THEN DUMPED!! Well thanks a lot for all the advice and it seems to have done the trick but i guess I only won half the battle. Here is the vids of me touching yesterday and then dumping it. I think Im flaring my elbows in the hole which is causing the shirt to reject me.
What do y’all think? What advice do you have? Meets in two weeks and I am thinking of just using the phenom but I would lke to make this shirt work.
if you could get a video angled between the front view and a side view, it would help a ton. It looks like you’re trying to raw bench in a shirt. Here are the movements in the shirt, you unrack the weight, and settle, basically squeeze your scap tighter and sink into the bench. Then the first one or two inches is like a raw bench movement, This locks the collar and makes the chest plate tighter.
Then tuck your elbows moderately and pull the bar into the support, dont go around it. The weight should be getting harder and harder to get to your chest, we call it staying in the bubble, it will feel like your rowing the weight into a beach ball.
If the weight gets easier, you’ve gone out of the support (generally toward your feet) and usually results in getting stapled or reversing and dumping the weight like you did. I think a lot of your problems go back to your raw benching in a shirt, you need to tuck those elbows a ton more.
To reverse the weight, you should throw it back over your face to lockout, thats the point of the katana having torqued sleeves. Dont throw the weight straight up…just making it hard on yourself. Hope this helps.
In reality, I’m not expert. But it does look like you’re flared at the bottom and there’s no obvious tuck. It looks like youre bringing the elbows straight down and in an attempt to touch low you just chop it onto your stomach. I think the key is tucking harder and using your elbows to pull and lead the bar down to where you want it to go.
Pushing the bar towards your stomach to force a touch it what’s killing you.
Your wrists are getting ahead of your elbows and from there it’s like a reverse curl and then press. Pretty much impossible to hit the right groove doing that.

Yeah, that’s what I’m seeing too. Looks like you’re rolling forwards out of the groove to get a touch. Once you do that, it’s pretty much over.

exactly. OP you need to tuck your elbows harder. your hand needs to stay directly above your elbow. you know this. you start to tuck at the top and then stop tucking, keep tucking until you touch. think about bringing the bar down with your elbow not your hand. if you do that the hand will stay over your elbow instead of letting your shoulder rotate into a pullover type position.
No, you’re not flaring. Watch carefully. Your elbows are actually in pretty decent position as you descend. Then, you hit the path of most resistance and instead of being stubborn, pushing your chest up to meet the bar and getting it done, you stop the downward travel of your upper arms and basically rotate your forearms towards you belly pushing the bar outside of any path of resistance to touch.
You are then handcuffed. You have no leverage at this point to press not to mention you are below the bubble of the shirt.
I used to see this with guys inexperienced with open back DD’s but never in a Katana.
Assuming you are setting the seams right and getting it seated it basically boils down to how you are setting up and taking the handoff and your upper back and lat strength combined with some good old fashioned, “Listen fucking bar, you are going where I fucking tell you. Period.”
After being in the same situation you are not too long ago, I’d go back to your phenom. It’s 2 weeks out, and you haven’t touched a weight, that’s a bad spot you’re in man. Trust me.

OP, if this is the case, and you know you can work in your phenom, I’d get back in that for the meet.
For the future, though…
From the angle you’ve posted, it looks like you’re pressing straight up… Once you touch, you need to press, flare your elbows, and throw the weight towards your face. All at the same time. hah
Also, post more videos at a side angle so we can see where you touch, the angle of your arm, your line of pressing, etc…

Yea for this meet I debated about opening raw and then trying to hit a bench in the super katana but I think I would rather go for higher numbers on the bench over all. I think i get 50-100 out of the phenom so I might as well just for the better bench. Overall it will make for a less stressful day and its not a major meet so I’m not worried about placing more about having a great time and setting a few pr’s. I was expecting to do the meet and I’m happy to be able to as work has been pretty hectic. not giving up on the super just not for this meet.

Out of curiosity, why are you using the super katana? I’ve heard that the single ply is easier to touch (obviously) and gives more pop. But the super katana is more about stopping power.

Opening RAW adds a lot of stress to the meet (mentally it is an admission you suck in the shirt and it’s not relaxing at all having to put it on after your opener depending on the pace of the meet) and is terribly amateurish.
Keep in mind, PL is all about the total. You can’t get one if yous shit the bed on bench.
This is kind of contrary to what I said but if you want to, why don’t yo utake your first 2 attempts in the Phenom (to get the most towards your total) and then take your 3rd in the Katana?

I chose the super katana because I heard from a lot of people that its the best single ply shirt on the market and its also ipf legal. I talked to ken anderson and he sold me on the super katana that I have. I think with more time I will get a good bench out of it and all this struggle is making me a better shirt bencher.
But for this meet, which is just a local meet I am going to use my single phenom as it’s a proven shirt and I have no problems with it. Just kind of sucks hoping to get a 550 bench to a 450-500 bench if Im lucky. Using it on my last attempt isnt something I thought about but I have to say with as tight as my phenom is its kind of bitch to get on and off so I don’t think i will have time.

Yeah, I hadn’t thought about getting the Phenom off…could be a problem.
You have a great shirt in the SK, you just have to realize it is very sensitive to how it is set up and takes a little time to get it figured out.
I have had guys come over that swore they couldn’t touch more than their current PR and in 15 minutes of working with them I had them touching 315. It all comes down to how it is set up and getting your upper back and lats set so the chest doesn’t compress in that last inch or so.

I’ve never heard of anyone talking about “stopping power” in regards to a bench shirt. The Katanas and Super Katanas are probably more difficult to touch in than the the open back Inzers and definitely provide a lot more than “stopping power”. My experience with Katanas is that they give a good amount of support nearly all the way to lockout, and the rebound is powerful enough to get you to 3-4 board range with little trouble.
