside mouth of the barrel chamber instead of the soft brass rim of the cartridge that is normally there. This can not only damage or destroy your firing pin, but over time will peen the barrel face. If this is repeated numerous times you can damage this area so badly ammunition will no longer load into the chamber.
This is really good info; thank you!
I would say yes. It really boils down to a lot of muscle memory like anything that requires coordination.
More time behind the trigger will always equate to better outcomes imo.
One of my best buds is a former seal sharp shooter. The dude is just gifted when it comes to shooting without a doubt, but minus the gift of feeling the target and shooting - these elite guys have hundreds of thousands if not millions of rounds down range with various weapons and it shows.
Love to hear that. Shooting is fun!
Yes mam, it is.
I am so glad females have gotten heavily into shooting these days. It has really grown the sport and made it more fun. My wife is an avid shooter too.
That’s awesome! There are so many viral videos of women getting beaten up (sometimes killed) by predators, so it’s great to see other women learning to defend themselves.
Also love stories like this…
Barely a blip on the MSM… Telling
I have personal experience with this shooting organization. Good group of women and men instructors. If interested, check them out.
Oh that looks really cool!! Thank you!!
