Fighting Someone Taller

In a real fight, I’d just walk away. I don’t see the need to get my ass kicked or thrown in jail.

im just curious how would you guys go about fighting or defending yourself against someone taller. Im not looking to go beat someone up haha but i decided to box my dad yesterday for fun and i got killed, he has such a longer reach on me and thats mainly why.

I also seem to get into problems with people who are taller than me so im was always curious is the best way to take them down to the floor and fight that way or how would you guys do it.
Use your leverage. Hug his hips and lift him up, then slam him down. Be careful if you do this on concrete since you can hurt yourself.

You want to close the distance. Kick to knees or sweeps work very well. You can use your weight as well. If you get close and manage to grab his neck and pull it down and then try to knee him in the face, it could work.
Use your elbows too.
Easier said than done though.

Yup,
Get in close so he cant use his reach. If its a real fight not just slap boxin with the pops I would take him down to the ground (In a controlled enviroment) to elliminate the striking range all together.
Then again I understand and use the ground game alot and standup…If you dont know how to fight hit him with something long and run the other way.
C’mon guys! We taller gents KNOW you’re going to try to get inside on us. When you get there, I’ll simply put these big fucking mitts on your face and drive my fingers through your eye sockets. This is also ideal if I miss and have to sprawl.

Now, being 6’7", I also know that someone who tries me is either cracked out or is very sure he can take me. That being the case, cracked out or badass MFer, I’m going to try and kill him.

Want to fight big guys? Learn to knife fight. I’d run like a MFer if someone pulled a blade.

Wisest response thus far, much harder to fight when in a 6x9 cell, nowhere you can go other than toe to toe.

If an attacker got that close to me, I’d blind him. I’ll also look for a nice artery to chew through.

Real fighting is brutal and ugly. I haven’t been in one for at least 20 years and don’t want to.

Unless it’s worth dying for, don’t fight.

Go for our knees, most of us forget about that.

ya well u dont always have that option

I’d be more interested In hearing people opinions on fighting someone significantly(more then 30 pounds) heavier then you.

o ya thats a good topic also lol

A few things to try would be:

 1. Keep them from lining you up. In other words, do NOT stand in their line of fire. Keep using headmovement and footwork to keep them from ever getting a beat on you (use angles).

 2. Do not let them get the distance they want (so either outside their range or inside where their reach isn’t an advantage).

 3. Go for the body first, then the head. Do not go for the head first as taller opponent’s tend to be good at snapping back and making you miss, then returning fire with their superior reach. Their body is much harder to get out of the way of your punch, as they also tend to be weak/slow when it comes to footwork.

A good punching combination to use on taller opponents is a double jab (first to the chest, second to the face) then straight right (to either the chin or heart). From there you have a lot of options.

Other than that, it really depends on the context and circumstances.

You have a couple options:

 1. Out work them. Set a very fast pace and try to burn them out. Their superior mass also means that they must expend more energy to move that mass around. Once they are fatigued, their superior size won’t be as much of an advantage anymore (if at all). You have to be in superior shape than them for this to work though.

 2. Out skill them. Again, this is something that you are going to have to work extremely hard to pull off. You must beat them with superior strategy, execution of techniques, and not trying to match strength with strength. Don’t take them head on, instead try to use their energy to set them up. Larger opponents will often be more than happy to try to overpower you, so give them some energy/resistance to bait them into doing so, then use their attempt to overpower you to lead them into a different technique.

Besides that it somewhat depends on the individual. If you are faster, use that to your advantage. If you are taller, use that. etc…etc… It’s about neutralizing your opponent’s advantages while maximizing the effectiveness of your own.

Easier said than done, friend.
When people fight, they don’t stay in one place.

More advice: Don’t move back and forth, move sideways/circle him.

Beat you to it

I’ll remember to get aids before I fight you!

I fought super heavy weight for 2 yrs before making the cut down to 220lbs…It sux, anything above 220lbs in many organizations is an “Open division” Meaning that I could fight someone 50-200lbs heavier then me…I have video of me fighting a guy 3" taller then me and 70lbs heavier and I have another video of me fighting a guy 80lbs heavier and about my height…

It sux bad if you not used to it…shit even if your used to it it sucks bad, I won both of those fights with wrestling/judo/and jujitsu, I closed the distance IMMEDIATLY, Got the take down and with the 1st guy I took his back in the second round and got the tap and with the other guy I beat him in a little less then 2 min in the 1st round by pulling guard and spinning under his leg for a heal hook…Ill post some pics of me fighting bigger guys.

The above pic is of me choking the 6’4" 290lb monster in the 2nd round, at the time I was 240.
This next pic will give you some insite to how BIG he really was, you can see obviously that Im the “smaller” one at 6’1" and 240lbs

In this one is a guy that was a football player for University of Kentucky, dude was THICK and strong as hell…He was trying to bully me around by can opening me with my neck…I have been doing this for a very long time so it doesnt bother me, right after this pic was taken I spun under his left leg swept him and took the heel hook for the win.

And this one is just because it makes me feel special.

Speaking of the videos I have of me fighting bigger opponents, does anyone know what program I could use to upload them to here?
