Hey fellas,
Can someone with experience give any ideas on the best way to filter 100ml or more of fina would be? Looking for possible alternatives to syringe filters. Unless of course there isnt any better alternatives. Also more importantly looking for a way which results in the least amount of gear lost in the filtering process.
I’ve read about buying a pump but that all seems too advanced for right now. Unless it is actually simple.
Thanks a bunch.
The very best practice that I have found is to allow the mixture to settle for a week to 10 days. You can go longer…but I haven’t found it all that much better. Any less and you just have a messy hassle and some lost gear.
After the settling process -use a standard coffee filter to pre-filter the material.
Use the coffee filter to create a cone-shaped funnel.
Place your filter/funnel into the top of an appropriately sized beaker (or other such container with an ample opening).
Pour the contents into your filter/funnel and allow to drain. This may be a bit at a time, or all at once dependant upon multiple factors.
After drainage has ceased, you can ‘wring-out’ your filter/funnel…extracting every last drop of solution (while keeping the gunkies out, of course).
Then you can attach your syringe filter to a large, multi/ML syringe.
Remove the plunger and pour the pre-filtered contents into the syringe. Replace the plunger and begin filtering into a vented, appropriately sized sterile vial.
This is by far the easiest process I have followed.
I always keep extra syringe filters on hand -but have never had to use them (so far).
…so easy, a cavem…er I mean, a therapist could do it!
